The official start of the summer is here. The gardens are in full bloom, the sounds of summer are singing all around us. Time to re-energize, spend time outdoors with family and friends and enjoy the warmth of the sun. To envision earlier memories of hot summer days, please scroll down to read Joshua Creek's Legacy, Memories of Sybil Rampen.
We are winding down the Artists of Joshua Creek show (you can still catch it up to July 6th) and are looking forward to the exhibitions of Tesla and Gloria Marshall in July as well as the Leadership Quest Camp for Kids (Please see below for more details on each of these events).
In June we saw much success with the Artists of Joshua Creek show. The calibre of art reached a new height exuding favourable comments from guests who came to see the exhibition and visit the gardens at JCHAC. Several pieces of artwork have now found new homes.
Also found to be popular was the Tea Leaf Reading sessions with Sarah Adamson. An afternoon tea party was held late June with much success. A guest's comment: " It was a good time and fascinating to watch people's reactions when their readings hit the mark." We currently have 2 afternoon tea parties scheduled for July and will be scheduling a session for late August at an introductory cost of $10. These sessions will be groups of 5 to 8 people. Please bring your friends and enjoy a delightful afternoon of tea and visit the gallery and gardens. If interested to participate in July or August, or any potential future dates, please contact: Janet Jansson
If you are a "Friend" of JCHAC, please watch out for an invitation to participate in the Annual "Sybil's Choice" Friend's Exhibition. This is an opportunity to showcase your two-dimensional artwork. We will be collecting artwork near the end of July for a show commencing August 1st. To learn more about being a "Friend", please see the "Friends of Joshua Creek" segment below.
We continue to welcome volunteers at JCHAC. If there is anyone you know who would be happy to give back to the community, please tell them about us. If you would like more information, please email Bill Hewitt
Evolving Families has been preparing for the community garden. They have over 500 plants that have been budding indoors for over two months and are looking for volunteers to share in the garden.
If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Peaches

33rd Annual Spring Show
The Artists of Joshua Creek Studio
| Watercolour Printmaking with Collage Roberta Eustace |
Each year Joshua Creek invites the talented students of Joshua Creek Studio to share their art and heart of creating by exhibiting in the JCHAC Spring Show. This year, students of Community Living Oakville will also have their art on display.
Twenty years ago a new medium using nontoxic watercolor printmaking was invented at Joshua Creek. Since its inception it has been refined and the technique expanded upon. Artists invent, explore and experiment with wet colour on a rigid surface. Rolling the plate through the press and printing images is only the beginning. The ensuing masterpieces evolve and become treasured pieces of art.
Extraordinary art is created in the dynamic, innovative and inspiring environment of the Studio. We share it with you in our exhibition.

Gloria Marshall
July 16 to July 27
July 20 Opening Reception
Gloria started her art career in Oakville as a fiber artist and over the course of her lifetime and world travels she created a body of work that includes weaving, sculpture, painting, collage, book art, writing, poetry, installations and photography. This show is a retrospective of a lifetime of artistic output.
"As one ages, one tends to reflect more and more on where their journey has taken them and how each segment experienced has taught and prepared them for the next. My work represents the footsteps taken, the lineages followed and passed on and where I stood in the midst of it. What a privilege to have been a part of it all" - Gloria Marshall

Leadership Quest Camp for Kids
July 14 to July 18
Leadership Quest is a one week day camp that gives youth an opportunity to discover leadership skills, build confidence and self-esteem by exploring values and meeting role models. Campers experience leadership through sport, drama and speaking. Some say it's our unique location at Joshua Creek Heritage Art Centre that creates the magic. Others say it's the adult coaches who deliver an awesome program that make us stand out. The way we measure success is by the smiles on the faces of the campers and their parents!
This is our fourth year running the program for 7 to 14 year olds and we have some campers who have been with the program since day one! New this year is an advanced program for 13 and 14 year olds.
We have a few spots still available. For more information, please visit: School of Leadership or contact co-founder Darla Campbell at 416-562-9082 or Darla's email

Labyrinth
Friends of JCHAC are welcome to walk the Labyrinth in the meadow during Gallery hours. The Labyrinth is also available by appointment and invitation. Evolving Families is working in collaboration with JCHAC to maintain and promote the Labyrinth. Please contact Peaches at Evolving Families for any inquires that you may have regarding the use of the Labyrinth. Labyrinth Hours: Same as Gallery hours Tuesday - Sunday 1- 4 Offerings: To assist with upkeep of the Labyrinth an offering of $5.00 is suggested. All offerings are gratefully accepted. The offering box is located inside the Gallery beside the sign-in sheet. You may also choose to become a Friend of Joshua Creek Heritage Art Centre and enjoy the benefits of use. Click here for more information. Sign In: You are requested to sign in before you walk. The sign in sheet is located in the Gallery. Parking: Please park in the area of the Gallery. To access the Labyrinth follow the lane and cross the bridge. A path, marked on your left, will lead you to the Labyrinth in the field. Length of Walk:
To walk the curving path of the Labyrinth will take 45 - 60 minutes depending on your pace. Total distance: 2.5 km. The second mowing of spring 2014 is complete and the Labyrinth path is visible. The grasses will continue to grow. The milkweed
blossom naturally offers a clear definition of the pathway. Milkweed is the only source of food for the caterpillar of the monarch butterfly. The balance of the environment requires the symbiotic relationship between the monarch butterfly and the poisonous milkweed. For more information on the migration of the monarch and the journey that takes a fourth generation butterfly to make it to Ontario.
Gift yourself a time out. We invite you to turn off your cell phones and the buzz of everyday life and come for a walk. The sounds you will clearly hear are those of nature. The sense of calm after a meditative walk - priceless.

Joshua Creek Legacy
Memories of Sybil Rampen
Farm children share memories of hot summer days stoking sheaves of bright yellow grain upright with mice squeaking underfoot, of trekking barefoot through dusty lanes to fetch cows for the evening milking, of splashing in the pond to cool off along with croaking frogs. All so long ago, to be replaced by urban sprawl where children text.

JCHAC Exhibition Rentals
We are presently taking proposals for future exhibitions in the Art Gallery. JCHAC Gallery is the home to ten shows each year with each exhibition running for one month to six weeks. The focus of the Gallery is to be a venue for emerging artists. Should a showing by a single artist seem daunting consider an exhibition of a collective of three or four artists.
We look forward to hearing from you and discussing opportunities. Please contact Bill Hewitt by e-mail or call 905-257-4730.
