President's Message
Howdy Highland Park!

I hope this email finds you enjoying what’s left of summer! The Historic Highland Park Neighborhood Council is gearing up for a productive fall season. This is a great time to get involved at your neighborhood council, especially in the area of outreach. Our outreach committee just completed a series of awesome back to school events, giving away much needed backpacks and school supplies to students in our community. And, they will now begin preparing for the busy holiday season, with pumpkin patches, Santa toy events, and our annual community tree lighting ceremony.

There are also a couple key community forums in the pipeline, including a joint Land Use and Public Safety committee meeting to address the future of safety and lane configuration of N. Figueroa St. through our neighborhood. The meeting will take place on Thursday, August 31st, from 6-8 PM, at the Arroyo Seco Library.

In the meantime, we look forward to seeing you out in the neighborhood or at an HHPNC meeting very soon!

Peace,
Harvey Slater
Your HHPNC President

Take the Survey
The County of Los Angeles and the City of Los Angeles are seeking input on what is existing and what is needed for the quality of life for older adults. Input can be provided to them via a electronic survey (to be done between August 14 and September 14).  Assuming we have a desire to age within the Los Angeles region, this is our opportunity to give input to public policy officials.  The goal is to develop an action plan for the region to share with our cities and the county in the coming months. For more information and to access the survey, click here.

NASA Invites You to Become a Citizen Scientist During US Total Solar Eclipse
Learn how you can participate in a NASA experiment.

The public will have an opportunity to participate in a nation-wide science experiment by collecting cloud and temperature data from their phones. NASA’s Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment (GLOBE) Program Observer (NASA GO) is a citizen science project that allows users to record observations with a free app. On Aug. 21, NASA GO will feature a special eclipse experiment. With the app and a thermometer, citizen scientists can help observe how the eclipse changes atmospheric conditions near them, and contribute to a database used by students and scientists worldwide in order to study the effects of the eclipse on the atmosphere. Observers in areas with a partial eclipse or outside the path of totality are encouraged to participate alongside those within totality. Read more.
