June 2012

Greetings!

A couple of weeks ago, a personal essay I wrote about an ususual Scotch experience ran in the "Opinionator" section of The New York Times (woo hoo!). The link is below if you'd like to read it.

After the piece came out, a few people on Twitter and Facebook tried to guess the magazine and the magazine editor around which the story revolves. "The New Yorker?" Nope. "Vanity Fair?" Strike two. "Esquire?" Thanks for playing, but no.

Funny enough, the original version of the essay named both the magazine and the editor. In fact, the original title of the piece was "A Drink with __{Magazine editor's last name}." But since the editor is alive and well and retired to Florida, the NYT column editor suggested that it might be kindest to remove the identifying details.

Want to know which magazine had the Scotch-loving editor that had interns fixing drinks for the editor-in-chief in best "Mad Men" style? (Go on. Take a guess.  Then you can scroll down to learn....)

.....that I was an intern at New York Magazine.  (Did you guess it right?)

Please feel free to forward this newsletter to others who love all things food & drink.

Cheers,
Kara

Reuters | Spirited Traveler

Although I've long been a fan of rye whiskey and its intense, spicy bite, until this week I'd never heard of softer Maryland-style rye. And now, my Manhattan may never be the same.

Featured Recipe

The Highand Tequila Fling
 by Kara Newman

No tequila shooters here! This is an elegant, spirit-forward sipper, loosely based on the classic Highland Fling.

1 ½ ounces tequila reposado

1 ½ ounce chamomile-infused dry vermouth*

½ tsp agave nectar

1 dash Fee Bros peach bitters

Combine all ingredients in a mixing glass, with ice. Stir well for 20 seconds and strain into a chilled coupe glass. Garnish with orange peel knot.

*To make infused vermouth: dunk 4 chamomile tea bags in hot water, then remove and place the tea bags in 1 cup vermouth. Allow to steep for at least 5 minutes, then squeeze out any excess liquid and discard the tea bags. Makes enough for several drinks.
