A Note from the School Council

Assalamualaikum,

The Golden Apple Award for Excellence in Teaching is one of the most prestigious honors a teacher can receive in the State of Illinois. For the past three decades, Golden Apple has chosen 10 outstanding teachers to receive this award. This year, MCC Academy Principal Mr. Habeeb Quadri has been selected to serve on the 2016 Awards Selection Committee. Mr. Quadri will be working among a group of approximately 80 other educators from across Illinois to select the top 10 finalists from among the High School Awards Selection Committee. It is certainly an honor for MCC Academy to have our school principal selected to be part of this process.

The Council's first Open Forum was held on October 13.  Though it was not well attended, the Council plans on holding Open Forums in the future.  Dates are yet to be determined.

Our first quarter for the 2015-16 school year is ending on October 30th.  Inshallah, as always, this year will be one of growth and prosperity for everyone in the MCCA community.

Jazakallah Khayrun,

In previous years, we've had a great response from our community for this exciting program. This year we had 6 teachers and parents read stories to our little ones up to 4th grade. Middle schoolers had a game show and NERF ball competition. While the children were being entertained, there was a parent seminar for the adults to learn from. Drinks and snacks were provided for free.

Annual Audit Produces Transparency and Best Practices for MCC Academy

Since the school's inception more than 25 years ago, the board of our umbrella organization, the Muslim Community Center (MCC), made it a priority to oversee the financial health and wellbeing of the MCC Academy by hiring an external company each year to conduct an audit of the MCC Academy's finances. This year, MB & Company of Chicago, IL, conducted and recently completed this year's audit to make certain the school is in full compliance of regulatory rules and regulations and that our accounting records are fully examined to make certain no errors exist in the financial statement. MB & Company has no affiliation with MCC or MCC Academy to ensure that the audit is completely unbiased.

An external audit does not have a standard length, rather it proceeds until the company has finished its thorough examination. Generally, our external audit begins shortly after June 30th of each year, which is the fiscal year end for MCC since this is when the accounting books are closed and financial statements for the year are prepared.

At the end of the audit, MB & Company prepares and delivers a summary report to the MCC board. This report is helpful in detailing the findings from the audit, including any discrepancies found in the reporting and/or any non-compliance of rules and regulations. The auditor findings offer the organization a way to correct any discrepancies and stay in compliance with regulatory bodies.

Middle School Students Experience the Joy of Giving

"Humanity is not dead." - Sara Ismael
" This was the best day ever." - Fahad Mohiuddin
" I was really tired at the end, but felt really amazing even though it was hard work." - Adam Djoudi
"I am incredibly proud of how well we worked together." - Hanna Choubka
"Can We do this again???PLEEEEEEAASEEEEE!!!!! - Too many students to name

These were comments by our MCCA Middle School students after working together in bustle of activity on Project Rizq last week as we wrapped up the Month of Giving. As part of our middle school tradition of service learning, we teamed up with Project Rizq to make bagged lunches for the homeless.

This was truly a beautiful undertaking. While packing lunches for the homeless, authentic learning goals were being driven home as students, tired but satisfied, worked side by side with teachers. Mrs. Kamani even brought the hifz girls down and let them put the Quran into practice by having her students experience the joy of giving sadaqah.

Alhamdulillah, we collected over 5000 food items, thanks to the generosity of our middle school parents - May Allah SWT reward each and every one of you a thousand times over. During the week, students began to understand the logistics of organizing such drives by counting food, assigning locations, determining stations, and, finally, by conveying data to the organizers.

Finally on drive day, the 8th-graders displayed incredible leadership and organization skills by bringing all the food items down to the cafeteria and organizing them in such a way as to make the assembly line possible. They manned their assigned stations and became the unofficial leaders of the project. When Project Rizq arrived, the food packing and sandwich making began. It was incredibly humbling and gratifying to see students share tasks with each other, to solve problems that arose during the assembly line, to solve issues of bottlenecks and production, and finally to exceed their goal.

