Hope that you are enjoying the summer and finding time to relax and re-energize. We continue to enjoy the valley and gardens and the Evolving Families community vegetable garden has been bountiful.
It's been an exciting month at JCHAC, particularly with the Tesla Health Festival which proved to be a great success. We had many visitors who wandered the property, exploring the labyrinth, eating Serbian food, investigating Tesla electric cars and learning the impact of electricity and music in relation to plant growth. They also learned about "dirty electricity" such as microwave ovens, cell phones, wi-fi, and child monitors, how it can make people ill, and potential solutions such as crystals, electrotherapy beds and various modern technical tools for healing and measuring good electricity. Several people visited for most of the day which was a testament to a great event.
Linda Marshall held a wonderful exhibition that honoured her mother Gloria Marshall. It was a beautiful tribute to the legacy of Gloria and the various art that she created during her life time. People who attended the opening reception enjoyed creating, and taking home, a piece of art based on Gloria's carvings.
The gallery and valley was "alive" with youths participating in the Leadership Quest Camp for Kids. The activities focused on areas such as Sport, Drama as well as a Speaking Club. Plenty of learning wrapped up into a whole lot of fun!!
Continuing to be popular are the Tea Leaf Reading sessions with Sarah Adamson. This is a great opportunity to enjoy a delightful afternoon of tea and visit the gallery and gardens. People have been impressed with Sarah's abilities. These are afternoon sessions with groups of up to 6 or 7 people. If interested in attending one of these sessions, please contact: Janet Jansson
The Labryinth continues to be open. It was of particular interest at the Tesla Health Festival. The pattern of the Labyrinth is similar to the Tesla coils. It is inspired after the ancient 11th century stone labyrinth found inside the Chartres Cathedral in France. Pilgrims would walk or crawl and follow the pattern while meditating for divine spiritual guidance and healing. If you have discovered the ancient practice of "earthing" or grounding your feet and body to the earth's geomagnetic grid, you will especially appreciate our healing field.
September is a great time to explore new opportunities. Have you ever thought of trying NIA, or participating in a Drum Circle. If you'd like to discover or enhance your artistic talents, perhaps attending a Watercolour Printmaking Workshop or the weekly Watercolour Printmaking Classes is for you. Please scroll below for more details.
Also below are details on our upcoming Annual "Sybil's Choice" Friend's Exhibition. This exhibition is in August with an opening reception on August 10th. Please join us.
Have you, or someone you know, thought about renting gallery space for an exhibition? The month of September is currently available. Cost for a 4 week period is $2,000. Perhaps a group exhibit to split the cost and share the space may be an idea for you to consider. Please scroll below (JCHAC Exhibition Rentals) for further information. If interested, please contact Bill Hewitt by e-mail or call 905-257-4730.
To envision youthful, happy summer days, spent at a local creek with picnics and haying, please scroll down to read this month's "Joshua Creek's Legacy, Memories of Sybil Rampen".
We continue to welcome volunteers at JCHAC. If there is anyone you know who would be happy to give back to the community, please tell them about us. September may be a great time of year to consider joining our team. As little or as much time you can contribute is very much appreciated. If you would like more information, please email Janet Jansson
Enjoy August!!
Warmly,

Friends of JCHAC are welcome to walk the Labyrinth in the meadow during Gallery hours. The Labyrinth is also available by appointment and invitation. Evolving Families is working in collaboration with JCHAC to maintain and promote the Labyrinth. All offerings are gratefully accepted. The offering box is located inside the Gallery beside the sign-in sheet. You may also choose to become a Friend of Joshua Creek Heritage Art Centre and enjoy the benefits of use. Click here for more information. Sign In:
You are requested to sign in before you walk. The sign in sheet is located in the Gallery. Parking:
Please park in the area of the Gallery. To access the Labyrinth follow the lane and cross the bridge. A path, marked on your left, will lead you to the Labyrinth in the field. Length of Walk:
To walk the curving path of the Labyrinth will take 45 - 60 minutes depending on your pace. Total distance: 2.5 km. Continual mowings throughout the summer keep the Labyrinth path visible. The grasses will continue to grow. The milkweed blossom naturally offers a clear definition of the pathway. Milkweed is the only source of food for the caterpillar of the monarch butterfly. The balance of the environment requires the symbiotic relationship between the monarch butterfly and the poisonous milkweed. For more information on the migration of the monarch and the journey that takes a fourth generation butterfly to make it to Ontario.
Gift yourself a time out. We invite you to turn off your cell phones and the buzz of everyday life and come for a walk. The sounds you will clearly hear are those of nature. The sense of calm after a meditative walk - priceless.

Joshua Creek Legacy
Memories of Sybil Rampen
Once upon a time my parents would pack a picnic and take all five children to Bloodroot Valley on the Base Line. We would wade in the shallow running water to collect tiny crabs. We would perch on the rocks, climb the steep banks and marvel that such a place of beauty was so near to our farm; a hidden valley with the 16 Mile Creek crossed by a narrow plank bridge. I took my five children for picnics as well. But now it is gone, no place to park, a wire fence, KEEP OUT!
But, the memory remains.
Summer on the farm was spent out of doors. Haying was a big item with reluctant horses pulling the hay wagon with ropes carefully arranged on it to pull the load up into the mow.
Men with long handled 3 pronged forks would swing the hay up higher and higher and we children would spring about trampling it down. When it was high enough, we had a delicious ride where the horses struggled up the dump and into the barn. Ropes were attached to the slings and the load slowly lifted high up to the tracks and pulled along by the horses descending down towards the pond. We would hold our breath as it rattled towards the back of the barn. At a given moment we would holler to the horses to stop and then pull the trip rope. The hay would drop suddenly, the empty slings returned to the wagon and off for another load. Sometimes the trip rope was triggered before it reached its destination. Oh dear!

JCHAC Exhibition Rentals
We are presently taking proposals for future exhibitions in the Art Gallery. JCHAC Gallery is the home to ten shows each year with each exhibition running for one month to six weeks. The focus of the Gallery is to be a venue for emerging artists. Should a showing by a single artist seem daunting consider an exhibition of a collective of three or four artists.
We look forward to hearing from you and discussing opportunities. Please contact Bill Hewitt by e-mail or call 905-257-4730.
