Managing Conflict Up, Down and Sideways in a Muli-Generational Workplace
There are many ways to manage conflict. Add the unique behavioral styles of each of the four adult generations that inhabit our workplaces to the mix and you have a prescription for multidimensional conflict! In 2007, the Society for Human Resource Management reported that nearly 60% of HR managers at large companies observed conflict flowing from generational differences. A 2011 SHRM poll reports that 75% of HR managers recognize generational diversity as a cause for workplace conflict. Why aren't we getting better at this? This session will ask participants to examine their thoughts on the conflicts they face in their organizations and determine how many of these conflicts can be attributed to generational differences and the biases we hold toward and against each generation. Generational theories will be presented as a way of identifying causes of generational behavior, and finally, tips and solutional on leading each generation will be presented in the hope of introducing participants to ways to eliminate generationally-based workplace conflict. This program has been approved for 3.5 general recertification credit hours toward PHR, SPHR and GPHR recertification through the HR Certification Institute.

Cultural Competence in Managing Conflict

There are many ways to manage conflict. Positioning business leaders and HR professionals to lead, execute and operate in an environment of cultural competence will enable them to align the management of a diverse workforce with the organization's strategic intent. Focusing on learning outcomes in the areas of diversity maturity, increasing cultural competence and the identification of micro-inequities, this session will take participants through culturally aware models of conflict resolution. Colorism, linguistic profiling and youthism will be discussed and analyzed.

To maximize the takeaways from the session the auditory, visual and kinesthetic needs of participants will be embraced. Think/Pair/Share exercises, small group exercises, multimedia PowerPoint, case studies and an individual assessment will constitute this journey. In addition, an actual EEOC case in which the absence of cultural competence lead to a charge of discrimination will be discussed and a CBA/ROI formula will be presented to demonstrate the impact of cultural competence. Finally, participants will be encouraged to create an individual mission, vision and values statement as it relates to cultural competence in order to recalibrate their thinking and better lead their organizations.