Alhamdulillah, we started with a goal of 750 bagged lunches but ended up making over 850 lunches and over 1000 individual sandwiches. Students understood how when we come together and work with each other we can make great things happen. This was a priceless lesson to learn. In just looking at the kids tired but shining faces, it was beautiful to see how true happiness does not lie in material fun but rather in the handiwork of serving others and feeding your soul.

MCCA Library Update

Asalaamu alaikum Parents,

Fall is in full swing at the library!  Early Childhood has been learning about fall through books and sensory activities with pinecones, leaves, and other items found in the schoolyard related to autumn changes.

Elementary grades have begun AR testing, (though the majority of 1st graders will not take AR tests). Children will be taking home books that are within their grade range and students in 2nd -5th grades will take computerized tests based on the content of those stories (characters, setting, plotline, etc.). Please encourage your child to read everyday and ask them questions related to their book.

Alhamdulillah! We have had so many hands helping our library become beautiful and well stocked with books. Several families have donated gently used, popular books, which have added to our library inventory! Other parents have contributed their artistic skills in leadership through painting and art projects with children. In addition, several sisters have been regular volunteers, helping with shelving and barcoding, etc. Jazak Allah Kharyn to all those individuals who have helped in so many ways.

Happy autumn everyone!

MCC Academy Invites the Community to Partake in these Classes & Activities:

Jr. High Leadership Conference Beneficial Experience for our Students

Our middle school students attended the annual Regina Dominican Junior High Leadership Conference last month with MCCA Teacher Ms. Hiba Zakai who said this was a very rewarding experience. Our students listened to an enlightening keynote address, participated in team-building breakout sessions to learn about leadership qualities and interacted with students from 10 other participating schools. The experience encouraged our kids to step out of their comfort zones, an exercise that's always of benefit to all young people.

Students Run Clothing and Food Drive for Burmese Refugees

Alhamdulillah, in conjunction with Islamic Oasis, the MCCA middle school ran a canned food and winter clothing drive to collect items for the recent Burmese refugees who have been forced out of their homes in Myanmar. The situation in Myanmar for these Muslims is dire, resulting in the expulsion from their homes and their nation. May Allah SWT make it easy upon them and provide us with continuous opportunities to aid them. The Value of the Month for October has been giving, an
d Alhamdulillah our students did an amazing job giving. We collected nearly a thousand items including canned goods, winter coats, and blankets. The community has been extremely generous and such a beautiful example of charity and compassion has been set for our students. I received so many donations in my classroom that half of the room was filled with bags and items. My eighth graders last year had taken a service learning trip to Helping Hands, and thus they put all of that knowledge to beneficial use. They went through all the donations, sorted, checked for expiration dates, tossed out undonatable items, categorized, labelled bags, and transported them all to the pick-up location. They worked extremely efficiently and clearly demonstrated all the skills they picked up at Helping Hands last year. Additionally, this drive was also a "House" competition so students were super motivated to earn points for their team. May Allah SWT reward our students and continue to provide us with opportunities to gain good deeds. -- submitted by Sadiya Barkat

Character Building Program Update from
School Counselor Saabahath Latifi
Assalamualaikum MCC Parents!
October was anti-bullying month so our character challenges were geared towards building healthy and positive habits. We focused on our word choices, supporting our peers, and learning when, how, and who to ask for help.
The character challenges were:
1-  No swearing challenge: students were told to avoid swearing or using negative words about themselves, their peers, or anyone else. Instead, they were given positive words they could use as replacements. The goal was to encourage students to incorporate positive words in their everyday language. With better word choices our attitude, thoughts, and feelings stay healthy and happy.
2-  The caring challenge asked students to go the extra mile to make everyone feel included. The challenge had students ask their peers and teachers how their day was and if they needed any help. We wanted students to recognize when peers were feeling left out or alone, then take the extra step to make them feel included and welcome. The goal was to create a sense of belonging and unity within the school.
3- The  Asking for help challenge helped kids recognize moments and situations in which people need to ask for help and support. Students were challenged to ask parents or teachers for help when and if they felt they needed it. They could ask for help regarding school, situations with peers, or anything else that might require assistance. The goal of this challenge was to teach students that it is acceptable, healthy, and necessary to ask for help, especially in situations where grades, personal safety, or happiness could be threatened.

