August Staff Highlight - Frances Negranza

When over 250 kids enjoyed our first ever "education day" at this year's Santa Clara County Fair it was thanks to the vision and hard work of Education & Outreach Coordinator Frances Negranza.   Her tremendous effort to create a curriculum for kids to learn about local agriculture and enjoy STEAM activities resulted in a wonderful experience for kids from many different day camps in the area, including several YMCAs and even a few City of San Jose Community Centers.

The Fairgrounds and the job of Education & Outreach Coordinator is a perfect fit for Frances, who showed sheep in FFA all through high school right here at the Santa Clara County Fairgrounds before going off to get a degree in agriculture education and communication from Fresno State. After graduating college she started here as an intern before joining the staff full-time a couple of years ago.

When she's not hard at work at the Fairgrounds you'll most often find Frances in the great outdoors, enjoying backpacking, camping, hiking and biking.

August Volunteer Highlight  - Ashley Pipkin

Every year our volunteers seek to create new additions to the county fair - this month we would like to highlight Ashely Pipkin for her efforts in the creation of Santa Clara County's first Junior Fair Board!  This is a leadership opportunity for both 4-H and FFA members to learn and assist with the daily processes of running the livestock show and exhibits hall during the fair. After an application and interview process, we had 10 individuals between the ages of 13-17 fill the positions. Ashely organized the interviews, outlined responsibilities and trained the newly appointed board for the 2017 fair.

Previously an FFA showman, Ashley has continued to devote herself to the fair year after year. You can find her behind the show ring handling awards, in the livestock office organizing show schedules or at the auction registering and processing buyers.

Thank you, Ashley, for all your hard work and dedication to the Santa Clara County Fair!

Q:  What's happening with the proposed redevelopment of the Fairgrounds?

A:  The Board of Supervisors Finance & Government Operations Committee discussed the Fairgrounds at their August 10,2017 meeting.   Visit this link on County's website to see a video of the discussion (click on item 7 in the agenda below the video to play that portion of the meeting).  The report on the Fairgrounds was supposed to be discussed at the August 15th Board of Supervisors meeting, but it was deferred to the September 12th meeting.
