October, 2015

Dear Nia Community,

It's a clear, gorgeous October Sunday evening. The maple trees are dropping leaves and spinning down their samara seeds (known as 'helicopters' or 'whirly birds') while pine trees have shed a carpet of needles on our walkways. The colors of fall are everywhere and decorating Blue Heron Ranch. With recent rains, the pastures are green and lush again and the cool crisp air is invigorating! The animals, both domesticated and wild, seem energized as their senses tell them that fall's stunning and brief doorway into winter is surely a time to gather, grow shiny thick new coats and celebrate!

Two nights ago, my niece, Jada and I walked through a foggy October mist to let in the horses.  All in a minute, a great horned called down from the top of a fir tree as if to ask, "Who, who-who-who are you two?". Then we both spotted the grey streak of a wild bunny racing across the horse pasture as a skunk-filled breeze caught our noses. Wildlife is everywhere here on the edge of the woods, to remind us of our own animal bodies and ancient spirits and how great it is to be wildly alive dancing through life!

The Nia White Belt Training
with Nia Faculty Trainer, Randee Fox  at Blue Heron Ranch Moving Arts, Sammamish, Washington

"The Nia class can be like snorkeling on a beautiful reef - we enjoy being on the surface of the water, diving deep sometimes but only for brief moments. In the Nia White Belt Training we put on on full scuba diving gear and get to dive deep for longer periods of time in an extraordinarily enchanting and sensual world of music, movement and magic. If you enjoy the Nia class, you will LOVE the Nia White Belt Training."

-- Randee Fox, Nia Faculty Trainer

Nia White Belt Training takes you on a journey of self-discovery by exploring the art of sensation. Beginning with the Joy of Movement, you learn 13 principles for body-centered awareness. Each principle teaches you a variety of somatic skills for connecting to physical sensation in your body. Through the science, craft and art of sensation, you will learn Nia's body-centered approach to health, wellness and fitness. Crafting with sensation is the starting point for all Nia teachers. The Art of Sensation is what brings magic to the Nia class experience.

Break free!
The new FreeDance Class

In August I became trained to facilitate the Nia FreeDance class - a new class format based in White Belt Principle 4, FreeDance - stimulating movement creativity.

Though guiding FreeDance it is one of my absolute favorite sessions of the Nia White Belt Training, this training was very different and it added to my practice - as Nia Educator and practitioner on a very deep level!

I came back to my classes and noticed immediate changes in areas that had 'broken free' in my body and in my teaching capacity even as I taught traditional Nia choreography. My ability to 'multitask', vocal and body cue better and consciously create new choreography "seeing" choreographic patterns before I danced them. I love the sensation of freedom that I am having as a Nia teacher and Trainer from this immersion into FreeDance.

I think that FreeDance is truly the foundation by which Nia was built and I am looking forward to sharing this class with you.

What Debbie Rosas, co-creator and founder of The Nia Technique, says about FreeDance:
"Nia FreeDance is a fitness practice you never have to talk yourself into doing; it feeds your mind and body's appetite for discovery, expression, spontaneity and improvisation. With regular practice, you will naturally begin to tune into the uniqueness of each moment and find yourself more "in" your body, connected to life through your body.

FreeDance ignites your desire to learn more about who you are - and who you can be - by encouraging you to move differently, listen to music more intimately and deeply connect to your emotions. The practice expands your movement choices, helping you break rigid or repetitive movement habits and inspires you to express yourself in more dynamic ways.

FreeDance allows you to move without "editing," without interfering with your natural movements, bringing your unconscious creative self to the surface. This is the Sacred Artist, the one who has access to a movement palette filled with possibilities, poured onto a canvas of creativity where magic happens again and again."

Stay tuned for my FreeDance Class launch coming soon!
Special thanks to our team of skilled east side NiaSeattle teachers - Betty Lai, Heather Riley, Jill Klenota, Karla Steele Siebe, Pauline Osborne, Sarah Love, Sue Campbell, Susan Creighton, Veronica Connolly-Bagshaw and Vicci Kane for teaching your classes and covering my classes when needed. Thanks to you, east side NiaSeattle students rarely miss a scheduled class.

More thanks to our entire NiaSeattle community of teachers who teach and cover classes all over the greater Puget Sound Region. I am very proud to be a member of such a strong and aligned community.

For those of you who have made it your health ritual to come to my classes, you ROCK my world every day and I never take you for granted. Thank you for the effort you make to show up, for your presence, your creativity, your willingness to share your dance and your warm, open smiles.

See you on the dance floor!

The Joy of dancing with community

"The cords of connection go very deep on the dance floor and continue long after the class. The creative Human Soul is nourished, dancing with community, and longs to return for more. As we become more relaxed in our dance, the cords become 'chords' sung through our tuning fork-like bodies allowing us to 'right' our tone, release energetic buildup and return our bodies and lives to harmony - daily."