This month, we have also started our school community projects. Coin jars are located in the office for students to give in pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters. We want to, as a team, collect money for those in need. Students will decide, as a unit, where they would like to donate the money collected at the end of the year.  Also, a letter has been sent out to all parents regarding the care kits. Items for these kits have been assigned to each class. Please continue to bring these items in over the next few months. Once we have everything we need we can make our care kits and donate them!  I hope everyone is having a great year so far! If there are any questions, comments, or concerns please feel free to contact me at [email protected]

From the Desk of School Nurse Mrs. Plummer
Diabetes Awareness Month
Approximately 17% (or 12.7 million) of children and adolescents aged 2-19 years are obese.

In children and adolescents age 2 to 19 years, obesity was defined as a body mass index (BMI) at or above the 95th percentile of the sex-specific CDC BMI-for-age growth charts.

Why is childhood obesity considered a health problem?

Doctors and scientists are concerned about the rise of obesity in children and youth because obesity may lead to the following health problems:
  • Heart disease, caused by: high cholesterol and/or high blood pressure
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Asthma
  • Sleep apnea
  • Social discrimination
Childhood obesity is associated with various health-related consequences. Obese children and adolescents may experience immediate health consequences and may be at risk for weight-related health problems in adulthood.

Be Proactive
  1. Move MoreChildren: Sixty minutes or more per day of aerobic activity, with most of the activity of moderate or vigorous intensity and with vigorous-intensity physical activity on at least 3 days. Muscle strengthening and bone strengthening activity also should be included at least 3 days per week.Adults: Two hours and 30 minutes (150 minutes) of moderate-intensity aerobic activity (e.g., brisk walking) every week or 1 hour and 15 minutes (75 minutes) of vigorous-intensity aerobic activity (e.g., jogging or running) every week or an equivalent mix of moderate- and vigorous-intensity aerobic activity every week. Muscle-strengthening activities that work all major muscle groups (legs, hips, back, abdomen, chest, shoulders, and arms) on 2 or more days a week. For additional and more extensive health benefits, adults aged 18-64 years increase their aerobic activity to 300 minutes of moderate-intensity or 150 minutes of vigorous-intensity physical activity or an equivalent mix of both (categorized as "highly active").

2.   Make healthy food choices
3.   Long-term changes that work for you (everyday)

Art Class with Mrs. Sikander

Students are enjoying formal art classes with Art Teacher Mrs. Sikander, who tries to incorporate an Islamic concept or lesson into all of the projects she has her students working on. A few of the recent projects she has done with students are displayed throughout the Skokie campus.

4B students created vintage-inspired paintings using their favorite city as a muse. They wrote words to describe the city in wax-resist and drew one thing reminiscent of the city.

Mrs. Sikander discussed with 2A students the journey that the Prophet Ibrahim (A) took to find Allah (swt) to inspire their work on Sun and Moon light and dark silhouettes. Students were asked to draw a silhouette over their sun or moon, then do whimsical designs around it. The light (noor) of the artwork is an analogy of the beauty of the noor that Allah (swt) puts within us.

First-graders used leaves they collected from outside to create an imprint painting.

