Wines of Fall
Undeniably, fall follows summer and (traditionally) signals an end to al fresco dining options and most outdoor activities, such as swimming and picnics. The upside of shorter days and longer, cooler nights is an increase in the varieties of wine that tend to show their very best this time of year.

We have been busy tasting and evaluating many wines over the past several weeks. Elegant reds of Pinot Noir and Gamay, stunning fuller-bodied whites from Burgundy and the Rhone Valley , as well as newly released, shimmering German Rieslings and late-season ros é s all a bound this time of year. Just this week we have received word that a container ship from Italy has arrived in port with some long-anticipated wines that will soon hit the shelves at Dave's as well as the glasses at Semolina Kitchen & Bar . Stop by and let's outfit you with some of the great wines of fall!

We are always pouring new wines at our  regular Thursday/Friday night (5-7) & Saturday afternoon tastings (1-4)  - these are terrific opportunities to try something new and purchase a wine you already KNOW you'll like!
Featured Wines
Fausse Piste "Super MSG!" 2016
Mourvedre, Syrah, and Grenache from Columbia Valley, Washington .
Fausse Piste, which means "wandering path" in French, is the project of Jesse Skiles who found himself wandering for sometime before he became a winemaker. His journey started as a chef, working for a time at Washington vintner Owen Roe's harvest kitchen. It was there that the world of wine was opened to home and he soon found himself traversing Europe's famous vineyard. It was in the Northern Rhone Valley, where powerful Syrahs reign king, that he truly fell in love. When he settled back down in Washington's Columbia Valley, he started a winery striving to make balanced, food-friendly wines from the grapes of the Rhone. His "Super MSG" is named for the three grapes, and features the Japanese characters for "umami" on the label. Full and lush, it certainly captures the spirit if umami with it's pleasant savory notes to compliment blackberry, plum and currant fruit flavors. Pair Super MSG up with your last fall BBQ or a warming winter pot roast.
Idlewild "The Bird" 2016
Barbera, Nebbiolo, Dolcetto, Grignolino, and Freisa  from Mendocino, California
Idlewild's "The Bird" is our newest wine in the recent trend of California wines made with Italian varietals. Winemaker Sam Bilbro grew up amongst the vines of California, but fell for the wines of Piedmont during his days in the restaurant scene. "The Bird" strives to emulate the classic Italian idea of a House Wine: light, aromatic, able to pair with a wide range of foods. The nose stands out with a range of notes from black cherry to dried herbs to orange peel. Soft and smooth on the palate, moderate acid and tannin intermingle perfectly on the palate. Idlewild's versatility makes this blend is ready to pair with any oncoming fall feast.
Ettore Germano "Herzu" 2015
Riesling from Piedmont, Italy
Piedmont is certainly not one of the first regions that comes to mind when it comes to Riesling (but it should be!). But Ettore Germano, one of our favorite producers in the region, prides itself on making fresh and powerfully aromatic whites to compliment the powerhouse Barolo they are known for. Herzu is farmed organically and fermented to almost complete dryness, with just a few grams of sugar leftover to compliment the grapes naturally intense acidity. The nose is quite fruity and floral and even a touch tropical on the initial approach. Winemaker Sergio Germano crafts a fuller-bodied expression with flavors rich citrus fruit and the palate-cleansing acidity you would expect from a mountain white. Herzu makes an excellent pairing with sushi or seafood antipasti and can stand up to lighter poultry dishes as well.

Pairing Of The Month
Smoked Duck Breast with Lelievre Auxerrois and Jeanne Gaillard Syrah
North County Smoke House  in Claremont, NH is one of the last family-owned smokehouses in the country. Not only do we love their applewood smoked bacon, but their  smoked duck breast  which recently arrived to the shop again! Delisman Joe calls it " tender, rich  and incredibly smooth in flavor and fattiness with pronounced smokiness." Get the experience of a duck breast in a delightful appetizer form, as Joe says "a little goes a long way." The rare white grape of  Auxerrois  from The Alsace region of France can more than match the   richness of the meat, while adding a mouthwatering  golden apple  flavors. For the red, Jeanne Gaillard's  Syrah  is on the lighter side, with aromas of  raspberry  and  dark cherry . A prominent  peppery spice on the finish  ties the pairing together nicely.
September Wine Specials
2012 Santa Maria La Palma          $11.00    was $12.95
Carignano from Sardinia, Italy
The winery calls this island treat "The Bombarde," named for the coastal cannon defense not far from the vineyards. This iteration of the classic northern Spanish grape is medium-bodied and silky smooth mouthfeel and soft tannins. Notes of fresh-crushed dark berries and savory herbs dance in the class. This wine is ready to be paired with pasta bolognese or a hearty meat lasagna.

2016 Walnut City       $15.25   was $17.95
Pinot Gris from Willamette Valley, Oregon
This Oregon Pinot Gris is the perfect white to carry you into chillier nights, unlike its lighter Italian counterpart, it is rich and round. Bright fruit flavors of pure tangy pear and golden apple wash across the palate, leading to a snappy, clean finish. Walnut City hand harvests all their grapes and named the winery after the walnut processing the facility they took over in 1999.

2016   El Libre         $11.00     was $11.95
Malbec from Mendoza, Argentina
Quintessential Argentine Malbec with a full body and round, soft mouthfeel. Dark, jammy fruit flavors give way to a finish of coffee-spice and palate-cleansing acidity. El Libre's name is inspired by the 1810 revolution for Argentine's independence as well as the winery's commitment to "revolutionizing" the wine industry to reflect sustainable farming practices. Enjoy this un-oaked Malbec with some of the season's last grilled treats, we are thinking beef or lamb chops.

2015 Clos Pons "Jan Petit"            $12.70    was $14.95
75% Grenache, 25% Syrah from Catalonia, Spain
Clos Pons is situation in the tiny appellation of Costers del Segre, in the rolling hills of Catalonia. Their old-vines are organically harvested and produce notes of the surrounding garrigue, think rosemary thyme and sage, as well as smooth cherry fruit and a touch of licorice and fresh pepper. "Jan Petit"spends six months in a mix of American and French oak, gaining dusty tannins. Try with steak tips.

Rkatsitelli from the Kakheti Valley, Georgia
Georgian wine has really taken off over the past two years, thanks mostly impart to the gentleman at   Georgian Toast . One of its start white grapes is Rkatsitelli, which has high-toned natural acidity and compares very favorably to German Rieslings or the aromatic whites of Northeast Italy. It is fruit-forward but supremely balanced, with notes of lemon meringue and apricot. Pop a bottle open to get the evening going or pair it up with spicy Thai noodles or a stir-fry!
