"New Signage"  - can even find us on a misty day, by Sybil Rampen

JCHAC Newsletter
June 2014

At last, the weather has taken a turn for the better and spring blooms have arrived.  The gardeners are starting to sow their seeds in the allotment. The lawns are a vivid green and the broken willow tree, which was impacted by the ice storm, has been "re-born".  It seemed "overnight" and the gardens were in bloom, flowers singing in harmony at the delight of much anticipated warm and sunny days. We had guests enjoy the Trillium Walk.  ThLabyrinth has been mowed and is ready for explorers to meander it's continuous path.

Come visit the gallery, explore the gardens and bring your camera.  Enjoy this special oasis.

Evolving Families has great plans for the community garden this year.  They have over 500 plants that have been budding indoors for over two months.  Workshops will soon be announced for all generations to educate the community on the importance of growing your own fruits and vegetables.

Please consider being a volunteer at JCHAC. Among other things, we currently welcome gallery sitters (hours are 1 till 4).  It's as simple as greeting visitors to the exhibition and a chance to relax, enjoy a welcoming cup of tea and savour the surroundings.  No experience necessary. Orientation will be provided.  Anyone with a green thumb who can lend a hand with the gardens would also be very much appreciated.  If interested, please contact: Bill Hewitt

Please join us for Tea Leaf Reading.  We will have afternoon tea parties for up to 10 people with professional tea leaf reader Sarah Adamson at cost of $10 per person.  Bring your friends and enjoy a delightful afternoon of tea and visit to the gallery and gardens.  If interested, please contact Bill Hewitt

Tsochoy Go
, JCHAC Student Artist in Residence exhibited his  wonderful art in the OakvilleTown Hall from May 26th to 30th.  This display was part of an overall Community Living Show. His art continues to evolve using more mediums, including animation.

In May, JCHAC and Evolving Families were honoured to host Rhythm and Technique with world class drummer Amara Kante.  The workshop educated the community on the deep cultural roots of the hand drum from Ghana Africa.  We look forward to inviting Amara again for more community events. Stay tuned for details.

This summer, please come and visit the Gallery, experience a workshop, walk the Labyrinth, try NIA or the drumming circle or just sit on a bench overlooking the ravine and ponder the arrival of the beauty of nature. Joshua Creek Heritage Arts Centre awaits your visit!

CURRENT EXHIBITION
33rd Annual Spring Show
The Artists of Joshua Creek Studio

May 10 - July 6

Watercolour Printmaking with Collage
Roberta Eustace
Each year Joshua Creek invites the talented students of Joshua Creek Studio to share their art and heart of creating by exhibiting in the JCHAC Spring Show. This year, students of Community Living Oakville will also have their art on display.

Twenty years ago a new medium using nontoxic watercolor printmaking was invented at Joshua Creek. Since its inception it has been refined and the technique expanded upon. Artists invent, explore and experiment with wet colour on a rigid surface. Rolling the plate through the press and printing images is only the beginning. The ensuing masterpieces evolve and become treasured pieces of art.

Extraordinary art is created in the dynamic, innovative and inspiring environment of the Studio. We share it with you in our exhibition.

Life Journey
1933 - 2014

Gloria started her art career in Oakville as a fiber artist and over the course of her lifetime and world travels she created a body of work that includes weaving, sculpture, painting, collage, book art, writing, poetry, installations and photography. This show is a retrospective of a lifetime of artistic output.

"As one ages, one tends to reflect more and more on where their journey has taken them and how each segment experienced has taught and prepared them for the next. My work represents the footsteps taken, the lineages followed and passed on and where I stood in the midst of it. What a privilege to have been a part of it all" - Gloria Marshall

Sign In:

You are requested to sign in before you walk. The sign in sheet is located in the Gallery.

Parking:

Please park in the area of the Gallery. To access the Labyrinth follow the lane and cross the bridge.  A path, marked on your left, will lead you to the Labyrinth in the field.

Length of Walk:
To walk the curving path of the Labyrinth will take 45 - 60 minutes depending on your pace. Total distance: 2.5 km.

The second mowing of spring 2014 is complete and the Labyrinth path is visible. The grasses will continue to grow. The milkweed
blossom naturally offers a clear definition of the pathway.  Milkweed is the only source of food for the caterpillar of the monarch butterfly. The balance of the environment requires the symbiotic relationship between the monarch butterfly and the poisonous milkweed. For more information on the migration of the monarch and the journey that takes a fourth generation butterfly to make it to Ontario.

Gift yourself a time out. We invite you to turn off your cell phones and the buzz of everyday life and come for a walk. The sounds you will clearly hear are those of nature. The sense of calm after a meditative walk - priceless.

Joshua Creek Legacy
Memories of Sybil Rampen

In "olden days" barns were cathedrals, the centre of life on the farm.  We had a "bank barn" with a pond for skating at the foot of the dump.

All summer we "hayed" with horse and wagon, and filled it with food for our animals who all had names - Bay, Goldie and Pinto, the naughty pony that we kicked our way to school and who dumped us on the stone road on the way home. There were nests of kittens, a huge rope with a knot hanging from a beam for swinging, ladders to climb into the mow with hay slides to hurtle down. The barns' smells and sounds of cud being chewed are long gone but warm memory remains.

Tea Time at JCHAC

An invitation is extended to interested groups who are  considering looking for a spot to gather and enjoy some "tea time" in a welcoming and engaging atmosphere. Of special interest  are residents in retirement  communities looking for a meaningful and fun outing to this extraordinary land where the city is forgotten and the country feels like coming home.

Gallery

We are presently taking proposals for future exhibitions in the Art Gallery. JCHAC Gallery is the home to ten shows each year with each exhibition running for one month to six weeks. The focus of the Gallery is to be a venue for emerging artists. Should a showing by a single artist seem daunting consider an exhibition of a collective of three or four artists.

We look forward to hearing from you and discussing opportunities. Please contact Bill Hewitt by e-mail or call 905-257-4730.
