Navigator Newsletter # 011                                                  October 19, 2011
This week I was to be boarding a jet bound for Istanbul, passport full of fresh visas and luggage bulging with riding gear, looking forward to a boisterous rendezvous with fourteen friends and fellow American MotoDiscovery adventurers. From Turkey the plan was to ride 32 days through Syria, Jordan, Lebanon, Egypt and end in Israel.
The long brewing discontent of the Syrian people now have them pitted against a tyrannical government, and unfortunately rather than enjoying the incredible history and welcoming nature of that country, we sit on the sidelines hoping for peace and looking forward to the day, hopefully in 2012, when we can ride through that fascinating region. Windows open. Windows close.
Where one window closes, another opens as in the case of the South American country of Colombia. For a quarter of a century this equatorial region was deemed off limits. Today it is shining through what was once a cloud of political turmoil and is becoming the "buzz" of savvy Latin America travelers, especially those who enjoy exotic motorcycle touring.
No doubt one day I will be with our MotoDiscovery friends, marveling at the cliff palaces of Petra in Jordan, watching the sun come up from the ancient mountain top Judean fortress of Masada in Israel, wander the western deserts of Egypt and yes, sharing a glass of tea on the roadside with the colorful nomadic Bedouins of Syria. With luck that day will be this time next year. But that window, for just the moment is closed. Until then I hear the Caribbean beaches near Cartagena are spectacular and there is some great riding through the Andean foothills of Colombia....and the window is open. Care to join me? I hope so.

dakar bike
The race is legendary and no doubt has served as a platform for the development and inspiration behind the popular genre of adventure touring motorcycles. Often referred to as a "rally-raid", this nearly two week long event since 1978 represents the pinnacle in the world of off-road competition. Originally staged as the Paris to Dakar through North Africathe event was moved to South America in 2009.
MotoDiscovery is not racing the route of the daunting Dakar but we'll be an enthusiastic group of eight to ten people cheering the titans on the Dakar in Peru Tour  to victory as we intersect with the race during the final days as competitor's dash towards Lima. Toss in the mysterious Nazca Lines, the wonder of the Inca city of Machu Picchu and the Spanish Colonial city of Cuzco and this can be counted as one great touring experience.  Will you join us?  Better hurry. machu picchu

C Canyon
Copper Canyon Mexico
Two different tours discovering the Treasure of the Sierra Madres
tara      Whether by train, by old dirt mining roads or some of the most seductive sport riding pavement you'll find in the Americas, experiencing the Copper Canyon region of the Sierra Madres of Mexico has been a MotoDiscovery favorite for over thirty years.
To those not familiar with the Barrancas del Cobre, it is actually six major canyons, over 200 gorges and is at some points nearly 1,500 feet deeper than that of the American Grand Canyon of Arizona. The real Treasure of the Sierra Madres however is the indigenous Indian group called the Tarahumara, known for their long distance running endurance. Many still live in caves.

in Batoplias canyon
Tour travels by train to the canyon rim, takes a ferry to the Baja across the Sea of Cortez and is entirely on paved roads.
For those who prefer to get a little dirty, the is a bit more challenging off road event for the adventure rider.
