CLARE WITHERS
Hodder Gibson in Glasgow have appointed Clare Withers as their new Editorial Assistant/Administrator.

LINA LANGLEE
Edinburgh-based Lina Langlee joined the Kate Nash Literary Agency in August as a junior literary agent following her roles in publicity at Black & White Publishing and rights at Canongate Books.

ALASTAIR CHIVERS
A recent graduate from Edinburgh Napier's MSc in Publishing course, Alastair has joined Black & White Publishing as their Digital Marketing Executive.

CANONGATE DESIGNERS
Canongate Books have appointed two new designers who will report to Art Director Rafi Romaya: Gill Heeley as senior designer, and Valeri Rangelov, as junior designer. Gill joins from Penguin Random House and Valeri is a recent graphic design graduate of Lahti University in Finland. They take over from Pete Adlington, who is now Senior Designer at Faber & Faber, and Christopher Gale who is off to make games and study at Abertay University.

CANONGATE SALES TEAM
Charlotte Brady has been promoted to international sales executive and Jo Lord has been promoted to head of online and audio. Foyles fiction buyer, Drew Hunt, is joining Canongate Books in September as Key Account Manager based in London. He will report to Sales Director Neal Price. Former Key Account Manager at Canongate Books, Jane Pike, has joined Inpress as its first Key Accounts & National Retailers Manager.

COLLETTE WILSON
In August the BookSource Board of Directors formally appointed Collette Wilson, its Financial Controller, as Finance Director for the Company.

ALICE PIOTROWSKA
The successful applicant for the fully-funded publishing PhD studentship - 'Publishing in Scotland 1968-2018: From Cultural Heritage to Digital Engagement' is Alice Piotrowska . She will start the PhD at the University of Stirling in October 2018 and it will include placements at both Publishing Scotland and HarperCollins.

404 INK
Dhara Snowden, Peggy Hughes and Stuart Cosgrove have joined the 404 Ink Board .

MATTHEW PERREN
After almost 12 years at BookSpeed in a variety of roles including Operations and Finance Director, Matthew Perren has left BookSpeed to work as a NAV consultant advising businesses on ERP systems.

BIRLINN
Ann Landmann joins Birlinn as a Sales Representative. Ann joins from Blackwell's South Bridge where she was Events Manager for 9 years and Schools Buyer for almost 3 years. Lucy Mertekis is also a new start at Birlinn and has been appointed as their Events Coordinator and Campaigns Assistant.

MAIRI KIDD
Well-known to many in the publishing world, Mairi Kidd is Interim Head of Literature, Languages and Publishing at Creative Scotland. She has taken over Jenny Niven's role while she is on maternity leave.
Waterstones buys Foyles
After 115 years in Foyle family ownership, the London and other Foyles shops are being sold to Waterstones. In a press statement of 7 Septembe r Christopher Foyle said that the shareholders see the sale as securing the brand’s future and protecting its personality.

The sale has garnered a lot of media interest: see eg The Bookseller ; The Guardian and the BBC (all 7 September).
Black Thorn - new crime imprint from Canongate Books
The new crime imprint from Canongate Books launches in May 2019 specialising in the very best in compulsive crime fiction. It will feature books and authors from Severn House which Canongate acquired in 2017. See the catalogue (pictured right) on the Black Thorn website .

Canongate's Chief Executive Jamie Byng has said that when Canongate was assessing Severn House as a possible acquisition, they saw the opportunity to launch a commercial fiction paperback list drawing from Severn House's roster of books and authors. Byng described the new imprint as a distinctive new strand to Canongate’s publishing output. See Publishers Weekly 8 August 2018 .
Prizes, awards and listings
KLAUS FLUGGE PRIZE 2018
Kate Milner has won the prestigious Klaus Flugge Prize for the most exciting and promising newcomer to children’s picture book illustration. She won for her book My Name is Not Refugee (Barrington Stoke), which follows a young boy as he and his mother set out from their home to find somewhere safe to live.

BOOKBUG PICTURE BOOK PRIZE SHORTLIST 2019
One Button Benny by Alan Windram, illustrated by Chloe Holwill-Hunter (Little Door Books); Eric Makes a Splash by Emily MacKenzie (Bloomsbury); and I am Bat by Morag Hood (Two Hoots Books), have been shortlisted for the 2019 Bookbug Picture Book Prize . Picture below by Colin Hattersley.

MCILVANNEY PRIZE SHORTLIST 2018
Congratulations to Lin Anderson, Chris Brookmyre, Charles Cumming and Liam McIlvanney for making the McIlvanney Prize 2018 shortlist for best Scottish Crime Book of the Year. The winner will be announced on 21 September at the start of Bloody Scotland.

