Did you know...

Last week, December 10th the annual Nobel prize ceremonies took place in Stockholm, Sweden.
This year marked 50 years since the Georgian Martin Luther King Jr. became the youngest person in history to win a Nobel Peace Prize.
It has never been officially known who nominated King for the Nobel Peace Prize; Nobel documents with details about the awards including nominations, notes and reports are classified for 50 years. But now as they are revealed, it appears he was actually nominated by eight members of the Swedish Parliament together with the American Friends Service Committee (the Quakers).

The Swedish Excellence Award

During the Lucia Gala, SACC-Georgia handed out their first Swedish Excellence Awards. The award was given to one person and one company in Georgia with Swedish connections that has, in one way or another bettered our community.

The company award was given to Elekta;
"Not only have they supported our Chamber without hesitation for many years, but if you research their impact on the community, you will in fact find page after page of charitable organizations that they have supported.  Not only is this Swedish company the leader in their field, but the depth of their outreach and what they give back is undeniably impressive. For this reason, we give our first Swedish Excellence Award to Elekta."

The other award was given Swedish Rene McClatchey;
"This person is Swedish, but thankfully for Georgia, she brought her knowledge, experience and compassion with her when she moved to Georgia.
20 years ago she started a small camp for bereaved children who have lost a parent or sibling. Today, she serves over 200 children a year with multiple grief camps every year. The kids attend for free and she raises all of the money on her own.
She is truly a shining star and she has impacted the lives of so many children for the better. For this reason, we give our second Swedish Excellence Award to Dr. Rene McClatchey."

The 29th Annual Lucia Gala

The Swedish-American Chamber of Commerce, Georgia held its 29th annual Lucia Gala on Friday, December 5th, at the beautiful venue Greystone in Piedmont Park, Atlanta. This signature event for the Swedish community in Atlanta, celebrates the ancient tradition of Saint Lucia.

After the success of last year's Lucia performance, it was decided that renowned singer Emily Samson Tepe, also known as IVA would be performing as the Lucia once again this year.

An initiating cocktail hour with the Swedish warm Christmas beverage "glgg" and hors d'oeuvres was followed by the Lucia procession, after which a traditional Swedish Christmas Smorgasbord was served.

The evening ended with desserts and dancing to live music by The Francisco Vidal Band. This year, the event attracted around 150 guests from the Swedish-American community in Georgia.

A new addition for this year's Gala was the introduction of the Swedish Excellence Award, given to one person and one company in Georgia with Swedish connections that has bettered our community.
