The valley continues to be without snow, by Janet Jansson

JCHAC Newsletter
January 2015

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

We hope that you all had a wonderful time over the holidays and spent some special time with your loved ones, creating new, everlasting memories.  It wasn't a white Christmas, and so different from last year's ice storm, but the mild weather hasn't been too hard to take.

The Labryinth at JCHAC continues to be open, however, please only walk the labryinth when it is grassy.  Do not walk when there is snow and ice.

January typically brings a fresh start to our lives.  A time for new year resolutions and perhaps kick starting some new, or renewed, activities.  A time for reflection and a time for doing those things that we've often put off for some reason or another.

There is still an open spot for someone at the Photography Workshop, led by Bill Ellis.  This is a great workshop series, taking place over four evenings.  Please see below for more details.

If you're looking to try something new, please see the segments below for more details on Watercolour Printmaking Workshops, Nia, Drum Circle, Laughter Yoga, Oakville Stitchery Guild and Flying Pigs Arts & Letter Society.

Tea Leaf Readings are now on the second Sunday of each month.  For this, Nia and Laughter Yoga DATE CHANGES - please see appropriate segments below.

Also, please remember JCHAC for facility rentals. If anyone you know is interested in renting the space for a special event, please see the bottom of this newsletter for more information.

Our current exhibition is "Elder Art, the Youth of Yesterday" which runs until January 25th.  On January 30th, we will feature "Art from the Heart", with an opening reception on Sunday, February 1st.  For more details on these two shows, please see the segments below "Current" and "Upcoming" Exhibitions.

On February 15th, for the second year, we will host Winterfest.  Last year proved to be a lot of fun for those who attended.  Families skated on the pond, tobogganed in the valley, drank hot chocolate and enjoyed indoor activities involving art and music. What a wonderful way to spend time with your family and friends. Please see "Upcoming" Exhibition segment below.

Please continue to watch out for snow and ice which can make surfaces slippery.  Keep safe !!!

Wishing each of you and your families a wonderful New Year.  One filled with good health and much happiness.

Warmly,
Janet Jansson, Newsletter Editor

Memories of Sybil Rampen

My father. Captain Hugh Calverley, came back from WW1 shell shocked, wounded and gassed and as he phrased it, "put out to pasture".  Gradually he healed, and with his anchor "Diggie" raised fived children. His oldest son went off to WW2 and came back home. This farm next door was purchased. He and his bride made it their first home. Then he and his young family chose the West.

I happened by and announced that it was my turn. Here we have raised our five sons but now they too have flown.  I have put my energy into JCHAC with my father's message that there is no better way to provide air, earth and space for coming generations.

"The beginning of a road.

Newborn babies,

Adoration wonder,

Two hearts beat as one.

Roads leading to a mountain,

Eagles flying overhead.

Comes a day toward the end of mortal life

Your spirit soaring to unknown roads

The illimitable pastures of the soul.

Hugh Calverley 1968

CURRENT EXHIBITION
Elder Art,
The Youth of Yesterday

December 5th to January 25th
Opening Tea Party
Sunday December 7th, 2 pm - 5 pm

Please join us in paying respect to four local artists by attending "Elder Art, The Youth of Yesterday". Inez Demuynck, Gisela Sommer, Shirley Erskine and Sybil Rampen are considered our elders.

They are between the ages of 83 and 95 and have lived through the Great Depression, WW I and WW II.  They are people who have persevered through times of struggle and evolving technologies and have greatly contributed to our society.

The word "Elder" brings to mind, "wisdom", "intelligence", "creativity" and "respect" - all of which describes these wonderful artists.

This exhibition showcases their artwork and includes various mediums from fibre art to watercolours , origami sculptures to acrylics and oils.  Something for everyone.

You do not want to miss this important exhibition dedicated to "The Youth of Yesterday".  Joshua Creek Heritage Art Centre plans on making this an annual show.

UPCOMING EXHIBITION
Art from the Heart   Art From The Heart Logo

January 30th to March 15th
Opening Tea Party
Sunday February 1st
2 pm - 5 pm

Art From The Heart is a provocative exhibition by artists who have experienced adversity and challenge and have incorporated this into their artistic practice, inspiration and presentation. The show will reach into the community in a unique and compelling way.

This show focuses on different ways of seeing and experiencing the world, reflected in artwork.  It is about sharing, awareness, artistic expression and courage.  The reality of each life made visible is a powerful tool.  It is about art originating from inner spaces not experienced by most people and about the creativity which emerges from such spaces and experiences. The reality of each life made visible is a powerful tool.

Laughter Yoga is the happiest wellness program ever! It is a joyful way to connect with others at any age or any fitness level. It can be performed gently or moving throughout the room with full energy and enthusiasm! Studies by the National Institute of Health and various medical schools have proven the effectiveness of laugher yoga for mental alertness, pain relief & increased immune system function. This unique exercise routine that combines group laughter exercises with yoga breathing allows anyone to laugh without using jokes, humor or comedies.

It's been scientifically proven that the brain can't tell the difference between fake and real laughter so it is okay to fake it until it becomes real. Trust us...that won't take long!

January 13th-Master Drummer, AMARA KANTE

Amara is a world class musical artist who shows people how to have conversations and dialogue with drums in an easy, authentic way that has enabled people to listen, hear and unite in the human spirit.

Amara is one of the world's foremost proponents of the now world-renowned music and dance culture of the Manding people in West Africa. Amara received his calling at the tender age of 7 when he was called to play with the legendary musical group Koteba of Abidjan. His instruments such as dunduns, bara, n'tama, and krin, his encyclopedic memory of rhythms and exceptional technique on the djebme drum soon led to acknowledgment of his status as a master drummer.

January 27th - NORMANDO JONES

Normando Jones is dedicated to music, entertainment and education in a wide range of musical communities.

The love of music and the wonderful benefits that it provides is what propels Normando. His never ending ambition to bring new and old ideas together to create a musical experience is second to none.

Music is the center of life.  From a young age we all identify our experiences with a particular song or piece of music. That translates into the need to have the appropriate music to help create a special moment.  Normando believes music seduces our heart to awaken, to feel more deeply, boldly, and colorfully the preciousness of being human.

We are presently taking proposals for future exhibitions in the Art Gallery. JCHAC Gallery is the home to ten shows each year with each exhibition running for one month to six weeks. The focus of the Gallery is to be a venue for emerging artists. Should a showing by a single artist seem daunting consider an exhibition of a collective of three or four artists.

We look forward to hearing from you and discussing opportunities. Please contact Bill Hewitt by e-mail or call 905-257-4730.
