August 15, 2017

Over the summer your chamber has been working at preparing the inaugural Orinda Senior Health and Wellness Fair. This event is not your average senior fair: we will talk about taking control of one's life, learning, updating and improving skills, taking risks, building confidence with our keynote speaker Patrick Arbore. We will practice yoga, get a massage, taste healthy food, talk about the impact of nutrition, exercise, and alternative medicines. In fact, you don't have to be a senior to attend. It is a free event opened to all. Chamber members are encouraged to have a table at the event. It is not too late: contact us at [email protected]. This event is supported by the City of Orinda, the Orinda Association, the Orinda Community Foundation, Lamorinda Village, the Orinda Care Center and IndeeLift.

Our Orinda restaurants are finalizing the first Dine Out Orinda program. Stay tuned for more details.

White Pony Express needs you to help deliver food to those most in need

Due to an increase of food donations, White Pony Express (WPE), is urgently seeking volunteers who will happily sacrifice their own time to help families and individuals in need:

  •       Use our vehicles to pick up food rescued from supermarkets, restaurants and farmers markets and deliver it to nonprofits who feed the hungry in our community; or
  •       Accompany drivers to help load and unload at donor or recipient locations (need to be able to lift 30 lbs.)

Volunteers should be willing to commit to driving or helping on a regular basis (weekly or bi-weekly) for periods of two-four hours (or as much as you can fit in).

WPE, whose mission is to eliminate hunger and poverty in Contra Costa County, currently rescues about 5000 pounds of food each day.  In just over 3 1/2 years, WPE has rescued and delivered 5 million pounds of food. This is fresh, high-quality food (meats, dairy, produce, deli, and baked goods) that, if not rescued, would go to the landfill and create more methane gas.

You can have a direct, immediate impact on the lives of the thousands of those suffering from hunger in our community.

If you are interested, please Contact Mandy Nakaya: 925-818-6361;  [email protected] ; or go to www.whiteponyexpress.org/volunteer

President's Corner

It would be amazing if anyone is surprised by the solar eclipse coming up on Monday the 21st given the volume of media coverage. But, that would just be reality sneaking up on us once more. Reality is also summer coming to an end, schoolrooms awakening after an extended siesta, and commutes returning to a new normal, i.e. even worse. Fortunately there is lots happening after Labor Day with the Orinda Car Show and the California Independent Film Festival in mid-September and the weekend long celebration of the Year of the Czech at the end of the month. Enjoy!
