Winterfest 2015, Skating on the Pond, by Bill Ellis

JCHAC Newsletter
March 2015

Brrrr....Definitely still cold out there!!  Did I say "cold", I meant "freezing"?   I heard Wiarton Willy said we're in for an early Spring.  Sure hope the little guy is right!!

Talking about the cold temperatures ....we held our 2nd Annual Winterfest on Sunday, February 15th.  It was a wonderful blue sky on one of the coldest days.  As you can see in the above photo, we had a real "trooper" who enjoyed skating on the pond in the beautiful sunshine.

However, most of our guests found solace indoors as they listened to lively music and created art such as healing stones, magic wands, log art and claybake forms. The children, and some of the bigger kids (Adults) enjoyed getting their faces painted by a visiting clown and receiving henna tatoos by some artistic ladies.

Indoors was alive with music and singing by various artists such as Raizelle and local talent Colin Brennan (pictured below) who has the voice of an angel.

Amara Kante, who has lead some of our drum circles, provided drum medleys for a trio of lively belly dancers. Peaches Cardenes, posing below as Isis with Amara Kante, shared hand made wish bracelets. This special group really generated a lot of energy and warmth on a cold winter's day.

A big "Thank You" to all of our guests for attending and for the donors and volunteers who contributed to make this delightful event happen on a cold, wintery day.

VERY EXCITING VIDEO TO WATCH !!!  During our Elder Art show at the end of last year, Francesco Reale created a documentary that looks at three Canadian Artists who have given their lives to practice art in many forms and in different media. Circling around Sybil Rampen and the Joshua Creek Heritage Art Centre, Elder Art looks at maintaining a sense of community, family, and history in this documentary about intersecting lives.  Please click here to hear Sybil speak and view this amazing documentaryElder Art Video

If you haven't seen it yet, our current exhibition is Art from the Heart which runs until March 8th.  From March 13th to April 19th, we will be exhibiting the artwork of Artists of Halton Peel.  Artists have been submitting their entries and we look forward to displaying their work soon. Please see the "Upcoming Exhibitions" segment below and you still have to the end of March 1st to submit a written entry.

In July, we have an exciting 4 day workshop (from the 22nd to 25th) led by Fbio Cembranelli.  Please see "Workshops" segment below for additional details.

As always, please see the various segments below for information on our regular offerings and don't miss Sybil's Joshua Creek Legacy memories.

NOTE: two program changes:

1/ Watercolour Printmaking Workshops on Saturdays (2nd & 3rd) - Children age 12 + are welcome (other ages can be confirmed with the instructor). This is a great opportunity to have a creative day with your children or grandchildren for fun and artistic expression!!  Please see segment below for more details.

Thank you for reading and enjoy March!!

Joshua Creek Legacy
Memories of Sybil Rampen

Grannie Watson, her husband and 8 children emigrated to Trafalgar Township from Ireland over 85 years ago. Isaac died and there was no such thing as social services. The older boys worked on nearby farms, the girls worked as maids. She lived in unheated houses without hydro or water but somehow managed. In 1936, she bought the house on the corner of 7th line and Back Concession for $2000 with help by the kindly manager of the Bank of Montreal. Thus Watsonville, also known as Rabbitville, was born.

One daughter built a house at the end of her garden and another son added a room on the back of the house to make a two family dwelling. Son Bill, blown up in a tank in WW2, limped back and converted the barn into a house where he raised his family of 5. Grannie worked forever, helping in the neighbourhood as well as in the town. She was always calm, cheerful and fun, making  her famous scones and cups of tea. She left 100 descendants: 8 children, 47 grandchildren, and 45 great grandchildren. The little white house stands alone in the middle of the field. Everything else has vanished but her youngest son Dick shares memories and stories of this once thriving farming UEL neighbourhood of which I was a part.

CURRENT EXHIBITION
Art from the Heart

January 30th to March 8th
Opening Tea Party
Sunday February 1st,
2 pm - 5 pm

"Art From The Heart" is a provocative exhibition by artists who have experienced adversity and challenge and have incorporated this into their artistic practice, inspiration and presentation. The show will reach into the community in a unique and compelling way.
Erin Justice, Community Living Oakville
This show focuses on different ways of seeing and experiencing the world, reflected in artwork.  It is about sharing, awareness, artistic expression and courage.  It is about art originating from inner spaces not experienced by most people and about the creativity which emerges from such spaces and experiences. The reality of each life made visible is a powerful tool.

"Art from the Heart" is from the heart.  It emerges from a hand uncluttered by fear, by unrealistic expectations, by lessons imposed by others.  It is allowed to just happen.  Child art, or art by the differently abled, has a powerful impact.  Many artists search to free their child and put their interfering mind to bed. When colour, line and texture have movement on paper, something wonderful happens. Especially, when the artist within is let out.

Amara is one of the world's foremost proponents of the now world-renowned music and dance culture of the Manding people in West Africa. Amara received his calling at the tender age of 7 when he was called to play with the legendary musical group Koteba of Abidjan. We are presently taking proposals for future exhibitions in the Art Gallery. JCHAC Gallery is the home to ten shows each year with each exhibition running for one month to six weeks. The focus of the Gallery is to be a venue for emerging artists. Should a showing by a single artist seem daunting consider an exhibition of a collective of three or four artists.

We look forward to hearing from you and discussing opportunities. Please contact Bill Hewitt by e-mail or call 905-257-4730.
