Family Volunteer Day Thanksgiving Baskets
Doing Good Together and Heading Home
 
Date/Time: Saturday, November 19, 10 -11:30am
 
Location: Cambridge. You'll be given directions once you register

Doing Good Together and Heading Home have partnered to provide a venue for you and your children to create Thanksgiving Baskets for at least 25 families in the Boston area. We hope to make many more than 25, but we can only do that with your generous donations. Volunteer families are asked to contribute approximately $75 worth of materials but that is only a guideline. Whatever amount you feel comfortable donating is greatly appreciated. Please check out the event flyer and the materials donation sheet for the event. There will be a brief video on Heading Home and it's mission, along with arts & crafts to make decorations and cards for the baskets. If you cannot make the event PLEASE consider making a donation to Heading Home or to the event for Thanksgiving Basket supplies.

Fall Clean-up and Bulb Planting
Southwest Corridor Park Conservancy
 
Date/Time: Saturday, November 5, 10am - noon
 
Location: Southwest Corridor by Orange Line MBTA Massachusetts Ave Stop.

Here is an opportunity for your family to restore and enrich a public park in the city. The 4.7-mile, 50-acre park is sited along the MBTA's Orange Line transit corridor and serves 130,000 residents and commuters. In partnership with the public, adjacent businesses, educational and cultural institutions, the Southwest Corridor Park Conservancy gathers resources to restore and maintain the Park, its plantings, structures, play areas, and community programs.  Volunteers will (weather permitting) participate in a general park clean up, transplant shrubs and perennials, and plant bulbs for the fall. Please wear long pants and closed toed shoes. Bring a water bottle along too!
 
Ages: All ages are welcome to volunteer but an accompanying adult must supervise all children. Dress children appropriately for the weather and garden work.

Food Distribution at Belmont Food Pantry
Belmont Food Pantry
 
Date/Time:
  • 1st and 3rd Saturday of the month, 8:30 - 9:30am
  • 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of the month, 5:30 - 6:30pm
Location: 222 Concord Ave, Belmont. Starting November 5, the Belmont Food Pantry will be located at Mount Hope Church, 51 Lexington St near Waverley Square. There is NO street parking in front of the church or in the driveway next to the church. You can park in the Municipal parking lot and on the side streets: Thayer Road & Sycamore Street.

The Belmont Food Pantry Inc. depends entirely on volunteers! Volunteers are needed to help on distribution days to help sort, shelve, and distribute food. 

Ages: All ages welcome but children under 12 must be supervised and must work with their accompanying adult .
 
Time Commitment: One hour per shift. Most jobs are a small bi-monthly time commitment, yet very important to keeping the Belmont Food Pantry running and serving those in need.
 
 
Sort & Inspect Food
Greater Boston Food Bank
 
Date/Time: Saturday, November 5 and November 19, 9:30am - noon
 
Location: 70 South Bay Avenue, Boston

Volunteers are needed to help the Greater Boston Food Bank to inspect, sort, and box food to be sent to 600+ hunger relief agencies (food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, etc.). With volunteer efforts, the Food Bank can feed more than 87,000 hungry people per week .

Ages: Children older than eight are encouraged to attend. An adult must supervise all children. This project can be physically tiring.

Family Table Distribution
Jewish Family & Children's Services
 
Date/Time: Sunday, November 6 and November 20, 9am - 1:30pm
 
Location: 1430 Main Street, Waltham

Family Table provides healthy food on a monthly and emergency basis to individuals and families in need. Their mission is to offer food in a way that meets nutritional and spiritual needs. Family Table serves more than 100 towns across Greater Boston, the North Shore, and the South Area. Currently, Family Table is helping more than 400 families each month with groceries and connections to other services. Volunteers are needed to help with the following tasks:
  • Set-up the pantry
  • Sort food donations
  • Package orders for recipient families
  • Deliver food to recipients
Ages: All ages are welcome and encouraged to volunteer when accompanied by an adult.
 
Time Commitment:  One to four hours depending on the activity.
 
