It's Official!
Sacramento Metropolitan Arts Commission turns 40

It's officially our 40th anniversary this month! Congratulations to staff, Commissioners, elected officials, artists, and arts patrons past and present for 40 years of hard work and dedication to the arts. Cheers to many more!

To celebrate this landmark moment in our history, we are pleased to introduce the first video from a new video series, "A Tea Time Reflection." Each video highlights a different sector of the Arts Commission and includes some new faces as well as faces you will recognize from the past 40 years. Join us as we listen in on conversations with influential artists in the community each month from now until the end of the year. Laugh, relive memories, and reflect on the wonderful work that's been done on behalf of the arts so far.

Our first video, A Tea Time Reflection on Grants, features Estella Sanchez (Sol Collective), Katie McCleary (916 Ink), and Ruth Rosenberg (Grants Consultant) in a conversation about our grants programs. (Thanks so much to Cole Przbyla and the filming/production team at Cole Video.)

Gateway Arch Installed at North Natomas Regional Park

A massive archway formed by layers of welded aluminum baseball bats supported by two large-scale concrete pillars now greets visitors to North Natomas Regional Park. The 23-foot-high work “Pastime!”, by northern California artists Mark Grieve and Ilana Spector, pays homage to the all-American sport and welcomes all park-goers.

“The gateway sets the tone for good, competitive fun and gives the community a place to connect,” said the artist. “Baseball is an organized game in which two teams engage -- a form of “structured chaos.” Every swing of the bat affects the game. The sculpture represents the future of millions of innings -- millions of possible outcomes -- millions of possibilities.”

The project was funded by the City’s Percent for Art ordinance. North Natomas Regional Park is located at 2501 New Market Drive (map).
