Alan Benoit Sustainability Series presents:
Your Home on Earth
Thursday, June 21st, 6 pm

alanA house is more than a box sitting on a lawn; it is, instead, a complex union of interactions between a dwelling, the environment, the earth and the sun.

Join Alan Benoit, local architect; Paul Myers, retired geology professor and president of the Perfect House Committee; and Karen Lee, co-owner of Solar Pro, as they explore some of these interactions and how they affect your home and your life.

Pulitzer-prize winner Richard Russo
and Kate Russo
Interventions
Friday, June 22nd, 7 pm

An exceptional book and an exceptional event - Please join us as we welcome Rirrchard and Kate Russo. In what many perceive as a coldly relentless digital age, Pulitzer-prize winning author, Richard Russo has teamed up with his daughter, artist Kate Russo, to create Interventions, their tribute to the printed book.

Interventions: Three previously published stories, Horseman, High and Dry, and The Whore's Child, and the title novella, Intervention, a never-before-published story, positively crackle with Russo's piercing and understated insight into the lives of ordinary people. Beautifully packaged, each story is an individually soft-bound volume with a cover illustration by Kate. Framable prints of her paintings accompany each book and all are collected into a slipcase.

Judith Rosen, of Publishers Weekly, interviews Richard Russo: "Richard Russo is no stranger to collaboration..."

James Geary
I Is an Other
Saturday, June 23rd, 7 pm
9780061710292Smart fun for anyone fascinated by the play of language. From President Obamas political rhetoric to the bursting of the housing bubble, from conversations to commercials, James Geary shows that every aspect of our day-to-day experience is molded by metaphor.

James Geary, author of Gearys Guide to the Worlds Great Aphorists and the New York Times bestseller The World in a Phrase, takes readers from Aristotles investigation of metaphor right up to the latest neuroscientific insights into how metaphor works in the brain. Witty, persuasive, and original, I Is an Other explores metaphors effects on financial decision making, effective advertising, leadership, learning, and more.

Five Classic Novels Every Book Lover Should Read
Tuesday, June 19, 4-5:30pm

The novel, said D.H. Lawrence, is the "one bright book of life." Among the great books of civilization and the glories of English and American fiction are these five novels:

Henry Fielding's Tom Jones, Jane Austen's Emma, Charles Dickens's Great Expectations, Herman Melville's Moby-Dick, and George Eliot's Middlemarch.

What qualities make these five novels so special? Examining these books in chronological sequence, this lecture traces the development of the novel as the most important and popular form of literature and considers the connecting links among Fielding, Austen, Dickens, Melville, and Eliot