THE DONALD MEEK AWARD SHORTLIST 2018
Six new Gaelic books have been shortlisted . The Gaelic Book of the Year will be presented with the Donald Meek Award, and additional literary prizes funded by Bòrd na Gàidhlig will also be awarded. The prize-winners will be announced at a special reception in the National Piping Centre in Glasgow on Thursday 4 October 2018.

GREAT BRITISH ENTREPRENEUR AWARDS SHORTLIST 2018
Heather McDaid and Laura Jones of 404 Ink have been shortlisted in the Creative Industries Entrepreneur of the Year category of the Royal Bank of Scotland Great British Entrepreneur Awards (GBEA) along with other finalists from Scotland and Northern Ireland. The  Edinburgh Gala Final  is on 8 November 2018.

THE MAN BOOKER LONGLIST 2018
The nine books longlisted include The Long Take by Scottish poet and publisher Robin Robertson. As Associate Publisher at Jonathan Cape, Robertson acquired the UK rights to Michael Ondaatje's Warlight which also features on the longlist. The shortlist will be announced on 20 September 2018.

NOT THE BOOKER PRIZE 2018
Sweet Fruit, Sour Land by Rebecca Ley, published by Sandstone Press, is one of six books shortlisted for The Guardian's Not the Booker Prize 2018.

HOSPITAL CLUB - h100 AWARDS
Charco Press founders Samuel McDowell and Carolina Orloff were nominated for The Hospital Club h100 award celebrating the UK's most innovative and creative talent. Syima Aslam, Director of the Bradford Literature Festival, was announced as the winner of the Publishing and Writing category on 10 September.

KELPIES PRIZE 2018
The winner of the annual Kelpies Prize for new Scottish writing is The Lost Wizard of Nine Witches Wood  by Hannah Foley. The winning book will be published by prize organiser Floris Books. For more details, see the Floris Books website . The 2019 prize will be launched soon.

THE WAINWRIGHT GOLDEN BEER PRIZE 2018
The Seabird's Cry by Adam Nicholson (Collins) is the 2018 winner of this prize celebrating the best books about nature, the outdoors and UK travel. See the Wainwright Golden Beer Prize website .

EDWIN MORGAN POETRY AWARD 2018
Roseanne Watt is the winner of the 2018 Edwin Morgan Poetry Award . The poets were shortlisted on the basis of an unpublished collection of poems.
Awards open for entries and other prize news
LAGG POETRY COMPETITION
Isle of Arran Distillers have teamed up with Scottish Field to find the official poem for their new Lagg Distillery. The winning entry will take pride of place onsite at the new distillery that is due to open in the spring of 2019. The closing date for entries is 14 December and the winner and two runners up will be announced on Burns Night, Friday 25 January 2019.

THE DYLAN THOMAS INTERNATIONAL PRIZE 2019
The £30,000 prize is awarded to the best published or produced literary work in the English language, written by an author aged 39 or under. The 2019 Prize deadline for submissions is 7 November 2018 . See the prize's website for details and how to enter.

COMEDY WOMEN IN PRINT PRIZE 2019
Until this prize was launched in August, the Bollinger Everyman Wodehouse Prize (BEWP) was the only existing prize for comic fiction. In the 18 years it has been running only 3 women have won. In 2018 they decided to withhold the prize because none of the 62 entries were funny enough. The organisers of this new prize recognised that the BEWP organisers were clearly missing something.The Comedy Women in Print prize will officially recognise witty female authors and nurture new, unpublished talent. FUTUREBOOK AWARDS 2018
The 2018 FutureBook Awards are now open to entries - and this year they've been whittled down to five lean and inspiring categories. They are: person, book, campaign, podcast and booktech start up. submissions close on 3 October 2018 . For details and to enter, see the The Bookseller website .

NEW ACADEMY PRIZE 2018
This prize is a response to the cancellation of this year's Nobel Prize for Literature (see The Guardian article by Alison Flood ). The New Academy was founded by more than 100 writers and other cultural figures in Sweden to warrant that an international literary prize will be awarded in 2018, but also as a reminder that literature should be associated with democracy, openness, empathy and respect. The winner will be announced on 12 October and presented at a formal event with a grand celebration 9 December 2018. The New Academy will be dissolved in December. See the New Academy's website .

Our latest BooksfromScotland issue is entitled Return and gathers together a selection of titles that celebrate the wonder of the seasons.

Dundee V&A
Scotland's first design museum - the new V&A Dundee - has been much acclaimed by local and international media and others lucky enough to get a preview before the official opening on 15 September. The BBC's Will Gompertz tweeted 'Nothing is perfect but V&A Dundee is pretty close'. Local residents are also very positive (see The Courier's video of 13 September asking local people for their thoughts). Image © Hutton+Crow.

