Day Without Shoes

Three SSJ Associates, Pat Arabio, Susan Slaninka and Peggy Dougherty, along with Peggy’s husband Bob, participated in the Day Without Shoes 5K Run/1 Mile Walk on Saturday, May 7, 2016, on the Ocean City beach.

The Ocean City High School Key Club and TOMS: One for one Shoes sponsored the event. For each race participant, TOMS donated a pair of shoes to a child in need. In addition, all registration fees were also donated to buy a pair of shoes for someone in need.

Prior to the walk, Peggy led a beautiful meditation and prayer; Peggy and Bob hosted a delicious brunch at their home.

We are so proud of our SSJ Associates in Action!

12th Annual
South Jersey Golf Tournament
Mays Landing Golf and Country Club
May 9, 2016

by Kathleen Pales SSJ
A beautiful day and 42 enthusiastic golfers added up to a very successful Golf Tournament on Monday, May 9, 2016, at the Mays Landing Golf and Country Club in Mays Landing, New Jersey.

After 19 holes of golf, prizes were awarded to 1st, 2nd and 3rd place foursomes, the man and
woman who were closest to the pin and to the man and woman who had the longest drive.

At the luncheon following the tournament, Sister Eileen Marnien SSJ thanked everyone on behalf of the Sisters of Saint Joseph, especially our sisters at Saint Joseph Villa. Sister Eileen explained that over a year ago, we began a Renewal and Revitalization Project to transform the Villa into a more home-like, community based model. She shared that we are about at the half way point with this renovation project. “By your presence here today, you are joining us in bringing this ambitious project to completion. If you are ever in the area, please let us know and we would love to give you a tour.”

Special thanks to our South Jersey Golf Committee for their time, energy and support: Peggy and Bob Dougherty, Joy Riordan, Sister Jude Gallen SSJ, Sister Sheila Murray SSJ and
Sister Dot Urban SSJ.

Saint Joseph Villa Choir
Receives a Sweet Treat!

If you visit Saint Joseph Villa on a Thursday
afternoon, from the chapel, you will hear the beautiful sounds of the Saint Joseph Choir
drifting throughout the first floor.

Sister Mary William Herron SSJ , Liturgist, began the choir at the Villa about four years ago at the request and encouragement of Marian Beems, Convent Administrator. Today the choir is in full swing and voice with approximately 30 sisters participating.

In Mary’s words: “Anyone with a good and happy heart can be in the choir. The choir sings on all the special occasions: Thanksgiving, Mass for the Volunteers, Christmas, Saint Joseph Day, The Annual Memorial Mass, Palm Sunday, Holy Thursday, Easter, etc.”

To thank Mary and the Choir for their service, an ice cream social was arranged for them on Wednesday, May 11, 2016. Mary was presented with a beautiful bouquet of flowers in appreciation for the ‘heart and soul’ she lovingly and enthusiastically pours out, as she teaches and directs the choir.

Sister Dorothy Apprich SSJ , Villa Administrator, thanked the sisters: ”You are one in a million in my book. Whenever I know you are singing, I am there!”

“As persons who are called, consecrated, and sent forth, we are mindful that the never-ending
life and love of the Blessed Trinity is the source of our life together and the center of our communities. The Spirit calls us together as we try to realize the prayer of Jesus, ‘Father, may they be one in us...so that the world may believe it was you who sent me.’(Jn 17-21)”
