"Spring by the Pond" by Sybil Rampen

JCHAC Newsletter
May 2014

With great anticipation we are becoming aware of nature as it awakens. There are daily duties that encourage spring's arrival.

Watch for the announcement in the next couple of weeks of a "Trillium  Walk"  to the sacred woods through the meadow. The walk will be held on a Sunday with Sybil hosting a tea after the walk. When in bloom there appears a carpet of red, green/white stripes and white/green striped trilliums in the woods. Bring along your camera.

Connect with Sybil as she shares her task of worm splitting in JCHAC Legacy.

The path of the Labyrinth is once again exposed and ready for explorers to meander it's continuous path. The abundance of the plant of milkweed will be the home to the monarch butterfly as it migrates. Much is in the news of the struggle of the monarch this year and the role of milkweed.

Tsochoy Go,JCHAC Student Artist in Residence will have a display of his art in the Oakville Town Hall in May. His art is evolving using more mediums including animation.

The present exhibition of photography themed "Extreme" closes on Sunday, May 4. There are stunning subject matters that will have you cause to pause and reflect while others will bring a smile as you think of the story the photograph evokes. Come and travel with the "Extreme". Framed entries in the exhibition are for sale.

A drumming workshop is offered in May with master drummer Amara Kante.

Come and visit the Gallery, experience a workshop, walk the Labyrinth or just sit on a bench overlooking the ravine and ponder the arrival of the beauty that is spring. Joshua Creek Heritage Arts Centre awaits your visit!

Happy birthday Sybil!

Warmly,
Joshua Creek Heritage Art Centre

Watercolour Printmaking with Collage
Robertya Eustace

Each year Joshua Creek invites the talented
students of Joshua Creek Studio to share their art and heart of creating by exhibiting in the JCHAC Spring Show. This year the students of Community Living Oakville will also have their art on display.

Twenty years ago a new medium using nontoxic watercolor printmaking was invented at Joshua Creek. Since its inception it has been refined and the technique expanded upon. Artists invent, explore and experiment with wet colour on a rigid surface. Rolling the plate through the press and printing images is only the beginning. The ensuing masterpieces evolve and become treasured pieces of art.

Extraordinary art is created in the dynamic, innovative and inspiring environment of the Studio. We share it with you in our exhibition.

UPCOMING EXHIBITION

Length of Walk:
To walk the curving path of the Labyrinth will take 45 - 60 minutes depending on your pace. Total distance: 2.5 km.

The first mowing of spring 2014 is complete and the Labyrinth path is visible. The grasses will continue to grow and the milkweed
blossom offering a clear definition of the pathway.
Milkweed is the only source of food for the caterpillar of the monarch butterfly. The balance of the environment requires the symbiotic relationship between the monarch butterfly and the poisonous milkweed. For more information on the migration of the monarch and the journey that takes a fourth generation butterfly to make it to Ontario.

Gift yourself a time out. We invite you to turn off your cell phones and the buzz of everyday life and come for a walk. The sounds you will clearly hear are those of nature. The sense of calm after a meditative walk - priceless.

Joshua Creek Legacy
Memories of Sybil Rampen

Sybil Rampen

In spring our  neighbourhood of United Empire Loyalist farmers focused on weather and repairing farm equipment. There was an unmentioned competition as to who would seed what, when, and first. My father, known for his eccentricity was outside the box with a Graham plough that tickled the surface and a buck rake that backed up on the hay. When he ploughed between the grapes with a horse, my brother and I would follow, cutting worms in two to increase the population. We were told that both ends lived. On Sundays we would go to Blood Root Valley for a picnic, to pick wildflowers and play in the 16 Mile Creek.

Tea Time at JCHAC

An invitation is extended to interested groups who are  considering looking for a spot to gather and enjoy some "tea time" in a welcoming and engaging atmosphere. Of special interest  are residents in retirement  communities looking for a meaningful and fun outing to this extraordinary land where the city is forgotten and the country feels like coming home.

Gallery

We are presently taking proposals for future exhibitions in the Art Gallery. JCHAC Gallery is the home to ten shows each year with each exhibition running for one month to six weeks. The focus of the Gallery is to be a venue for emerging artists. Should a showing by a single artist seem daunting consider an exhibition of a collective of three or four artists.

We look forward to hearing from you and discussing opportunities. Please contact Bill Hewitt by e-mail or call 905-257-4730.
