President's Message
Hello Fellow Certified Surgical Technologists and Certified First Assistants!

2017 was full of excitement for the PA-AST. It seems as if the year moved quickly. I truly believe it was due to the changes and hurdles we were able to overcome.    As you know we were successful with introducing legislation in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives! If you haven't already done so please take some time to read the bill. House Bill 1805 (HB1805) recommends education and competency standards for new surgical technologists entering the profession and would require hospitals (going forward) to employ surgical techs who: (1) graduate from an accredited surgical technology program and (2) earn and maintain the Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) credential from the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA). Pennsylvania House Bill 1805, sponsored by Representative Judy Ward

As we progress in the legislative efforts we will notify all of you with updates via emails, newsletters and at our spring and fall meetings. While we have moved forward there is still work to be done.   We will begin our grassroots campaign in 2018! Our membership will be out in full force contacting legislators to bring them our message!

I hope to see all of you at the spring meeting in Lancaster or soaking up some rays at the AST National Conference in Orlando! Keep pressing forward.     Together we can accomplish great things! Here's to the best 2018 can bring! As one of my fellow board member says #PA-AST or Bust!

Best Regards,

Jennifer Peterson CST, FAST
