September Garden at JCHAC, by Sybil Rampen

JCHAC Newsletter
October 2014

Wow!!  Have you been enjoying this wonderful blitz of summer this past month?  The days have been getting shorter but the warm air and sunny days certainly helps to put a bounce in our steps.

As we head into the fall, perhaps it's time to try some new things that will inspire you, tickle you with laughter and happiness, put a bounce in your step.  JCHAC has a lot to offer with the continuation of Nia, Drum Circle and newly added Laughter Yoga as well as Exhibitions, Watercolour Printmaking classes, Special Interest groups and "tomorrow" - garlic planting. The Labryinth is still open and is beautiful this time of year.

I've made a bit of a change in the newsletter this month where you'll see major groupings such as:
  • Exhibitions - Current and Upcoming
  • Art Workshops
  • Health & Wellness Programs
  • Evolving Families Programs
  • Special Interest
  • Friends of Joshua Creek
  • JCHAC Rentals
"In This Issue", which is to the right of this block, provides you with a "click" feature that takes you directly to the programs of interest.  Please see below for more details on these events.

Evolving Families is doing a special planting of Canadian garlic on Thursday, October 2nd, from 6:30pm to 8:00pm and invites you and your family to join them and reap the benefits of planting your own garlic.

Click to the right (Planting Canadian Garlic), or scroll below for more details.

Newly introduced this past month was Laughter Yoga which proved to be a load of fun for participants.  Sessions will continue the 1st and 3rd Mondays of each month.  Please join us and add some "laughter" to your day.  Details below.

The Drum Circle had a special event in September featuring Master Drummer Amara Kante.  Amara will be joining Evolving families again this month as they present the pre-launch of KOURABA 2014!  "A Celebration Of Life With Drums".  Please see the segment below for more details about this exciting event.

In the Special Interest segment below, you will find details on the Flying Pigs Arts & Letter Society and the Oakville Stitchery Guild. These are two groups who meet once per month at JCHAC and share common interests.  Attendees share knowledge and learn from each other as well as invited specialists who offer workshops and lectures.

The Tea Leaf Reading sessions with Sarah Adamson have continued to prove to be popular with October through December sessions filled. Keep posted for future dates starting in January.

Watercolour Printmaking art workshops have started up again and continue to be a vital component of JCHAC.  Mary Rischke provides wonderful guidance and instruction to anyone who is interested in learning this technique, on Wednesdays and also the 2nd and 3rd Saturdays of each month.  For details, please see below and contact Mary if you are interested in trying watercolour printmaking.  The Saturday workshops are a great way to experiment and learn, or enhance your current skill. For added fun, bring along some friends.

If you haven't seen Methuselah & Her Motorcycle Gang, please drop by the gallery.  It is a wonderful show and "the Grannies" DVD should not be missed.  It's hilarious and inspiring. Betts Engall, one of "the Grannies", is featured in a special art show at Sheridan College until October 3rd.  That show was carefully created by Sybil Rampen in conjunction with the Gerontology Program and shares Betts' art through her journey with alzheimers.

Exhibitions that are soon to come:  the Connections Fibre Arts' "Celebrate the Seven" in November and Elder Art, the Youth of Yesterday in December.

Sybil Rampen's Joshua Creek Legacy has been moved and follows right after this segment.

Happy October and Happy Thanksgiving!!

Warmly,
Janet Jansson, Newsletter Editor

Memories of Sybil Rampen

When I was in Paris in 1951 my father began to write poetry. He explained that he would get up extra early, feed the cattle, stoke the stoves in the brooder houses for the baby chicks, and then sit down in the barn in the perfect quiet of the morning. He would empty his mind to allow thoughts to find their way on his paper.

One particular poem that has puzzled me ever since has three lines....

"Anger forces action

Fear shrinks the heart

Love steals life"

CURRENT EXHIBITION
Methuselah & Her Motorcycle Gang

September 6th to October 26th

This exhibition is a collection of art from a varied group of artists, with work ranging from paintings to fibre art.  All  were friends who became part of "The Grannies", a book written by Sybil Rampen. This book is about old ladies in a retirement home who become a motorcycle gang.

The book was featured in Chapters' book store as well as on radio stations and the Mike Bullard show.  It reminds us that there are no limitations, that we can continue to pursue our passion and follow our dreams, no matter our age.

"The Grannies" book starts out "Once there was a bunch of old women who lived in a Home and got fed up with being leftovers.  Over a cup of tea, they discussed the problem and decided they just had to do something.  Methusela said "After all, we aren't dead yet". And they all agreed".

Thirteen years later,  Betty Neil, who is Methuselah in the book, sadly passed away on July 9, 2014.  In 2012, Betts Engall, who is half of the twins "Double Trouble", also passed away. Sybil, Founder of Joshua Creek Heritage Art Centre, and a dear friend of Betty and Betts, wanted to pay tribute with an exhibition of all of the Hell's Grannies' works of art as all the "Grannies" were artists. This exhibition is dedicated to Betty Neil's memory, she was 96.

UPCOMING EXHIBITIONS
Connections Fibrearts
"Celebrate the Seven"

October 31st to
November 30th
Opening Tea Party
Sunday November 2nd, 2 pm - 5 pm

The art of The Group Of Seven is the central theme of this exhibition. The members of Connections Fibre Artists accepted the challenge to design and execute their own original art that reflects their individual research into the artists, the paintings and the styles of the Group of Seven.

The result is an exciting and intriguing exhibition celebrating the approach that Tom Thompson, Lawren Harris, A.Y. Jackson, J.E.H. MacDonald, F.A. Farley, Frank Johnston, Arthur Lismer and Franklin Carmichael took to develop an original Canadian art.

Elder Art,
The Youth of Yesterday

December 5th to January 11th
Opening Tea Party
Sunday December 7th, 2 pm - 5 pm

The mandate of JCHAC is to reach out into the community.  For three years we have exhibited Art From the Heart, the amazing work of differently abled artists.  Now, with Elder Art we will not only curate and hang the work of older artists who have had successful careers as artists, we pay homage with their stories.

Laughter Yoga is the happiest wellness program ever! It is a joyful way to connect with others at any age or any fitness level. It can be performed gently or moving throughout the room with full energy and enthusiasm! Studies by the National Institute of Health and various medical schools have proven the effectiveness of laugher yoga for mental alertness, pain relief & increased immune system function. This unique exercise routine that combines group laughter exercises with yoga breathing allows anyone to laugh without using jokes, humor or comedies.

It's been scientifically proven that the brain can't tell the difference between fake and real laughter so it is okay to fake it until it becomes real. Trust us...that won't take long!

Invite your family, friends and colleagues to this pre-launch of "KOURABA"  2014  (click here for more details...http://www.kouraba.org). BRIEF HISTORY

Kouraba means "sacred forest" or "enchanted forest" in the Malink culture of Guinea, West Africa.  The Kouraba ceremony originated in the village of Baro, Hamana Gberedu.  This "sacred forest" is typically located near a flowing body of water.  Many till this day continue to visit a Kouraba to make prayer requests believing that their supplications will be granted.

All are welcome in true intergenerational and full family community style.

We are presently taking proposals for future exhibitions in the Art Gallery. JCHAC Gallery is the home to ten shows each year with each exhibition running for one month to six weeks. The focus of the Gallery is to be a venue for emerging artists. Should a showing by a single artist seem daunting consider an exhibition of a collective of three or four artists.