Mrs. Saleh: A Hero Teacher

Submitted by Middle School Teacher Sadiya Barkat:
I have been a part of the MCCA middle school for over a decade and never regretted a moment. The students, administration and staff have made this an amazing place to teach, learn and grow. One particular person who holds our department together and is truly an inspiration for me is our phenomenal science teacher Mrs. Abeer Saleh. We all know Mrs. Saleh is an amazingly adept science teacher, taking her students t o victory year after year at the state science fair, but she is so much more than that. She is an incredibly selfless human being. She doesn't just teach science, but rather she teaches children with care, compassion, and a true desire to see them succeed. Mrs. Saleh's love of children and her concern for their wellbeing goes beyond the classroom. Mrs. Saleh proved just what a true hero she is last week by helping to make our streets safer for all of our children. When Mrs. Saleh was returning home one evening last week, she saw a car stop next to a neighborhood boy walking his bicycle. Mrs. Saleh could tell from the boy's expression that he was confused and didn't know the person in the car. Rather than go about her way, Mrs. Saleh pulled up next to the car, thinking of the safety of the boy. As soon as she pulled up, the car sped off. Upon asking the boy what happened, he said that the man asked him a strange question. Mrs. Saleh's instincts made her immediately suspicious. She actually chased the suspicious vehicle, obtained its license plate, make and model, as well as getting a mental image of the driver. Even though the driver tried to escape her, she still chased him relentlessly until she got the information. Then, she dutifully conveyed this information to the police department, who thanked her profusely and told her the information she provided helped tremendously as they had been looking for this person. Now, she is working with the department to identify this criminal and get him behind bars where he belongs. Mrs. Saleh, you are truly an inspiration for me. It is how we act in the heat of the moment and how much we risk to help others that shows the depth of our faith. Mrs. Abeer Saleh thank you for being a fantastic role model for our students and our community. May we all be inspired by your example.

Kids Enjoy Team-building Games

For the past few weeks, students in P.E. have had a blast kicking off our first unit, team-building games! Every week, students have participated in a different game incorporating fun, fitness and team-building skills. So far, students have worked up a sweat and built up their muscles playing fitness dodgeball, fitness freeze tag and circle dodgeball. Besides working on flexibility and cardiovascular endurance through daily stretching and warm-ups, during each game, students performed various muscular strength/endurance training exercises such as squats, crunches, toe touches, incline push-ups, planks and many more! Most importantly, they have been learning to develop cooperation, respect, teamwork and good sportsmanship.

Kids Glad to be Mad Scientists

The new Mad Scientists club is off to a radical start! In the first session, kids conducted an experiment about liquids and solids, putting together a mixture showing how the ingredients reacted to both a hard and soft touch. During the second meeting, students worked on circuits and each group got to make a mini-radio. They were thrilled to see their devices function! JazakAllahkhairun to club leaders Mevla Rama, Khaula Chaudhry and Andrea Mounadi.
Art Club Students Create Little Masterpieces

Head of this year's Art Club Mrs. Nora Choubhka is dazzling students with creative art projects on Fridays after school at the Morton Grove campus. Kids have made book marks and aluminum foil paintings with much more planned in the coming weeks!
Mrs. Saleh - Middle School Science Update

The 6th graders were studying about the effects of an oil spill on wild life and the environment by creating a simulation of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill that occurred in 2010 off the Gulf of Mexico. They were trying to determine the best methods of cleaning an oil spill off of feathers, rocks, and water. They learned the techniques that scientists actually used and are still using to this day to clean such disasters, such as using polymers for this purpose.

The 7th graders studied DNA and had the opportunity to observe the DNA of a strawberry. By following the steps of properly filtering and using appropriate solutions, the students were able to extract DNA from strawberries and learned how they are octoploids, meaning they only have 8 chromosomes versus 46 chromosomes in humans.

5A - Mrs. Gomaa and Ms. Barkat

Earlier  in the school year Mrs. Gomaa and Ms. Barkat's 5th-graders led a School Supply Backpack Drive for Syrian children. Alhamdulilah, we were able to collect over 300 donated backpacks filled with school supplies from 1st-5th graders at MCCA. All donations were sent to Syrian refugees in Lebanon last month through the Syrian Orphans Organization. InshAllah, these items reach those in need and may Allah swt open up additional opportunities for us to continue to keep helping our brothers and sisters around the world.
2A - Mrs. Sheikh

This last month, my second graders were very busy learning new concepts.  They went on a field trip to Goebert's Farm where they got a taste of a rural area.  This visit reinforced their concept of communities. Children went on a trolley ride
and picked their own corn. They got an opportunity to feed and pet animals. Each  child brought back a pumpkin that we painted in class.

