No Park No Deals

Dear Neighbor,

As expected, the rezoning of the North Branch Industrial Corridor is now law. Alderman Waguespack (32) and I cast the only no votes against the ordinance.  Here are some of the news reports:

You can read my remarks at Council here.

We all know a park is necessary as well as infrastructure such as bridges and traffic flow improvements. The ordinance as passed does not require park space, but public officials still have the power to work with local communities to achieve it.

The burden of overseeing responsible redevelopment now shifts to the Ward level as we enter a new phase of public discussion of proposals that have already begun to surface.

Reasonable Goals

Ping Tom Park in the 25th Ward is an excellent example of how 17 public acres were assembled on the Chicago River in an old industrial zone. Using a combination of public and private funds, this beautiful park sits on an old railroad yard and is just one of many national examples of fine public parks built on old industrial lands.

I know many of you are concerned about what lies ahead. Together we remain undeterred in our fight for the public park space and vital infrastructure improvements that are so vital to this Ward and the entire North Side of the city.  As always, I welcome your comments and feedback.

If you, your block, you or your child's sports league, school or any other neighbors would like to join the growing coalition for park space, please contact me.
