Using ScrapSimple Paper Templates to Create Unique Background Paper
Tutorial created using Photoshop CS2 with Windows XP
Scrap Girls offers many products that allow the digital scrapbooking artist to create unique digital elements. ScrapSimple Paper Templates helps you create digital paper in the color and style you want. In this tutorial, you will learn how to use ScrapSimple Paper Templates to quickly create digital paper.
First, create a 12x12-inch, 300 dpi transparent document in your graphics program. Next, open a ScrapSimple Paper Template file. For this tutorial, a paper template from ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Realms of Glory 2 Biggie will be used. The template chosen is #9, which has a nice, all-over pattern with a bit of distressing.
Duplicate the paper template file onto the 12x12 transparent document. Close the original paper template file.
Under "Image," go to "Duplicate" to make a copy of this image. Duplicate this image several times. There are many different methods for using paper templates to make paper, and this tutorial will show you several basic methods. Once you learn these techniques, you will be able to combine them and use them with other Scrap Girls products to create unique digital paper.
Prepare the first document for experimentation by coloring the bottom transparent layer. With the Paint Bucket Tool selected, choose a color (such as magenta, as shown in this tutorial), activate the bottom layer, and "pour" the paint over that empty, transparent layer.
The first and easiest method for using paper templates is to use Blending Modes. In the Layers Palette, click on the top layer which contains the paper template. This activates this layer. Just above this layer, you will find a drop down menu that should by default display the word "Normal." This menu controls the Blending Mode option for that layer. Change this option from "Normal" to "Soft Light." Automatically, the black template changes to a slightly darker shade of your background color, creating a very simple digital background.
Now, change the Blending Mode of the paper template back to "Normal." Go to Image> Adjustments> Brightness/Contrast and increase the brightness all the way, dragging the control to the far right. Now change the Blending Mode to "Linear Dodge" and watch the paper change to magenta with a lighter pink design.
Try changing the Blending Modes to see what happens. Adjust the brightness, up or down, and experiment with the Blending Modes again. Get to know what each of the Blending Modes can do, and you will be able to create very simple, but unique digital scrapbooking paper.
Prepare another document for experimentation by filling the bottom transparent layer with a color, such as gold. For this second method, you will be creating a clipping mask. Next, activate the template layer and add another transparent layer above it. Activate the new layer and fill it with a blue. With the top blue layer still active, right-click and choose "Create Clipping Mask," or alternately choose that option from the top menu under "Layer." Creating a clipping mask conforms the top layer to the template layer; think of it as wrapping it around that layer. You can then change the color of the top layer as your layout requires.
Yet another method for using paper templates is to apply a layer style to the paper template. Prepare another of the documents by filling the bottom transparent layer with color, such as aqua. Next, activate the template layer. Now make sure your Color/Swatches/Styles palette is visible, and click on the Styles tab. You may already have styles loaded in this palette that you would like to use. In this tutorial, ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Old Metal 5101 Super Biggie will be used. If needed, load the styles of your choice. With the template layer activated, choose a style and click on it to apply the style to this layer. You can click on other styles to change the look. This makes creating paper very fast, easy, and fun.
The three methods discussed here are just a few ways to use paper templates to create your own digital scrapbooking paper. As you learn more about your graphics program, you will be able to combine these methods as well as learn other ways in which you can manipulate ScrapSimple paper templates. The important thing is to experiment and try new things. You never know what beautiful creations await!