In reading, students learned how to differentiate between realistic fiction and informational text. Math has been fun with adding and subtracting numbers with and without regrouping.  These days we are working on word problems.  Last week, parent volunteer Faizah Syed did an art project with my class based on communities. Children enjoyed doing the project. Thanks to Mrs. Syed.  I would like to thank our chaperones: Dr. Nadeem, Mrs. Ghori, and Mrs. Ibisi for volunteering on the field trip.

1C - Mrs. Nabeel

Here's some tidbits of what we are learning in Mrs. Nabeel's pond.

Reading: We have been learning about different genres. We enjoyed the Reader's Theater "Country Mouse and City Mouse".  We learned that it is a fable. My reading group had a blast acting out the play.

Language Arts: We created our Sentence Buddies to help us remember to write complete sentences. Our Sentence Buddies will help us remember to start our sentences with a capital letter (head), have a noun and verb (arms) and lastly end our sentences with correct punctuation marks (feet).

Writing workshop: We learned about Christopher Columbus then got to write using the prompt - "If I were an explorer." Students learned about the different stages of writing. We enjoyed hopping our frogs to show what stage we are working on.

Math: We completed our Math About Me projects to practice making addition sentences using math facts about ourselves such as how old we are, how many people are in our families, our favorite numbers, pets, siblings and so forth. We love singing our Math Song that tells us how we use math for everything daily.  We love our new math centers where we get to practice math on white boards, our classroom ten-frame, using counters and other manipulatives to make addition and subtraction stories.

Social Studies/ Science: Students enjoyed taking a nature walk where they use their five senses to find things we may see, smell, hear, touch and taste in autumn. We created our own personal calendars to help us remember important dates in October.

Field Trip: Our field trip to Goebbert's Farm was extremely fun. We had a frog-tastic time. We would like to thank Zayd's mom and Rand's sister for accompanying us on our field trip.

KgA - Mrs. Shariff

Mrs. Shariff's Kindergarten class is in full swing.  Alhamdullilah, the students have learned and gotten accustomed to their new rules and routines and are enjoying kindergarten to their fullest.

Students start off the day with the beautiful verses from the Quran and a dua' which provides the utmost barakah in our time to learn all the exciting things being taught.

In reading, our students focus mainly on the short vowel sounds and learn a new sight word every day. In addition, students read leveled readers which are imperative in promoting literacy and comprehension.  The most exciting part of the month was when we read a story called Sally's Pizzeria followed by our students making their own personal pizzas!

In math, we have focused on topics such as calendar, AB, ABC, AAB patterns, and size.  In KG, we make sure that we diversify learning to meet the unique needs of students. Students enjoy conceptual and procedural learning through play, educational videos, learning centers, and hands-on activities.

I would like to thank Mrs. Choubka for volunteering to come in to do an art activity for the month of October. We appreciate your hard work and dedication.

Prek-A - Mrs. Metovic

The year has started great with our students. We started the month blessed with our Hajj program. In preparation for the Hajj program, students made their kabahs. After, Hajj we celebrated! Prek-A had a fun-filled day with games, ice cream, and a day to wear their cute outfits. Prek-A made caterpillars for letter C - they did an awesome project which they loved! Every  Friday  we do our Show-and-Tell.  Two of our students of the month were Aya and Talha. Not done just yet...we did something else that was super cool - Prek-A went to Didier's Farm! Everyone had a blast and was super-excited to be on a hayride. That's all for now, until next month, inshAllah!
Prek-C - Mrs. Rahman

