Patriotism is alive and well at Park Maitland School!  This week, we enjoyed honoring our heroes, the United States Veterans, during our Annual Veteran's Day Ceremony!  It was heartwarming to see the pride on the faces of our many honored Veterans and the looks of respect and awe in the faces of our students.  Stories were told, songs were sung, poetry recited, lessons taught, flags folded, ROTC marching, scouts leading, Veterans sharing, and more -- all in honor of the special men and woman who have or are still sacrificing so much for our freedom!

A special thanks to:
  • Major General Metcalf, our passionate keynote speaker, Honored and decorated US Veteran and Winter Park resident.
  • Drill Sergeant Foley for his leadership with our Cub Scouts.
  • The many honored Veterans who attended our ceremony and allowed us to pay our deepest respect and gratitude!  You are our heroes!

Patriotism and respect for our country and its history remain a valuable and integral part of our school curriculum and our daily celebrations as we work to prepare our students to be productive and successful leaders and peacemakers of tomorrow!   The need for us to model the importance of our nation coming together as a human race to show love, kindness, and respect towards our Veterans and one another is stronger than ever.

Yes, patriotism is alive and well at Park Maitland School!

God Bless America!

Wear Blue for World Diabetes Day  -- Monday
We gathered on Thursday to hear two brave Park Maitland students, Lukas and  Mikella, tell their story of living with Type 1 diabetes. We would like to recognize and support them on World Diabetes Day, Monday, November 14th by raising money for Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

Students will be allowed to wear blue tops and accessories and casual day bottoms for a $2 donation (or a monetary donation of any kind).  Please donate and help us create a world without T1D!

November is Diabetes Awareness Month, to find out more about Type 1 Diabetes and the signs and symptoms please follow this  link.

Many of you may not know, but one of our parents happens to be one of the top tenors in the world and he is about to film a TV Special at The Dr. Phillips Center.  He's opened for Lionel Richie, Barbra Streisand exclaimed "You're going to be a big star," and now he comes home to where it all started in Orlando.  Fernando Varela (father of Zeke Varela in 1st Grade Purple) is signed to Universal Music and filming his debut PBS TV special on Nov. 30th at 7:30 PM.  This breathtaking tenor will be backed by a 60 piece orchestra and David Foster's band.  The million dollar production includes special guest Jackie Evancho, along with a few other surprises.  Fernando has offered a discount code just for Park Maitland parents at 50% off.  The code is: BOGO - use the code once you are on the ticket page at the Dr. Phillips Center website. Let's come out on November 30th and support one of our fellow parents.   To find out more about Fernando go to:  www.fernandovarela.com  or to go directly to the ticket page visit:  www.FernandoPBS.com

Bring in non-perishable food items (cans, boxed foods, etc.) from now until Nov. 22nd to help support school-wide efforts to feed the hungry right here in Central Florida!

If we reach our school-wide goal of 1,500 cans, students will earn a "dress down day" where they can wear casual, nonuniform clothes to school on Nov. 29th!
The homeroom that brings in the most food items will win the  GOLDEN TURKEY trophy to  be displayed all year!

All donations will go to "A Grateful Mind," a local organization that packages and cooks meals weekly to bring to impoverished families throughout the Maitland and Orlando area. See their website for more information at  www.agratefulmind.org.

Ms. McGuire's 3rd grade class found inspiration in artistic photography taken by one of our wonderfully talented owners, Ms. Mary Margaret Bowen.  Ms. McGuire  printed photos taken by Ms. Bowen and made a collage for each group of tables in her class.  We love how artistic photography sparked imagination and thought!

Tuesday, November 8th wasn't only Election Day, it was National Steam Day!  Our very kind K5 Purple class surprised Mrs. Blomquist with an appreciation parade during homeroom class.  Ms. Blomquist was overwhelmed with gratitude as the students cheered "we believe in STEAM" and presented her with a chalkboard that said "You STEAM so much to us!"

Guest Scientist, the Kohn Family, introduced "Elephant Toothpaste" to a K5 class.

On Tuesday, Park Maitland students went to the polls to vote their choice for President!  Voting occurred during Social Studies classes inside patriotic voting booths constructed by 5th and 6th students. Votes were collected on iPads via Google Forms. Our youngest 4 and 5 year-old students even joined in the fun by casting their ballots on the type of plant they would like keep in their classroom -- fern or cactus.
Pup Pup "The Mayor" joined us on Election Day to cast his ballot.  He even stuck around to have a professional photo shoot by Cady Studios!
