Equanimity.  That has been my key word for these past few weeks. If you're not familiar with that word, please take a moment to Google it.  (Don't worry.  I don't use it often so I had to verify myself that I was using it in the right context!)

Why this key word, you ask?  Well, let's see.  When we pour over making the best decisions based on the information provided, and inevitably someone with less information or a different viewpoint angrily challenges us; when my Facebook feed fills with posts of hate and ridiculous conspiracy theories and the urge to click the "Un" button is almost overwhelming; when we spend precious time handling issues that stem from personality conflicts and the inabilities to work as a team - when our main desire is to spend that precious time focused on helping children and families in our communities have better opportunities.....those are the times when I needed equanimity.  Calm. Composure. Peace.

This may sound like a rant, but in actuality it's an insight.  No matter how chaotic our days become, no matter what the situation presents, no matter how difficult taking a stand may be, it's our responsibility as leaders to choose our reaction.  Indeed, choosing our response to these situations is the only thing we can control. I read once:  "Successfully functioning in a society with diverse values, traditions and lifestyles requires us to have a relationship to our own reactions, rather than be captive of them."   Robert Kegan

As we approach the time when we begin to focus on what we're thankful for, I wish for someone to be thankful for the way I handled a difficult situation, or a kind word I said when it wasn't expected.  The impression we leave as we speak to others leaves an indelible mark.  We will always have those that challenge us, disagree with us and take our focus away from our goals.  That's our opportunity to take a deep breath, smile and remember why we signed up for this.  We're going to make a difference and give so many others something to be thankful for.

I'm most thankful for you.

Spotlight On...Latha Krishnaiyer
Latha Krishnaiyer
We are exceedingly proud of former Florida PTA President (1998-2000), Latha Krishnaiyer, for being named National PTA's Advocate of the Month!  Latha,  a current PTA member in Broward County, also serves on National PTA's Bylaws and Policy Committee and Strategic Planning Committee.

For years, Latha has led efforts in Florida to engage families and the community to advocate on ballot measures, host candidate forums and encourage greater civic engagement across the community. Latha explains the civic duty PTA members regarding elections in a  One Voice guest blog.

She recently hosted a candidate forum for contested state legislative, county commission and sheriff races in partnership with Kids Voting Broward and the League of Women Voters. Latha and two students sat on the panel and asked the candidates questions on their education platforms and how to involve more families in their child's education. The forum was later aired on a local television station.  Click here to view the recording.

Thank you, Latha, for continuing to advocate for children!
 Membership Matters!
PTA PROUD

Diversity and Inclusion
Happy Thanksgiving from the Diversity & Inclusion Committee. Although this is a very busy time of the year for all of us, let us be giving in all that we do and be grateful for all that is bestowed upon us.
  • We remind you that if you have not yet completed the Cultural Competency E-Learning course provided by National PTA, please do so. This course teaches cultural awareness and how to build relationships across cultural groups. We ask that as PTA leaders you too take part in this excellent training and submit your certificate of completion to [email protected].
  • Throughout the next 20 months, Florida PTA will use pictures and statistics via social media to educate and advocate underserved children as they relate to LGBTQ students, our culturally diverse students, the importance that men play in our students' lives, and our military families. Please share these memes and articles on your Facebook pages and share this information with everyone you come in contact with.
  • The Board of Directors has been issued a "Day of Service" Challenge. This day of service is meant to be completed by the BOD individual in support of the President's platform items which focus on the outreach for underserved children (foster children, homeless children, and children in the juvenile justice system). This should be completed by 6/30/2017 and pictures taken during this experience should be emailed to [email protected] with the #letthemseeus.
  • We ask that counties across the state participate in the "County Strong Day of Service" challenge. We urge county members to get together and complete a day of service in support of the President's platform items. This too should be completed by 06/30/2017 and pictures taken during this endeavor should be emailed to the diversity and inclusion email with the #letthemseeus.
Lastly, the beauty of the world lies in the diversity of its people and we hope to educate, support, and advocate for all our families across this diverse state we love profoundly. We hope that in turn you will join us in creating this change. We courage everyone to spark a change and start a revolution.

American Education Week: November 14-18
This year's theme is "Great Public Schools: A Basic Right and Our Responsibility," and will be reflected in special observances each day of the weeklong celebration.  The annual celebration of American Education Week spotlights the importance of providing every child in America with a quality public education, as well as the need for everyone to do their part in making public schools great.  PTA can help by planning events to celebrate the importance of educating our children.

Getting Involved in Your Child's Education

Parents are the biggest influence in their child's life and education.  Teachers and your child's classmates/friends are important, but parents are much more so.  The difference between a good school and an even better school is the involvement of the parents and school community.  Even if a parent doesn't have much time to become involved, 15 minutes of uninterrupted time spent with your child every day can improve study skills, build self-esteem and go along way toward a successful school experience.

Research has proven when parents are involved in their children's education, kids do better in school.. It's important for us to be involved in education.  Every parent can be involved, even if they can't make it to school during the day or to the PTA meeting.  How?
  • Read with your child, every day; while we would like for them to read great literature works, let them choose something they enjoy - it will be beneficial to both of you.  Let your child see you reading and writing.
  • Talk with your child about their school day.  Instead of "Did you have a good day at school?" ask "What was the best part of your school day?"
  • Check homework (don't do it for them) - assist if necessary.
  • Make sure your child is well rested.
  • Make sure your child has breakfast.  If your child's school does not provide breakfast, have items on hand at home for a quick breakfast.
  • Make sure your child attends school every day and is on time.  It's important for not only your child, but the other children in the class.  If your child is late, then the teacher will take time away from the entire class to review with your child.
  • Limit TV/video game viewing on school nights.
  • Vote - in school board and general elections.  Become an advocate for your child; ask candidates about their stand on the issues important to you and your children, i.e., a quality public education.
  • Write a letter to the editor of your newspaper - let them know about the wonderful things our PTAs, schools, and students are accomplishing.

Some parents and families are able to be involved in their child's education in every event.  Others may only have time for one or two activities. Whatever your level of involvement, do it consistently and stick with it because you will make an important difference in your child's life.  For more information, visit the National Education Association website.

Legislative Information...Be An Advocate!
Members of Congress have been on break in their districts and states during this busy election season. However, they will return to work in the nation's capital November 14 and with three short weeks to pass appropriations bills to fund the federal government in the next year before the deadline December 9.

Tell your member of congress today to invest in Statewide Family Engagement Centers during this appropriations process to improve family engagement in schools across the country through  National PTA's Takes Action Center.

In addition to monitoring the budget bills, National PTA is closely watching the child nutrition bills and the juvenile justice reauthorization bills, which could impact school nutrition standards and school disciplinary policies in the future. Read the OneVoice blog posts below for more info on these pieces of legislation:
