"Justified by faith"

Luke 18:9-14

Two people came to church one day to pray.

Because it was his tradition, the first entered the nave and stood to pray.

"You have blessed me and my family with many good things. I, in turn, have met the letter of the law each day, did everything it has commanded, thus, the reason for such blessings." He smiled at himself as he left the church, with his head held high, so high he didn't notice the other person walking into the narthex, literally knocking him down in the process.

The other person, whose habits rarely brought him to church, got up, brushed himself off, and entered the nave, knelt at the altar, with his head in shame, all but too ashamed to lift his eyes to the altar. He cried "I'm a no good sinner! Can you find it in your heart to forgive me, Lord, even for things I do over and over again?"

As we move into the week that leads up to Reformation Sunday, ask yourself: "How do God's children get to heaven?"

Is it based only on the following of the law and nothing else?

Or, is it based on an imperfect faith?

Is it based on the honest pride of doing good things?

Or, is it in the humility of each day's self examination?

Is it about just focusing on those who love you?

Or, is it about focusing on those who may not regard you as equal (and vice versa)?

In this Sunday's Gospel, the answer to the question is, "To get into heaven" one only needs to have faith in Jesus, deficient trust as it may be!"

You are imperfect, but you are loved.

By faith, you ARE saved.

God does love you, and so do we!
