Choose In-Home Care

As your parents advance in age, you may start to worry about how they are managing on their own. Perhaps you notice little things during visits, like an unkempt house or lawn, unopened mail on the table, expired or little food in the fridge or pantry, that make you realize just how much they are slowing down. You might be used to your mother always having something delicious baking in the kitchen or your dad pruning hedges and playing Mr. Fix-It. The reality that they can no longer keep up with the day-to-day chores of life is shocking to you as their child and almost assuredly unnerving to them. Given that so many aging Americans wish to remain in their homes as long as possible, you may be wondering how to help them do this safely.

Let's Talk Turkey
thanksgiving-dinner.jpg
The approaching holidays mean that turkey will take center stage on many people's tables. Unlike some festive fare, turkey can be a virtuous addition to your plate. Just one serving of turkey dishes up more than half of your daily protein needs, which can help keep you feeling full longer. It also contains selenium, a necessary nutrient for proper thyroid and immune function, and several B vitamins. Feel free to help yourself to seconds sans guilt!

Keeping Perspective: Gearing Up for the Holidays

It is hard to believe it is November already. With the holidays approaching, it is especially important to take stock of how you spend your time and consider what you can legitimately add to your plate while still enjoying yourself and leaving time for the things that truly fulfill you.

Anyone in the role of family caregiver may have to make an even bigger commitment to enjoying the holidays and balancing their time. Caring for a loved one whose health is failing or mental ability is declining can leave you desperately searching for something to be grateful for. The monotony of daily caregiving and lack of recognition for your sacrifices can leave you less than excited to celebrate the holidays. Family caregiving often places strain on sibling relationships as well, especially when one sibling is handling the majority of the caregiving responsibility. As difficult as it can be, letting go of your resentment and anger can free you up emotionally to relax and focus on what you are thankful for. Learning to say no and asking for help can be the two best gifts you give yourself this year. Home Care Plus can help shoulder the caregiving burden and bring you and your loved ones peace of mind. Give us a call today!

November is American Diabetes Month

Diabetes is one of the leading causes of disability and death in the United States. One in 12 Americans has diabetes - that's more than 25 million people. And another 79 million adults in the United States are at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

This month, Home Care Plus is helping raise awareness about diabetes and the importance of healthy living in diabetes prevention.

If you are overweight, have high blood pressure, or are age 45 or older, you are at higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes. The good news is that making healthy changes can greatly lower your risk. To help prevent type 2 diabetes:

  • Watch your weight.
  • Eat healthy.
  • Get more active.

For more information, visit the American Diabetes Association's website.
