Mayor Holland Hosts Health Insurance Marketplace Meeting 

Staff from the Kansas Insurance Department will be in Kansas City, Kansas today, Tuesday, to present on the Affordable Care Act.

Mayor Mark Holland will host staff from the Kansas Insurance Department Tuesday night for an informational meeting about the new Health Insurance Marketplace. This is their last stop in a series of statewide public events.

The Affordable Care Act (ACA) was enacted into law in 2010. The law addresses and attempts to fix problems in the current American health care system including the cost and quality of care and gaps in insurance coverage. Open enrollment started on October 1, 2013 and does not apply to those already signed up with Medicare.

 

The health insurance exchange is available at www.healthcare.gov. Individuals and small businesses can use this online marketplace to apply for health coverage, compare options, and enroll in a plan in one application. The Health Insurance Marketplace Call Center number is 1-800-318-2596. TTY users should call 1-855-889-4325.

 

The Kansas Insurance Department has state specific information available at www.insureks.org and at 1-800-432-2484.

BPU to Host Free Energy Efficiency Workshops in November  

The Kansas City Board of Public Utilities (BPU) will sponsor two free energy efficiency workshops for the community and customers in November. The events, which promote energy efficiency techniques and offer tips on how to reduce energy costs, will feature speakers, displays and exhibits, and several hands-on demonstrations by BPU staff and industry experts.

 

The first workshop, on Tuesday, November 5, will be held from 4:00-6:30 p.m. at the West Wyandotte Public Library, 1737 N. 82nd Street.  A second workshop, on Wednesday, November 6, will be held from 4:00-6:30 p.m. at the New South Branch Public Library, 3104 Strong Ave, in Argentine.  Tentative issues and presenters will include:

 

  • Why Energy Efficiency? - Tiffany Stovall, Energy Management Program Manager, Mid-America Manufacturing Technology Center (MAMTC). 
  • What are Energy Audits/Assessments and Why are they Important? - Mary English, Owner, Small Steps Energy Solutions. 
  • Climate Change in Wyandotte County and How Energy Efficiency Can Affect It - Richard Mabion, Founder/CEO, Building a Sustainable Earth Community.

Cabela's Dream Camp

More than 700 participants attended the Cabela's Dream Camp that was held last Saturday at Big 11 Lake.  There were activities for the whole family, including archery, hula hoops, fishing, tug-of-war, shooting range for b-b guns, face painting, and a complimentary lunch.  Participants expressed gratitude for the free, family-friendly event.

Holiday Season Safety Tips

The Kansas City, Kansas Community Policing Unit would like citizens, businesses and community partners to be mindful that robberies often more common during the holiday season. 

 

Due to the increase in robberies during this time of the year, Community Policing is hosting a robbery prevention seminar to educate the public in robbery prevention measures and other important safety information. The presentation will be held at 2:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. at the KCKPD Police Academy located on the Kansas City, Kansas Community College campus at 7340 State Avenue on the following dates:

 

  • November 6, 2013
  • November 7, 2013

 

Avoid being a victim. Protect yourself; know the facts and be prepared. Join us for this brief, but information Robbery Prevention Presentation.

Mayors' Prayer Breakfast 

The Wyandotte County Mayors, in cooperation with the Christian Businessmen's Committee, are hosting the 39th annual Mayors' Prayer Breakfast on Friday, November 8th at 7:00 a.m. at the Reardon Convention Center in Kansas City, Kansas. Seating begins at 6:45 a.m.

 

Sam West, owner and operator of Chick-fil-A, Plaza at the Speedway, will be this year's speaker. Tickets are $20 per person and must be paid in advance. To purchase tickets, reserve a table of eight or to inquire about a company sponsorship, call 913-371-3070 and ask for Cecelia. The corporate sponsorship deadline is October 23.

Based on information provided by both the UG's Public Works Department and the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT), we are able to provide motorist living in Wyandotte County an update on road and highway projects.

 

This information can be useful to prepare individuals, commuting to and from work, with early warnings on minor delays. This also encourages motorists to use alternate routes due to land and ramp closures.
  

Lake Avenue Closure   

Beginning today, Tuesday, October 22nd at 9:00 a.m., Lake Ave between S. Mill and S. 9th Street will be closed for a storm line installation. It is anticipated that the road will be reopened by 5:00 p.m. October 25th.

Drainage System Repair on K-7 to Begin in Wyandotte and Johnson Counties   

On Monday, October 21, a drainage system repair project will begin on northbound and southbound K-7 between K-32 and K-10 in Wyandotte and Johnson Counties. Project work includes the repair of deteriorated crossroad pipes and inlets along this stretch of K-7. Work will take place daily, Monday through Friday during daylight hours.

 

Project work will begin on Monday, October 21 with minimal impacts to traffic as most of the work will take place off the highway shoulder. Some daily lane closures may be required during the project. These lane closures, when needed, will be posted in advance online at: www.ksdot.org/kcmetro/laneclose.asp. Traffic will be directed through the project work zone via signage and cones.

 

The Kansas Department of Transportation urges all motorists to be alert, obey the warning signs, and "Give 'Em a Brake!" when approaching and driving through the project work zone.

 

Leavenworth Excavating & Equipment Company (Leavenworth, KS) is the primary contractor on this drainage system repair project with a total contract cost of $340,000. The scheduled completion date for the project is early December 2013, weather permitting.

This project is funded by T-WORKS, the transportation program passed by the Kansas Legislature in May 2010. Find out more about this and other T-WORKS projects at: http://kdotapp.ksdot.org/TWorks/.