Mrs. Rahman's minions in Pre-K C have settled in to the class routines and procedures. They have been learning the alphabet, sounds the letters make and numbers everyday. Mrs. Rahman's minions are able to write their names independently now and have been writing the alphabet! This month, the kids have been learning all about the season of fall. The students witnessed leaves that have changed colors to red, yellow, orange, golden, purple and brown. Students went outside to collect different color leaves and saw the different shapes and textures of leaves. For the season of fall, the students went on a field trip to Didier's Farm to see the corn maze, sit on the tractor, see many farm animals and pick a pumpkin to take home. See the pictures and how much fun they had on their field trip!
1A - Miss Malik

We're so excited that Fall is here! We had a great time on our field trip to Goebertt's Farm.   Thank you to Mrs. Alali, Mrs. Hyderi, and  Mrs. Shethwala for accompanying us and ensuring that we stayed safe.  On our trip we used our five senses to explore.

We are working on becoming better writers.   We took some time to discuss our favorite fall activities and write about them. In Math we used our writing skills to create our own addition and subtraction number stories.  We learned all about fact families and created fact family homes in Math.
There is so much more fun and learning that will be happening in our classroom. We can't wait!

Part-Time Early Childhood Program - Mrs. Patel

In addition to focusing on major math and reading concepts, our Early Childhood Part-time students have been learning about Allah as Al-Khaliq, the Creator. They read a story titled Life Begins and discussed the greatness of our Khaliq by listing the many things we see around us that Allah has created. They children made their own min posters/drawings based on this theme. The children reviewed four surahs: Fatiha, Ikhlas, Nass and Falaq.

3rd Grade - Mrs. Patel, Mrs. Aqueel, Mrs. Emma

Third grade has had an exciting past few weeks. We started out the year learning about plants in science. The students had a chance to do their own planting and have had a blast observing the growth of their plants in their classrooms. After plants, we dove straight into our animal lesson. We started the lesson out by taking the third graders on a field trip to Goebbert's Pumpkin Patch where they were able to visit all sorts of exotic animals. The kids were intrigued to be face-to-face with a giraffe, take pictures with a tiger, and walk by a bear! As we took a deeper look into mammals, we were lucky to enough to have a cat visit us at the school that the kids could pet and play with.

Third grade math is also getting a lot more fun as the students have started taking timed multiplication tests. Each week the teachers enjoy watching our students cheer each other on to complete the 50-question multiplication test in just 5 minutes.

Writing is a key component of the third grade curriculum. We have already started our third writing five-paragraph narrative piece and students have been very proud of their work. We are continuously seeing more and more creativity come out in their writing and can't wait to share this progress with the parents very soon.

The third grade team would like to thank all the parent volunteers who have taken time out to come to our classes and done fun art projects, had ice cream parties, and helped inside of our classrooms. We have been blessed with wonderful students, and look forward to rest of the year.

KgC - Mrs. Kurtovic
In KG-C, we are continuing to learn about short vowel sounds. So far, we learned the short vowels A, I, and U. Students love working on projects that follow the short vowel sounds. We also love learning new sight words. So far, in our class, we've covered 22 new sight words. Our students love using play-doh to make a new sight word of the day. This month we read our favorite story "Pizza at Sally's" where students got a chance to make their own pizza using real ingredients. They loved making pizza using dough, sauce, and cheese. Also, as the fall season is here, our students did a fall project about leaves. They got to decorate using tissue paper with fall colors. For our free playtime, we love working on puzzles. We were finally able to complete our dinosaurs puzzle, and it took great teamwork to complete it! In Math, we worked on comparing sizes, patterns, and skip counting. So far we learned how to skip count by 10s, 5s, and 2s.

