We teach children how to read books but not how to read their own writing...
Unless we show children how to read their own writing, their work will not improve."
-- Donald Graves, Author of "A Fresh Look at Writing"

Dear Parents,
We are so very proud to share with you The Park Maitland Press, our students' first online magazine -- a publication written by the students for the students. This year, students in 6th grade can choose their favorite elective classes offered each quarter such as Fantasy Football Math, Personal Finance, iMovie Documentaries, Shakespeare Through Performance, Twitter Takeover, Study Hall, Coding, and more!
The students in Journalism are excited to debut the first edition of their magazine.  Publishing written work allows students to get motivated and excited about writing when they know it's for an authentic purpose. In addition, in this week's news you will read other writing samples from various grades. Teaching students how to read, proof, and edit their own writing so that they are proud to share the final product is an important process that starts in K-5! Congratulations to Brett Carrier, 5th grade ESW teacher and journalism elective teacher for helping students to launch The Park Maitland Press!  Please share the first edition of this magazine with your child! Read The Park Maitland Press here!

Happy reading!

HALLOWEEN FUN DAY
K4 and K5 students are looking forward to a fantastic "Halloween Fun Day" on Monday, Oct. 31st.  The children will wear costumes and participate in a parade around campus.

Students in grades 1-6 may participate by wearing a festive Fall shirt with casual day bottoms and fun accessories -- such as a Halloween headband or spooky socks!
Picture Retake Day & Cady Kids Photos
Student photos went home this week. If you ordered photos and did not receive them, or if there was a problem with your order, please call Cady Studios at 800.547.6237.

Bad hair day?  Don't worry, email [email protected] for your child's name to be placed on the retake day list. Simply return the original package of photos on picture day, and Cady Studios will retake them for free.    If your child was absent on the original picture day, his/her name is already on the retake list.

Note from the Front  Desk
Unless it is an absolute emergency, please call the front office with information about any NEW carpool formations before school begins!   It is very helpful to call in advance due to the busy afternoon rush.
If your child would like another star to decorate for our Veteran's Day Assembly, you can find it here!

We were amazed at the ingenuity and creativity that our parents and students brought to the Jack o'Lantern contest this year.  Thank you to everyone who participated. Students, faculty, and parents in carpool thoroughly enjoyed this year's unforgettable pumpkin exhibition!
SCHOOL-WIDE COLLECTION
Now Through November 20th

Bring in non-perishable food items (cans, boxed foods, etc.) from now until Nov. 20th to help support school-wide efforts to feed the hungry right here in Central Florida!

If we reach our school-wide goal of 1,500 cans, students will earn a "dress down day" where they can wear casual, nonuniform clothes to school on December 1st!

All donations will go to "A Grateful Mind," a local organization that packages and cooks meals weekly to bring to impoverished families throughout the Maitland and Orlando area. See their website for more information at www.agratefulmind.org.
