Our partner in Lafayette, the chamber of commerce, has been destroyed by a fire last week (see President's message and article below). This is an opportunity for all of us to review our insurance policies and recovery procedures. Chamber members and SCORE counselors can help assess your risk, contact us at info@orindachamber.org if you need support.

Several great and useful events are on the calendar this summer, take a look below.

The city has approved the coming of food trucks downtown Orinda. Let's work together to make it the best experience possible for Orindans as well as local businesses.

Lafayette Chamber already on the mend.

Here is what's left of the Lafayette chamber and surrounding businesses, such as La Finestra:

During the night of July 12 to 13 the building at 100 Lafayette Circle that housed the restaurant La Finestra, the Lafayette Chamber of Commerce, Suite 102 Hair Designs, and several service providers such as CPA Colin & Associates was completely destroyed by fire.

An out-pour of support went to the Lafayette chamber; Jay Lifson its CEO and his team have been a very active presence in Lafayette for years. Lifson indicated that the chamber was offered a portable unit by the Lafayette school district to set up an office. He added that all the notes and documents he had been collecting over the years had gone into flame, but that his team members were able to pull of lot of data off the cloud. The chamber is getting quotes to replace its equipment.

The silver lining for Lifson is the way the community has rallied to help and support the chamber and he said he wanted to honor that. When the team moves into the portable unit, members will have a wish list that this chamber will post online. Lifson added that both the chamber and La Finestra have good insurance coverage. The restaurant has reached out to businesses that needed employees so its staff could continue working.

Lifson said that this incident will be an opportunity for him and his team to reinvent themselves and do things a little differently. He added that those who want to help can join the chamber of commerce!

News from the city: Food trucks in Orinda this summer.

The city recently approved the coming of food trucks in front of the Community Center on Thursday evenings.
Seven food trucks from Taste of the World will park from 5 to 9 p.m. each Thursday from August 5 to October 19.
A beer and wine truck will be part of the group. Live music will play on the library plaza where tables will be provided. The city's objective is to provide more family-friendly venues this summer.

The Orinda chamber supports the idea of the food truck and urges retail on that side of town to stay opened. However, we are asking restaurants to monitor their patronage on Thursday night. The city will evaluate the program at the end of October and the chamber needs to be able to report on the impact of the food trucks on existing businesses. Thank you for your cooperation!

President's Corner

This week the building housing the Lafayette Chamber of Commerce, La Finestra restaurant, and a number of other businesses burned to the ground. First thoughts were thankfulness that no one was hurt but reality for the business owners suddenly became stark, bleak, and all-consuming with their life's future much in doubt. The Lamorinda community is rallying to help because that is what we do for each other; but, it is perhaps a good time to reflect on what you personally could do to prepare for such an event and what perspective it might lend to shaping your life's priorities.
