Secretary of State and Nextdoor Announce New Partnership to Inform Voters in Five Voter's Choice Act Counties

California Secretary of State Alex Padilla and
Nextdoor
announced a new partnership to provide election information directly to voters in neighborhoods throughout the five counties adopting the
Voter’s Choice Act in 2018
.
“Nextdoor’s online social network provides a powerful platform to directly communicate with voters,” Secretary of State Alex Padilla said. “There are a lot of exciting changes coming to voters in the five counties adopting the Voter’s Choice Act in 2018. Through Nextdoor we can share nonpartisan election information that helps inform voters and allows them to take advantage of these new improvements. This is an exciting public-private partnership that shows how government and tech can work together to empower citizens to participate in our democracy.”
Through the partnership, the Secretary of State’s office will use the Nextdoor platform to directly contact neighborhoods in the counties adopting the Voter’s Choice Act. Messages will inform voters about the changes coming to their elections, provide reminders about election deadlines, and direct them to the vote centers in their county. Nextdoor already reaches 92% of neighborhoods in the five counties adopting the Voter’s Choice Act in 2018. This is the first time Nextdoor partners with a Secretary of State's office.

Nearly 90,000 California 16- and 17- Year-Olds Have Pre-registered to Vote Since 2016

California Secretary of State Alex Padilla announced that a total of 88,700 16- and 17-year-olds have pre-registered to vote in California
since the program launched in September 2016
. California youth who pre-register have their voter registration automatically activated when they turn 18.
Of those California youth who completed the pre-registration process with the California Secretary of State:
- 43.65% (38,721) registered “No Party Preference”
- 37.39% (33,165) registered “Democratic”
- 10.36% (9,187) registered “Republican”
- 2.33% (2,065) registered “American Independent”
- 1.56% (1,380) registered “Libertarian”
- 1.03% (917) registered “Peace and Freedom”
- 0.64% (568) registered “Green”
- 0.50% (441) registered “Other”
- 2.54% (2,256) registered “Unknown”

Secretary of State Padilla and Senator Leyva Announces Expansion of Safe at Home Confidential Address Program

California Secretary of State Alex Padilla and Senator Connie M. Leyva (D-Chino) announced an expansion of California’s
Safe at Home
confidential address program to serve victims of human trafficking, as well as the household members of all program applicants. As part of the program’s expansion, the Secretary of State has updated the program’s website, informational materials, and enrollment forms. New online tools will make it easier for prospective participants to find and access resources through a new map feature.
“The Safe at Home program can help victims better their lives with greater peace of mind,” Secretary of State Alex Padilla said. “Participants can receive mail, open a bank account, register to vote, and fill out government documents confidentially. While many may take these day to day activities for granted, the Safe at Home allows victims to complete them free from fear. I have made it a priority to expand this program, and I’m proud that we are now serving victims of human trafficking and the household members of all applicants. A more user friendly website, clearer enrolling forms will help more victims receive the benefits of this program.”

California Motor Voter Program Launching April 16

Secretary of State Alex Padilla and the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) announced that the California Motor Voter program will launch April 16. All eligible Californians completing a driver license, ID card or change of address transaction at the DMV will be automatically registered to vote by the California Secretary of State, unless they opt out. More information on the California Motor Voter program is coming soon.

Secretary of State Alex Padilla Spoke to over 1000 new citizens in Sacramento, encouraging them to register to vote and become active participants in our democracy.
"Some of you came to the United States just a few years ago. Some of you came many years ago," Secretary of State Padilla said. "Some of you came as immigrants, some of you as refugees. But you all reached a point where you realized that not only is your life here now, your future is here as well. And you took the courageous step to begin the naturalization process."

California Secretary of State Alex Padilla delivered the keynote address at the
Future of California Elections
Conference
in Los Angeles
.
Secretary Padilla discussed the implementation and impact of the
Voter's Choice Act and discussed the California Motor Voter program.
Secretary of State executive staff also spoke on various panels providing agency updates to the over 250 election advocates and officials in attendance. Staff presented on the Voter's Choice Act, pre-registration data and new laws expanding language access.
Future of California Elections
is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization focused on bringing together diverse stakeholders to modernize elections and expand participation in California. The 2018 Conference explored the challenges and opportunities of California’s new election reforms, including Same Day Voter Registration and the California Voter’s Choice Act.

Secretary of State Alex Padilla spoke at a joint informational hearing of the Assembly Elections and Redistricting and Senate Elections and Constitutional Amendments committees. The hearing was focused on cybersecurity and California elections. Secretary Padilla also discussed efforts by the office to protect the integrity of our elections, as well as the needs of election officials for 2018 and beyond.

National Association of Secretaries of State meet at Conference in Washington, D.C.

Secretary Padilla joined Secretaries of State from across the country at the annual National Secretaries of State Conference in Washington D.C. During the conference,
the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI), together with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), sponsored a classified briefing for elections officials from all 50 states. Secretary Padilla issued the following statement:
“Today, Secretaries of State from across the country were briefed by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI), the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). The intelligence community once again confirmed that the tabulation of votes in the 2016 election was not manipulated or altered. However, ongoing cyber threats—including misinformation campaigns—are very real. Federal agencies and state elections officials are committed to strengthening our cyber defenses. Our ongoing collaboration will be critical as the 2018 elections begin.”

Secretary of State's Sharon Hawkins Retires After Exceptional 38 Year Public Service Career

Sharon Hawkins began her career in public service in 1980 as an Office Assistant with the Secretary of State. Over the year she moved her way up to Corporation Assistant in the Business Program Division. For 38 years she earned the trust, respect and friendship of all who worked with her and worked her entire career out of the Secretary of State's Los Angeles office.
Chief Deputy Bill Mabie presented Sharon with a resolution on behalf of Secretary of State Alex Padilla thanking her for her years of service.
On behalf of the entire Secretary of State family, congratulations Sharon and best wishes for a happy retirement!
