October rose at JCHAC, by Janet Jansson

JCHAC Newsletter
November 2014

Can you believe it?  Beautiful roses in the garden in late October.  We've been fortunate enough to continue to enjoy some fabulous weather.  We'll take it while we can get it, that's for sure.  Today there's been a little spattering of snowflakes -  a little sign that November has arrived. Each month brings us a fresh start and a thought that we are truly blessed to have different seasons adding variety to our lives.

As we approach the holiday season, perhaps give some thought to our various programs, which would make great gifts.  If you are in the planning stages, perhaps there is someone on your gift list who would enjoy attending a Watercolour Printmaking Workshop, a photography class (see bottom of this segment for more details) or one of the Health & Wellness programs outlined below.  If so, please click here to contact Bill Hewitt.  You could start your shopping early and check a name or two off your list.

Labyrinth in October
The Labyrinth at JCHAC continues to provide pleasure for active participants.  We had a visitor from England who claimed it to be "world class". Evidently, it takes years of diligence to create such a magnificent natural spread.

Evolving Families' first time planting garlic in October at JCHAC was a magical experience. Families came with their children and enjoyed an evening of  planting two full rows of over 200 garlic, covered in hay to keep warm for the winter! We are looking forward to the harvest next season. Master Drummer Amara Kante will lead the Drum Circle again in November.  Please see the segment below for more details and about KOURABA 2014

The Grannies exhibit had much success with guests having a giggle and being inspired by the enthusiasm and merriment of the Grannies as they prepared for a photo shoot for Sybil's fabulous book.  DVD's books are still available and would make wonderful holiday gifts.

We currently have a new exhibition entitled "Celebrate the Seven" by the Connections Fibre Artists with an opening reception on November 2nd.  In December, the Elder Art

show will open.

In January, Bill Ellis, will be instructing another of his very successful Photography Workshops. What a wonderful gift for someone who might be getting a new camera for Christmas or is still trying to figure-out their old one, gift cards are available. For more information click here, Photography Workshop.

Thank you for reading.  Enjoy November !!

Memories of Sybil Rampen

Long ago when Burnhamthorpe Rd was called the "Back Concession", huge winter blizzards would clog it for weeks.  To reach the 7th Line, horses and sleighs would cross my father's fields. Our one room was closed so Betty Post and I used to play and dig houses in the huge drifts that piled across the road. When spring came we would take a shovel and let the water off the giant puddles into the ditch.  Between the 8 party line telephone, and the close-knit community, it was a snug way of life with neighbours helping neighbours. Entertainment was visiting, story telling, with euchre parties and square dancing at the Township Hall. It was a time of kindness and sharing.

CURRENT EXHIBITION
Connections Fibre Arts
"Celebrate the Seven"

October 31st to November 30th
Opening Tea Party
Sunday November 2nd, 2 pm - 5 pm
Fibre Art Collaboration based on
The Tangled Garden, by J.E.H. MacDonald

The art of The Group Of Seven is the central theme of this exhibition. The members of Connections Fibre Artists accepted the challenge to design and execute their own original art that reflects their individual research into the artists, the paintings and the styles of the Group of Seven.

The result is an exciting and intriguing exhibition celebrating the approach that Tom Thompson, Lawren Harris, A.Y. Jackson, J.E.H. MacDonald, F.A. Farley, Frank Johnston, Arthur Lismer and Franklin Carmichael took to develop an original Canadian art.

One of the artists whose work is in this exhibition is the late John Willard, who recently had a 40 year retrospective at the Art Gallery of Burlington.

It is a show not to be missed!!

UPCOMING EXHIBITION
Elder Art,
The Youth of Yesterday

December 5th to January 25th
Opening Tea Party
Sunday December 7th, 2 pm - 5 pm

The mandate of JCHAC is to reach out into the community.  With Elder Art we will not only curate and hang the work of older artists who have had successful careers as artists, we pay homage with their stories.  This final exhibition of the year showcases the artwork of 4 wonderful artists, between the ages of 82 and 93, who are still creating.  What an inspiration!!

Please come see the art of Inez Demuynck, Gisela Sommer, Shirley Erskine and Sybil Rampen.

Laughter Yoga is the happiest wellness program ever! It is a joyful way to connect with others at any age or any fitness level. It can be performed gently or moving throughout the room with full energy and enthusiasm! Studies by the National Institute of Health and various medical schools have proven the effectiveness of laugher yoga for mental alertness, pain relief & increased immune system function. This unique exercise routine that combines group laughter exercises with yoga breathing allows anyone to laugh without using jokes, humor or comedies.

It's been scientifically proven that the brain can't tell the difference between fake and real laughter so it is okay to fake it until it becomes real. Trust us...that won't take long!

Gallery

We are presently taking proposals for future exhibitions in the Art Gallery. JCHAC Gallery is the home to ten shows each year with each exhibition running for one month to six weeks. The focus of the Gallery is to be a venue for emerging artists. Should a showing by a single artist seem daunting consider an exhibition of a collective of three or four artists.

We look forward to hearing from you and discussing opportunities. Please contact Bill Hewitt by e-mail or call 905-257-4730.
