Hatch to Chair PROMESA
Economic Development Task Force
The chairman of the U.S. Senate Finance Committee, Orrin Hatch, will preside over the Puerto Rico economic development "task force" formed under the Puerto Rico Oversight, Management and Economic Stability Act (PROMESA). Sen. Hatch (R-Utah) was named to the task force by House Speaker Paul Ryan and will be the leader of the group composed of eight members, according to a CyberNews report. The group will work on the recommendations for economic development and function apart from the fi scal control board also legislated under PROMESA.
With the naming of the president of the task force in recent days, its work will formally begin, said Resident Commissioner Pedro Pierluisi. Hatch is one of the members of Congress who has been close to Puerto Rico's economic debt struggles and even traveled to Puerto Rico while the law that imposes a federal fiscal control board was being drafted. The veteran Republican senator was also one who insistently requested audited financial statements from the government of Puerto Rico to understand the actual state of the island's public debt, which has been estimated at $70 billion. Then, after the approval of PROMESA, the senator has been insistent in asking Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew the implications of the alleged "agreement of confidentiality" between the federal and local governments. In spite of his criticism of the legislative process for PROMESA and the Puerto Rico's tardiness in disclosing economic information, Hatch voted in favor of the law.
Meanwhile, the economic development task force formed under PROMESA is in charge of conducting investigations and making recommendations on economic growth measures, the impact of parity in federal health programs on the island and the state of child poverty, among other subjects defined in the law. Along with Hatch, the members of the group that will be active in the next six months are: Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), Rep. Sean Duff y (R-Wisc.), Rep. Tom MacArthur (R-N.J.), Sen. Robert Menéndez (R-N.J.), Sen. Bill Nelson (R-Fla.), Rep. Nydia Velázquez (D-N.Y.) and Puerto Rico Resident
Commissioner Pedro Pierluisi.
