American Fork High School
Principal's Message

Cybersensitivities
Manners are a sensitive awareness of the feelings of others. If you have that awareness, you have good manners, no matter what fork you use.
~ Emily Post
It used to seem so simple, didn't it? Manners meant saying please and thank you, opening doors for others, and eating with the correct utensil. Being a good citizen meant being a good citizen in this physical world, not a cyberworld, where it is possible to be rude and unkind while remaining anonymous and unaccountable. So, while we don't have to worry about which fork to use in cyberspace, we do need to have a "sensitive awareness" about the feelings of others. And our children need to be taught and repeatedly reminded that feelings matter whether they are communicating online or in person.
With something to think about . . .
Sincerely,
Daniel P. Weishar
Principal

Get Credit, Get Experience, Get Paid: CTE Internships Available
An Internship with AF Career and Technical Education is a great learning experience for high school students. Internship students receive high school credit, and credit toward a CTE pathway, as well as getting paid.  There are many internships available in areas of CTE including Agriculture, Business & Marketing, Family & Consumer Science, Health Science, Information Technology, Technology & Engineering.  Here’s what senior Malynne Davis had to say about her internship experience in the FACS Department at American Fork Junior High.
I have several friends that have asked “Why did you choose to intern and at a school no less?” My answer… I want to be a Family and Consumer Science teacher when I grow up but I'm not sure if it's the right path for me. This internship was a chance to see what it's like to teach, and it has given me hands on experience. My CTE classes are the thing that got me interested in the first place. They have given me experience in this field. I have had a lot of fun experiences during this internship. I was really nervous to get up in front of a class and do anything. When my mentor came to me and asked me to teach part of her class I was terrified. When the time came, I got up there and it was nowhere near as bad as I thought it was going to be. Because of this experience, I have more confidence in my abilities. I have also learned that teaching isn't just getting up and spitting out facts. It is a lot of preparation, grading, making sure the kids understand, and much more. Thank you so much for this experience!

Malynne Davis is also a “FACS Early Childhood Education Career Pathway” completer. She will have an amazing portfolio and resume’ when she graduates! Congratulations Malynne!

HOSA - BLOOD DRIVE
On Wednesday, October 11, our HOSA: Future Health Professionals students hosted an ARUP blood drive.   www.hosa.org  ARUP is the sole blood provider for Primary Children's, Shriners Hospital, University Medical Center and Huntsman Cancer Institute. Primary Children's alone has a 300% need for blood most of the time because it can only be 5 days old for children and infants, whereas adults can receive blood as old as 42 days.

Our goal was to collect 100 units of blood. We signed up over 140 students to come donate and COLLECTED 90 UNITS of blood, which was our second largest collection ever. Thank you for donating and helping save lives. These donations helped our HOSA organization raise $200 which will help offset cost to our students for their state competition in March. Our next blood drive will be held on April 17 from 8-2 in the North Gym. Walk-ins are welcome!

PTSA NEWS
AF’s PTSA has been busy this fall! We’ve met several times with Mr. Weishar to discuss and give input on issues impacting our students. We sponsored a luncheon and get-to-know-you activity for students new to AF, helped with fall pictures, provided dinner for faculty and staff on conference night, and are preparing for the upcoming PTA Reflections contest.

We’re looking ahead at ways to support the students’ Festival of Trees activities, plus we're investigating sites for Grad Night this spring. It seems there are always activities ahead to be planned. Our friendly group would welcome volunteers willing to help with PTSA events. Interested? Contact President Charissa Little at  jamesonandcharissa@hotmail.com

Our PTSA stands in support of this great school. If you didn’t join PTSA at registration, we encourage parents, students and faculty to join us with your dues of $6 today. Did you know that nearly half of our member families purchase a membership for both parent and student? Did you know that a student membership provides a discount to PTSA activities like Grad Night? So, while you’re thinking about it, stop by the finance office or online at Alpine One Stop via the school’s website. Welcome to American Fork’s PTSA!
