January 5, 2018

Happy New Year! I pray that God has already been blessing you in this new year and I am looking forward to serving and worshiping with you here in 2018. Speaking of worship, many of you have commented to me or to our staff how much you enjoyed the Christmas season and the opportunity to worship together. Your comments have not fallen on deaf ears. In fact, many of you have mentioned to me several times over the past year and a half how much you love being in worship all together and we have that opportunity before us. One of the greatest things our church does is community outreach and part of that is our Upward Basketball and Cheerleading Program. Many kids and their families are here in our Family Life Center two and three times a week starting January 13th and it is a great ministry. A logistic issue occurred last year with tear down and set up every week for the two months we offer this ministry. So it has been decided by Trustees and Finance (as there is cost involved in this process) to worship all together in the sanctuary which will bring us together as the body of Christ as well as save time, money, utilities, and wear and tear on the FLC. Yes, it will be a combination of music styles, but we are not calling it blended - just worship! That is why we were created in the first place - to worship the Lord and to do so, as it says in Psalm 150, with praise in His sanctuary and with all kinds of music. Starting January 14th we will begin one worship together (The Hispanic worship service will still meet in the chapel each Sunday except on special combined services) and we will celebrate Holy Communion that Sunday as we are united through Christ. I am excited about this new worship together and I hope you will join me in prayer as we seek God's guidance in this and in all things pertaining to His church. If you have any questions or comments please set up a time and come see me. It is my honor and joy and privilege to serve and worship with you.
In Christ alone,
Pastor Eddie

Dear Norcross First Congregation,
My heart is filled with profound gratitude for the privilege of having led traditional worship at Norcross First these past eight years, first as associate, and for the last five years as your Minister of Music. It has been my great joy to lead every aspect of our Music Ministry from children through senior adults as we have sung, played and worshipped together.  I have been blessed by the committed and gifted people who volunteer in all facets of the Music Ministry as participants and leaders.
There is a "feeling", intangible, set in motion each week as the people of God raise their corporate voice in song.  Always, I am moved as I hear the choir and congregation sing the great hymns of the church.  As we enter the Sanctuary each week, there is an unspoken recognition that, indeed, here is our grounding and our stability in this crazed and changing world.  This forged faith is expressed, most often, in corporate song.  It is my prayer that God is worshipped in spirit and truth through every musical offering, with hearts, hands and voice open to the great I Am.
After much prayer and thoughtful consideration, I have chosen to retire from full time Music Ministry and my position here at Norcross First United Methodist Church.  This decision has been difficult, yet exciting; tearful, yet expectant, as I wait for God's continued purpose for me; regretful, as I leave people whom I have grown to love very much and, yet, confident that God  walks ahead of us all as we enter  a new season of our lives.  My final Sunday with you will be January 21. My prayers will continue for this wonderful church as you seek to bring God's kingdom on earth.  I thank God in all my remembrance of you.
With love and gratitude,
Jane Martin

Stephen Ministry
Sometimes we just need someone to listen. Stephen Ministers are lay members of the congregation who have received over 50 hours of training in how to listen empathetically, non-judgmentally, and
most important, lovingly with the heart of Christ. We all go through so many changes and situations in our lifetime: retirement, involuntary job loss, death of a family member, diagnosis of a serious illness, depression. And often during those times we don't need or want someone telling us what to do, but to
hear us as we talk about how these situations have affected us, wounded us, changed us, or even provided new opportunities. If you feel that you could use a friend to care and to listen, to encourage, and pray with you and for you (at your request), please know that we are available for you. For more information, contact  Rev. Brenda Westmoreland -  bwestmoreland2583@att.net  or Murlene Dubay at  770-449-1478 .

Upcoming Winter Studies
Wonderstruck by Margaret Feinberg (Women's Study)
led by Debbie Adams- 7 week study.
Do you ever feel like you're going through the motions of faith? Sometimes we do and say the right things, but our hearts are far from God. We lose our sense of holy awe. In Wonderstruck, Margaret Feinberg invites you to toss back the covers, climb out of bed, and drink in the fullness of life God intended.
You Are What You Love by James K. A. Smith
led by Mickey Stanfield- 7 week study.
Who and what we worship fundamentally shape our hearts. We may not realize, however, the ways our hearts are taught to love rival gods instead of the One for whom we were made. And while we desire to shape culture, we are not often aware of how culture shapes us. In You Are What You Love, popular speaker and
award-winning author James K. A. Smith helps us recognize the formative power of culture and the
transformative possibilities of Christian practices.  This is a book study and the book can be purchased through Amazon.com.
The Wesley Class Meeting
led by John Hammer- On Going
A Wesleyan small group will knock your spiritual socks off. It grows faith through sharing what God is doing in our lives. In the group, we watch over one another in love. Somewhat surprisingly, people find this small group experience enjoyable and meaningful. Why would you not want to try it? Sign up today.
I  Am The Vine/History of the Sanctuary Kneeling Pads
led by Chery Baird.
The Sanctuary is a visual Bible for each person to read in worship.  Using the statement that Jesus made in the gospel of John 15:1 "I am the vine, you are the branches" we will explore the secrets of the vine and the stories of Jesus in our Sanctuary and see what God has in store for you.
Young Adults
