Thank You for Being a Community Partner

Dear Friend

Your Community Foundation exists to improve the quality of life for those who live and work in Arlington now and for generations to come. Contributing to the Arlington Community Foundation is a way to collectively strengthen and improve our community. We hope we can count on your generous support as a Community Partner.

With your help, we can make a difference throughout the community - by having a significant impact on people needing housing, food, medical, legal and social support, enriching our cultural and civic life, and providing educational opportunities from pre-school through college and beyond. This past year, the Foundation awarded over $1.8 million in grants and scholarships to hard-working, effective nonprofits and college scholarships to deserving students.

The Foundation has also continued to serve as a catalyst for new community-based civic efforts and as a connector of community groups dedicated to making a difference in Arlington.

We are excited about the future and look forward to being of even greater service to the Arlington community, and to our donors by helping them achieve their charitable goals.

We invite you to invest in your community by joining the annual Community Partners campaign and making a gift at whichever level you choose. Click here to donate.

Wishing you and yours a warm, healthy and happy holiday season,

Wanda L. Pierce

Executive Director

Celebrating the Spirit of Community
Julian Fore, John Andelin, Ginger Geoffrey, Hon. William T. Newman, Jr. and Wanda L. Pierce

Last Thursday over 320 guests - the largest crowd yet for this event - joined ACF in honoring John Andelin and Ginger Geoffrey with the 2013 William T. Newman, Jr. Spirit of Community Award

Keynote Speaker John Shooshan delivered a powerful speech about philanthropy and the shared responsibility of us all to give of ourselves in proportion to what we have been given.

John & Ginger recounted together on stage the chain of events that led them to become the inspiring sources of support in our community that we all know them as today.

The event was recorded by Arlington Independent Media (AIM) to air at a future date on local television; Comcast Channel 69 and Verizon Channel 38. Click Here to watch the video!

Many attendees were able to participate in a WordCloud that represents the appreciation of the Arlington community for John & Ginger.

ACF Is Thankful For...

It is the time of year when people reflect on what they are thankful for. Here at the Arlington Community Foundation, we are thankful for so many things...

Community Volunteers: We are thankful for the countless volunteers who help us throughout the year. Whether reviewing grant applications, coordinating our special events, or just helping out at the office, it is through their work that the Foundation can accomplish all of our goals.

Donors: We are thankful for every one of our donors, from the child who held a lemonade stand to raise money for other children in need, to those whose estates have established permanent sources of support for our programs. Our donors' generosity is matched only by their vision and compassion.

AYPI & NextGenNow Members: We are thankful for the enthusiasm of the members of our Arlington Youth Philanthropy Initiative (AYPI), and of NextGenNow (our young professionals giving circle) and are excited to see what both of these initiatives will accomplish in the next year!

Fellow Nonprofits: We are thankful for all of the area nonprofits which we have the opportunity to work with throughout the year and which do so much for our community.

Schools: We are thankful for our schools which provide students with endless opportunities to thrive in Arlington and beyond.

Board Members and Staff: We are thankful for those who serve or have served on our all-volunteer Board of Trustees and for our staff, each of whom is dedicated to achieving the Foundation's mission.

And of course, any and everything that makes Arlington such a great place to live or work!

Thank You!

 Spotlight on Grant Review Panels

Since you're reading this, you are probably aware that the Arlington Community Foundation has as its focus - no surprise here - the Arlington community in the broadest sense.  You probably also know that we provide hundreds of grants and scholarships each year for the benefit of that community.  But you may not have realized the extent to which our community is involved with making these grant and scholarship awards.

We believe that community involvement is one of the cornerstones of philanthropy.  In that spirit, each of our competitive grant cycles, including our scholarship program, begins with dozens of community members volunteering their time on one of our community review panels.  The Foundation is currently in the process of awarding almost $200,000 in over 50 competitive grants, none of which would be possible without the hard work of these volunteer reviewers.  Over the past month, 45 volunteers read almost 100 grant proposals for seven different review panels, each focusing on a specific area such as the Arts, Education or Social Services.  Each panel is assembled so that it represents a wide cross section of our community, and includes those with professional expertise in that panel's focus area and deep familiarity with the needs of our community.  Their input provides guidance to our standing committees which develop final grant award recommendations for our Board of Trustees to approve.

If you are interested in volunteering on one of these panels in future grant cycles or for other volunteer opportunities, please email [email protected] for more information.

Fund Spotlight: Prompt Response Fund
Prompt Response Fund Makes Your Gift Work All Year Round!
The Arlington Community Foundation offers a vehicle which can provide the on-demand, anytime support that local nonprofit organizations need, while still giving you an immediate, year-end tax deduction. Our Prompt Response Fund provides emergency grants to support any nonprofit working in Arlington which is facing either an urgent need or an unexpected opportunity.

This past year, area nonprofits have relied on this fun for many uses, including to repair damage from a burst water pipe, to replace a crashed server and to offer an after-school camp for summer school students who would have nowhere to go.

100% of your gift to the Prompt Response Fund will go directly to helping area nonprofits address these unforeseen circumstances, allowing them to continue their good work when it is most needed.

To make a gift to the Prompt Response Fund click the "Donate Now" button above. Make sure to write "Prompt Response Fund" in the designation box.

Arlington Youth Philanthropy Initiative - Winter Blitz
A Message from the Arlington Youth Philanthropy Initiative Chair,
Rebecca Yohannes
AYPI Chair, Rebecca Yohannes

I am Chair of the Arlington Youth Philanthropy Initiative's (AYPI's) Youth Board, founded by the Arlington Community Foundation. I hope you will help me spread the word about a grant opportunity available for youth-led projects in Arlington.

What we are

AYPI's goal is to promote youth philanthropy in Arlington, VA. We serve as leaders who recruit and mentor our peers to develop youth-led, sustainable projects that positively impact the Arlington community. We work with the Arlington Community Foundation to fund, preserve and grow the Fund for Youth Philanthropy. We also oversee the development of youth-led action plans and distribute grant money under this initiative.

Why we need your help

We are holding our third annual Winter Blitz, our main grant solicitation program. We want to promote youth-led projects in the Arlington community and we have grant money available to support these projects. Youth who follow through with their ideas and make a presentation to the Youth Board may be eligible to obtain a grant of up to $1,000.

Click here for the application, which includes more information about AYPI, the grant selection criteria, and the preliminary grant application.

The deadline for grant submissions is January 15, 2014.

AYPI Youth Board members are eager to help all grant applicants with their applications. Applicants who would like help or have questions can contact me at [email protected] or the youth board at [email protected]

We can't wait to hear your idea!

Sincerely,

Rebecca Yohannes

NextGenNow
NGN

Recently, NextGenNow hosted its fifth happy hour at Continental Modern Pool Lounge in Rosslyn. Along with the usual networking, this event was a chance to collect items and money to donate to Arlington Street People's Assistance Network (A-SPAN). Attendees heard from Jan-Michael Sacharko, Director of Development and Communications, about the great things A-SPAN does to serve the homeless community in Arlington. We look forward to NGN's next event in January 2014.

Interested in joining NextGenNow? Click here to fill out a membership form and sign up by December 31st to become a founding member and help select NGN's focus in 2014.

Also, keep a lookout for the new www.ngnarlington.org launching in December 2013.