Seen as the start of a process to boost Dundee's appeal and economy, it will be joined by a range of other projects including a comic museum at West Ward Works (DC Thomson's former printworks). See Brian Ferguson in The Scotsman 14 September 2018.

NAIRN BOOK & ARTS FESTIVAL: 11 TO 16 SEPTEMBER
The broad theme of health and creativity is reflected throughout the programme in ways that are both subtle and not so subtle. The festival ends with a celebratory 15th birthday party. See the festival's website for all the details.

BLOODY SCOTLAND (STIRLING): 21 TO 23 SEPTEMBER
Bloody Scotland is Scotland's international crime writing festival and takes place in a number of venues in central Stirling. As well as a great line-up of talks from crime writers, the festival also features the awarding of the McIlvanney Prize for Best Scottish Crime Book of the Year and a gig from the Fun Lovin' Crime Writers. THE THREE LOCHS BOOK AND ARTS FESTIVAL: 21 AND 22 SEPTEMBER
Three Lochs Book and Arts Festival – a small but perfectly formed celebration of arts and literature – is held every two years on the picturesque West coast of the Highlands of Scotland, at The Sunart Centre in Strontian. The festival's website has full details of this year's events.

BOOKENDS FESTIVAL (BENDERLOCH): 22 TO 29 SEPTEMBER
Enjoy listening to authors read their novels, old and new, be dazzled by a storyteller or simply relax in The Reading Room at The Victory Hall, Benderloch, during this week-long festival in Argyll. Find full details on the Bookends Festival website .

ISLAY BOOK FESTIVAL: 27 TO 30 SEPTEMBER
While many of the main events may include a wee dram or two, it’s not always about the whisky! This year's festival offers sessions on crime, historical and contemporary fiction, a range of non-fiction and island themes, new writing, children’s events, school visits, poetry, performances, workshops, and lots more. TIDELINES BOOK FESTIVAL (IRVINE HARBOURSIDE): 21 AND 22 SEPTEMBER
Another strong programme sees Graeme Macrae Burnet, Janice Galloway and Alex Gray take part. The festival also features the Tide Lines band and 50 Shades of Fiction (with cocktails). See the Tidelines Festival website for full details.

WIGTOWN BOOK FESTIVAL: 21 TO 30 SEPTEMBER

MAGFEST (EDINBURGH): 21 SEPTEBMER
Magfest is Scotland's biggest and best magazine event, with magazine publishers and enthusiasts coming from far and wide to be inspired by the international speakers, meet others in the industry and hear about the latest developments in the magazine world. THE BOOKSELLER CHILDREN'S CONFERENCE (LONDON): 24 SEPTEMBER
The Bookseller Children’s Conference is the UK’s biggest event of its kind for the children’s book industry, welcoming speakers from publishing houses, bookshops, literary agencies, educational trusts, libraries and more. This year the theme of the conference is ‘Global Versus Local: Keeping Books Relevant to All Children Everywhere’ - because in a global economy, how does the book world ensure it is meeting the needs of distinct groups of readers? The Skye Book Festival usually runs in September but due to lack of funding will not run in 2018.

THE GO-SEE FUND: APPLY BY 19 OCTOBER
The Go-See Grants Fund is administered by Publishing Scotland with the financial support of Creative Scotland. The purpose of the fund is to enable Scottish-based publishers to attend national and international book trade fairs for the first time. In case you missed it ...
BOOKSHOP WON IN RAFFLE
A surprised but delighted book buyer has won a Welsh bookshop in a raffle. The retiring owner of Bookends chose to raffle rather than sell to ensure that a book lover had the chance to realise their dream of running a bookshop. The Dutch winner, Ceisjan Van Heerden, will relocate to run the bookshop with a friend from Iceland. See Alison Flood's article in The Guardian 11 September 2018 .

FRANKENSTEIN DUNDEE
In a BBC Radio Scotland documentary to mark the 200th anniversary of the publication of her novel Frankenstein, Billy Kay explores Mary Shelley’s time in Dundee and how her experiences in the industrial context of the city influenced her writing. See Michael Alexander's article in The Courier of 11 September . Frankenstein Dundee was first broadcast on BBC Radio Scotland on 11 September and will be repeated on Sunday 16 September at 7 am and on the BBC iPlayer for 30 days .

AND FINALLY ...
Edinburgh's mystery paper sculptor has made a new sculpture for the first time in two years. It's in support of the bid by St Mary's Music School to move to the former Royal High School building on Calton Hill. The intricate sculpture made from old books features a cello player, flying musical notes and an excerpt from Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone .
