Remodeled Fitness Center reopens after Winter Break

If you have been following our newsletters, you know that over Winter Break volunteers and professionals did a major overhaul of North High's weight room.  Old equipment was removed and stored in the small gym adjacent to the weight room and the 25+ -year old flooring was removed.  Volunteers installed a new rubberized floor over the bare concrete and professionals installed eight 4' x 8' mirrors and 8 new (red and black!) weight racks.  Four new stationary bikes were brought in and 4 nice Bosu balls were put into place.  A new drinking fountain with capability to fill water sippers is awaiting installation.
This completes the first phase of the total upgrade of the facility.  We are about half-way to completion, if we can raise the funds necessary to purchase the additional new replacement equipment to take the place of the sometime unsafe and definitely shoddy remaining equipment.  The usable old equipment was brought back into the facility to use until new can be purchased.  It is remarkable to see the delineation between the old and the new.  We are anticipating that the School District will add lighting during the summer and that a grant from Nike will lead to the installation of 3 Apple TVs which will enhance both teaching and coaching.
In addition to the eight weights classes that use the facility, with average class sizes of over 40 students each, we are finding that use of the room before and after school has increased greatly already.  You can help make this complete makeover a reality with your tax-deductible contribution made through the North Salem Viking Alumni and Friends Association.  You may do so on line at by clicking on the link to our webpage in the upper left of this newsletter or by mailing your check made out to "Viking Association," and sent to Viking Association, c/o North Salem High School, 765 14th St. NE, Salem OR 97301.  A BIG Viking thank-you to those of you who have already given this year.

Viking Drama ROCKS musical

If you haven't been to a North High drama production in the last few years, you are missing some of the most outstanding stage events in the Salem area.  Over the last couple of weeks, Viking thespians put on a spectacular staging of the wonderful musical "Singin' in the Rain," made famous on the big screen by Debbie Reynolds, Gene Kelly, and Donald O'Connor.  The North kids ROCKED IT!  Outstanding musicianship, both on the stage and in the pit, mass tap production numbers, solo and duet dance routines, superb line presentation, and an exuberance which has come to be a hallmark of Viking productions made for a night to remember.
One enthusiastic fan, whose own acting credits include several Hollywood movies, as well as numerous stage appearances, said that she was "absolutely blown away!"  Having watched productions at the other Salem high schools and at Monmouth-Independence's Central High School, she opined that this was the best high school production she had ever seen.  With high praise like that, she will be back for more.  And you should be too!  We will let you know when the next drama event is to take place. Kudos to drama teacher Alyssa Muir and her students.

Hall of Fame

It's not too early to begin thinking about nominating someone or a team (like the '63 Viking football team) for the 2017 class of the North High Hall of Fame.  Nomination forms may be found on the Viking Association webpage (linked in the upper right on this page or at or could be mailed to you.
There are four classifications, from each of which one nominee will be selected this year.  Be sure to include as detailed a nomination as possible as the competition is very strong.  Once nominated, a person or team stays in the pool of nominees indefinitely until, hopefully, selected.

If you have not already done so, please send to Steve Chambers your full contact information (name, maiden name where applicable, street address, phone number, and graduating class or if your are a friend) as this will help us keep in contact should your e-mail address change.

Please forward this newsletter to other Vikings so they can also stay in touch with the school.
