Principal's Message
Dear Noddin Community,
Welcome to the new online version of the Noddin Newsletter!  In an effort to tighten up communication and save paper, I will be sending newsletters electronically to e-mails we have on file or provided to me by your child’s teacher.  A small number of paper copies will also be available in the front office.  Additionally, it will be posted on our school website.

We are now into our 5th week of the school year and I could not be more proud of the students and staff!  Teachers immediately dove into the curriculum and I have seen overwhelming evidence of effective classroom instruction and student learning.  Next week, our RtI (Reading Groups) program will begin.  Additionally, many programs have begun, or will soon, such as Music, P.E., and Library time.  This year, all students K-5 will receive music instruction and every grade 1st – 5th will receive a weekly P.E. class via our Recess 101 program.  Recess 101 will also be providing structured sports and games during both recess and lunchtime.  If you see him around campus, please say “hello” and welcome our amazing Recess 101 coach, Coach Ernesto!

Running Club is another lunchtime program that will be beginning soon twice a week!  Thank you Kelly Sayer for running this popular student activity!
Thank you to Ashleigh Coffeng, Rachel Duncan, and the entire Home & School Club board for the Welcome Back Coffee on the first day of school, New Parent Presentation at Back to School Night, and for supporting the teachers, students, and community in a multitude of ways!  Noddin values your hard work and efforts to make Noddin welcoming and the best it can be!

Another big “thank you” to Tom Graham and his beatification team!  Tom and his crew have given up two Saturdays to beautify, paint, and do maintenance here on campus!  The community and I are so appreciative for what has been done.

Our Traffic and Safety Coordinator, Jennifer Wickland, has been instrumental to Noddin this year, leading the effort to have Noddin become part of the City of San Jose’s Walk and Roll program!  Currently, Mrs. Wickland and the teachers are gathering student travel data, which will be used to analyze our safety needs.  We’ll be encouraging students and parents to walk, bike, or scoot to school, and continue to track numbers and patterns.  Students will also be eligible to win prizes for their efforts!  More information will be coming regarding this program in the near future.  In the meantime, students will receive a safety assembly and we have our Bike Safety Rodeo on Saturday, September 24!

Our Back to School Night was extremely well attended.  Whether you are a new or returning family, we hope the evening was inviting and informative!  Please know how much Noddin values the partnership between school and home. My door is always open to your thoughts, comments, suggestions, and concerns.

Superintendent's Message
September Superintendent’s Message

The 2016-2017 school year began with a with a burst of enthusiasm as our teachers, administrators, and classified staff came together the Monday before school started to welcome in the new school year.  We celebrated successes of the past, welcomed new members of the USD Family, and aligned our vision for the start of the school year.  As a team, we are dedicated to supporting the success of every child in our care.

A great deal of work goes into the opening of school.  Our deepest gratitude is extended to the following staff for their outstanding efforts to make the first day of school a successful one:

  • Classified staff at the school sites ensured that campuses were well-maintained, cleaned, and that organizational details were covered (i.e. supplies, class lists, enrollment).

  • Teachers at each of the sites prepared their lesson plans, organized their resources, and decorated their classrooms.

  • Site administrators finalized schedules, began calendaring school events, and prepared welcome back activities for staff and students.

  • District office staff worked behind the scenes to ensure each school received necessary resources and supports.  The business office staff processed purchase orders, payments, and payroll.  Our human resource department hired over 35 teachers and 12 classified staff to ensure all sites had appropriate staffing.  The maintenance and operations department ensured facilities were safe, operational, and that summer repairs were completed. Our educational services department and technology department worked to ensure that our educators had the training, the curriculum, and the technology to begin teaching on day one.

The Board of Trustees and I are proud of the herculean efforts of every USD staff member to prepare for a smooth start of the school year.  We are also proud of the results of the Smarter Balanced Assessment that were made public the last week of August.  Below is a chart with the results of the assessment that was given in spring of 2016.

The combined efforts of our dedicated staff in Union School District have contributed to the successful start of the new year and the continued success of our children.  We look forward to another banner year!

Annual Notice of Physical Education

Union School District strives to provide the highest quality educational experience for our students. Included in that is a high quality physical education (P.E.) program in our elementary schools. California Education Code governs how much PE is taught in each classroom. As per California Education Code 51210(g), first through sixth grade teachers are required to teach 200 minutes of physical education over 10 instructional days. It is at the discretion of the classroom teacher as to how and when these minutes are distributed over this time frame. We are providing this notice to inform parents/guardians that, if they have questions regarding P.E. minutes, they should first contact their child’s teacher or principal. If they are not satisfied with the school’s response, they may contact the Director of Educational Services. If there is an interest in filing a formal complaint with the district regarding P.E. minutes of instruction, parents are to use the District’s Uniform Complaint Procedures. Forms are available at each school, the District Office and on the web site. We in Union School District encourage a well-rounded educational experience, and physical education is a strong component of that experience.