 
 
Sort Donations for Catie's Closet
Catie's Closet
 
Date/Time: 12 School Street, Dracut
 
Location: Saturday, November 5 and November 19, 9am - noon

Catie's Closet provides an in-school resource for students who are homeless or living in poverty. Access to clothing and basic necessities are important in order for children to feel valued and build self-esteem and allow our students to better focus on their education. Volunteers will assist in our Distribution Center accepting donations and sorting, hanging and folding clothing that is then distributed to school partners. From these school closets, students in need are able to select the clothes they like as well as need in a safe, welcoming, and discreet space.

Ages: Families with children ages six and older and welcome to volunteer.  Children must be supervised by a parent or another adult

Create Holiday Cards and Crafts for Veterans
Boston Cares
 
Date/Time: Sunday, November 6, noon - 2pm
 
Location: Boston Cares (downtown Boston location will be sent upon registration)

Join Boston Cares in November to get crafty making Holiday decorations for the New England Center & Home for Veterans! Make a variety of holiday decor, snowflakes, and cards to beautify someone's holiday and show your appreciation for their service. All items made will be donated directly to clients at NECHV. Get your fix of Holiday spirit while making an impact in someone's life!

Ages: Children five and older are welcome to attend with an accompanying adult. 
 
Time Commitment: Two hours (participants are required to attend a mini orientation session right before the volunteer project begins)

Pie In The Sky Pie Sales, Pick-Up and Delivery

Location: Pie Central, Boston Convention and Exhibition Center, 415 Sumner Street, Boston

You and your children can help Community Servings during the home stretch of their Pie in the Sky pie sale with this very important task to pick up and deliver pies to locations around Greater Boston. Pies will be picked up from bakers and delivered to Pie Central. Then, completed pie orders need to be delivered from Pie Central to designated pick-up sites. Fill up your car; turn on your GPS and away you go! Pie in the Sky raises money to provide free, medically tailored and nutritional meals for Greater Boston's critically ill and their families. Community Servings provides a week's worth of meals each week to over 1,600 people. Volunteers can also help out by selling pies. Thanksgiving Meal Deliveries

Location: Community Servings, 18 Marbury Terrace, Jamaica Plain

Join Community Servings to help deliver Thanksgiving meals to individuals and families living with critical illnesses across Boston. Volunteers will need to deliver meals in their own vehicle. All volunteers will go through a delivery orientation during the first half an hour of the shift. 

Ages: Families are welcome to participate. Adult supervision is required for those under 18.

1000 Blessing Bags for the Homeless
United Sisters of Color
 
Date/Time: Saturday, November 26, 9am - 2pm
 
Location: Lena Park Community Development Center, 150 American Legion Highway, Dorchester. Completed bags must be dropped off at Dudley Library or at the Lena Park Community Center by November 12. Meet at Lena Park Community Center on November 26 at 9am to distribute bags.

United Sisters of Color is a group dedicated to community building and grassroot efforts that advance social change. In an effort to help homeless men and women in our community the United Sisters of Color will be passing out "Blessing Bags." Volunteers are needed to help donate and distribute these bags. Each bag is filled with daily essentials (and snacks) that we tend to take for granted. Our goal is distribute 1000 bags. Volunteers should commit to donating at least one complete bag. Please fill the bags with new, unused, unexpired, non-alcoholic items. Volunteers are also invited to distribute bags to the homeless within the community on November 26.

Location: The Box Project will match you with a family that lives in an area of rural poverty in the Mississippi Delta.
 
You and your family can make a difference by sponsoring a family with The Box Project. You'll enrich the lives of a family living in poverty in rural America by establishing a meaningful, long-term relationship and providing needed supplies. The Box Project helps to create supportive, personal relationships directly between a sponsor family and a family in need living in rural America. The Box Project acts as matchmaker, pairing sponsors with carefully screened individuals or families that need help. The sponsors offer long term, meaningful interactions including encouragement, advice, and boxes of needed supplies about once a month. Box items will vary from family to family and month to month, but typically include household supplies, food, school supplies, clothing or seasonal items.
