Manhattan Beach
by Jennifer Egan

A young woman begins an affair with a suave gangster she suspects was involved in the disappearance of her beloved father when she was a child. Set mostly during the Second World War, this ambitious novel by the Pulitzer Prize winning author of  A Visit from the Goon Squad vividly evokes an anxious era and presents a formidable protagonist in Anna Kerrigan, whose ambition to become the first woman diver at the Brooklyn Navy Yard was evidence of her refusal to believe that she couldn't do anything as well as any man.

We Were Eight Years in Power: An American Tragedy

In these "urgently relevant essays,"* the National Book Award-winning author of   Between the World and Me  reflects on race, Barack Obama's presidency and its jarring aftermath"*--including the election of Donald Trump.

THE MOOSEWOOD COLLECTIVE has nineteen members who share responsibilities and participate in the various jobs necessary to run what has grown from a very small natural foods restaurant to a larger and more diversified company. Some members have worked for the restaurant since it was founded in 1973.

Following her record-breaking debut trilogy, Leckie, winner of the Hugo, Nebula, Arthur C. Clarke and Locus Awards, returns with an enthralling new novel of power, theft, privilege and birthright.

The definitive biography of an American icon, from a
New York Times best-selling author with unique access to Ali's inner circle.

He was the wittiest, the prettiest, the strongest, the bravest, and, of course, the greatest (as he told us himself). Muhammad Ali was one of the twentieth century's most fantastic figures and arguably the most famous man on the planet.

Ella May has never had much of anything. She labors long hours in a textile mill in North Carolina trying to feed her four young children on $9 a week. Ella finds herself something of a local celebrity when she sings one of her songs at a meeting of workers hoping to form a union. Written in a beautifully evocative prose, this novel about bigotry and labor unrest in the 1930s exerts a powerful impact that pulls the reader into the vortex of the struggle for social justice. It deserves to assume a place of honor in the canon of great Southern literature. - Alden Graves

This luminous piece of historical fiction is set in early 20th century Irish-Catholic Brooklyn. It is a tale of how a man's death resonates through subsequent generations whose faith and beliefs have been shaped by their religion and superstitions. The author beautifully and non-judgmentally relates how they are doing the best they can with the lives they are given, flawed but good-intentioned, in making choices on love and vocation. Gorgeous.

October Newsletter
Greetings,
Having just returned from a regional trade show and board meetings about the future of independent bookselling, I am reminded of both the robustness and fragility of the niche we chose to carve out in the world. Beyond the realities of retail, of bookselling, of change and of uncertainty in general, great books are being written all the time. It is amazing really - the power of story is as relevant and powerful and restorative and revealing as ever. Fact or fiction, we need story. And books give them to us in a unique way.

Just this month alone, we have authors spanning the spectrum of storytelling visiting our stores. From our old friend mystery writer Archer Mayor to the Monks of New Skete who teach us about our dogs; from famous Buddhist teacher Sharon Salzberg who is discussing the art of love to Jeff Goodell whose title The Water Will Come explores climate change. We have many kids events in both stores and staff favorite John Boyne for The Heart's Invisible Furies . I invite you to join us for some of our author visits - they are almost always enriching and fun.

Be well,
Chris Morrow

Join us for a training technique demonstration and question and answer session with Brother Christopher of the Monks of New Skete and dog training expert Marc Goldberg, as they share tips and wisdom from their new book
