Global Governance for Nutrition and the role of UNSCN
This report from the United Nations Standing Committee on Nutrition (UNSCN) describes the network of public and private actors with mandates to fight malnutrition, and provides recommendations regarding the role of UNSCN as global governance body. The report also identifies three challenges for global nutrition governance, namely better accountability for results, clearer lines of responsibility for certain technical areas, and the need for better governance and increasing policy coherence of nutrition-sensitive interventions across different sectors (social protection, agriculture, education, among others). Community Update
This month, we look at nutrition from three different angles. First, global governance: the UNSCN Report is a unique attempt to look at the wide range of global payers in the nutrition arena through a network perspective, and highlights the need for increased coordination among efforts of all actors. Second, advocacy: a collection of moments from the WBG Spring Meetings makes the case for donors' renewed commitment to global nutrition-related initiatives, such as Investing in the Early Years and the #FoodRevolution. Third, program design: how to design and carry out rigorous process, cost, and impact evaluations of complex nutrition-sensitive interventions. Building even greater momentum for nutrition globally requires these aspects - and many more - to be addressed, and subsequently translated in the design and implementation of effective nutrition-sensitive interventions, duly coordinated among actors and across different sectors.
