Weekly Update
Annual Member & Retiree Recognition Event

The Department held it's annual member and retiree recognition event at the Four Points Sheraton on May 16.

Fire Lieutenant Mike Purcell, Heavy Equipment Operator Mark Stampfl, and Firefighter/Paramedic Andrew Holzer were given the Ben Destefanis Customer Service Award at the dinner. Lt. Purcell, HEO Stampfl and FF/PM Holzer, assigned to Engine 81 Green Shift, recently responded to a call for a elderly woman who suspected there was a carbon monoxide problem in her home. Upon arrival the crew found that her carbon monoxide detector wasn't functioning properly and she didn't have a means to buy a new detector for herself. The crew went to a local store and bought a detector, spending their own money, and returned to install the detector for the woman later that day. The person nominating the crew wrote, "the crew went above and beyond the call of duty to ensure the resident was safe and that she had peace of mind". FF/PM Holzer is pictured to the left accepting the award on behalf of the crew.

The Department extends its thanks to our sponsors and friends including Four Points Sheraton, Bloomer Chocolate, Farkas Automotive, Larry's Market, Marquette University, Summerfest, Country Springs Hotel, Marcus Theaters, the Milwaukee Brewers, the McGregor Family of Bayside and the event planning committee for making this event possible.
EMS Week 2018

Communities across the United States, including the seven North Shore Communities, will recognize emergency medical practitioners and their important work during Emergency Medical Services Week May 20 - May 26. All of the Department's ninety-eight sworn firefighters are licensed at emergency medical technician-basic or emergency medical technician-paramedic level in the State of Wisconsin.

In 2017, 74% of calls for service to the Department were for emergency medical services. Nearly 6,000 patients were treated by the Department in 2017.

The Department works as part of the Milwaukee County Emergency Medical Services System. In 2017, the Department achieved the American Heart Association Mission Lifeline EMS Gold Plus Level Provider Award. This award is given to agencies that demonstrate at least 75% compliance for each required achievement measure related to Cardiac and Stroke care for two consecutive years. Gold Plus is the highest level of achievement awarded.

Success in saving lives is not only a function of the EMS providers, but the 911 Telecommunicators, the hospital systems and the general public. Members of the community can prepare themselves by learning Hands-Only CPR and downloading the Pulsepoint App on their mobile devices.