KgB - Mrs. Siddiqui
Reading: Students listened to a story called "Pizza At Sally's" which talked about a girl named Sally and how she has a pizza shop and the way she makes pizza, takes orders etc. It went into detail on how the pizza is made step by step. After students listened to the story, students made their very own pizza's at school! They did this in the cafeteria, teacher's prepared the dough and students flattened it in a aluminium tray, put sauce on it and sprinkled cheese and then took it home to be baked and eaten! =) pictures are attached.
We had a parent volunteer who came in to do an art project in our class.  Mrs.Abdul (Hayyan's mom) came in and had the students work on self portraits. Students drew pictures of themselves and glued in on a paper with their name on it. Students then glued that on construction paper and decorated it! Pictures are attached!
We also had another parent volunteer for mystery reader! Mr. Salahuddin (Nida's dad) came in and read some stories to the kids. One was about Creepy carrots!
PrekB - Mrs. Akbany

Prek-B learned about the season of fall. They learned about the different harvests of autumn and how the leaves change colors. They took a field trip to Didier Farm! There, they rode on a tractor, ran through the corn maze, saw different farm animals at the petting zoo, and picked a pumpkin to take home! They had a blast!
2C - Mrs. Bozai
It's been an amazing and busy month in Ms. Bozai's 2C. We celebrated Eid, went on a field trip to Goebbert's Farm, and learned so many new and exciting things!
In reading, we analyzed "Diary of a Spider," a humorous fiction story about the friendship between a spider and a fly. In math, we studied subtraction with regrouping and across zeros. In social studies, we learned about different types of communities.

This month, we need to give a special thanks to all the parents who went above and beyond to make our classroom experience a fun one! Thank you to Umar Nadeem's mom for being our mystery reader! Thank you to Mahnoor Khan, Aisha Ahmed, and Ibrahim Nubani's moms for throwing us an Eid icecream party! Thank you to Faizan Chaudry's mom and Musa Baig's dad for chaperoning our field trip! To all of our classroom parents for continuing to be involved and making dua for us -THANK YOU.
4th - Mrs. Pathan & Mrs. Khan
4th grade has gone on our first field trip this month. It was both fun and educational. We went to Legoland. Students built their own stories which had to include: setting, plot, and character. We had just learned about this in reading class. Afterwards that presented their stories. Each was unique in its own way. Students got a chance to really use their imagination and bring it it life. Afterwards, 4th grade got to enjoy all the attractions at Legoland such as rides and 4D short movies. Students had a great experience. Also, during picture day, 4th grade did a great job praying in the classroom. Finally, for social studies, students were wrapping up the first chapter with renewable and nonrenewable resources. To make sure students mastered the skill, students were asked to sort things into each category in groups and explain why they placed it there.

2B - Mrs. Baig
The second graders are busy working with numbers in math! They are becoming experts with adding and subtracting three digit numbers and regrouping. We used white boards, played Jeopardy and dice games to help us reinforce the concept. We are now very excited to move on to multiplying!
In science, we are learning about how animals grow and change. We ordered a butterfly kit and will soon watch the life cycle of it, and record the stages in our journals. Students are also assigned an animal research project that they will present to the class once they turn it in.

Preschool - Mrs. Malik
October has been a very busy month for our young preschoolers!
During the first week, we spent an entire week learning about the preschoolers' families. We created a box collage and covered it with pictures of their family members. Then, the preschoolers presented them to the class. Continuing with our family theme, preschoolers decorated a frame with colored dry pasta in which they placed their family pictures.  Preschoolers also practiced different forms of painting during this busy month. They explored painting through printing, marble painting, finger painting, and sponge painting. It was a blast!
Preschoolers also experienced their very first field trip, including their first ride on a school bus! We took our class trip to Didier's Farm where they were able to enjoy a hayride, petting different farm animals, saw a corn field, walk through a pumpkin patch, and getting to take their very own pumpkin home.
The last big event in preschool was the beginning of our Star of the Week. Every preschooler gets the opportunity to bring in a few of his or her favorite items to present to the class. He or she also brings in photos of themselves (and their families) which gets placed up on our special Star of the Week bulletin board!
Alhamdulillah it has been an amazing month for our preschoolers as they continue to learn new things every day and expand their curious minds!
