November 2016 - Seattle

Community Roots: Habitat Restoration
Seward Park Audubon Center

Date/Time: Saturday, November 5 and Saturday, November 19, 9:30am - noon

Location: Seward Park, 5902 Lake Washington Blvd S, Seattle. We will gather at the Seward Park Audubon Center and after a quick introduction will walk over to the restoration site together. You may park in the lower lot near the swimming beach or in the upper lot near Picnic Shelter #3 and the upper playground.

It's time to plant! One of the most rewarding parts of restoring habitat is to plant the native plants that will continue to grow in that place for decades to come. Join us for a community planting restoration event where you will get to better Seward Park while getting to know others in your community. Please dress for the weather. Boots are great, but any closed toe shoes will work as long as you're okay with getting them dirty. We'll provide the tools and the work gloves. Bring your water bottle. We will provide coffee and light snacks.

Ages:
Families are encouraged to participate. If you are an unaccompanied minor (under age 18) please bring completed waivers.

Time Commitment: Two and one-half hours

Environmental Service Projects
EarthCorps

Date/Time: Saturdays, 10am - 2pm (a few weekday events are also available)

Location: Seattle, Kirkland, Mercer Island, Tukwila, Tacoma, Federal Way, Shoreline and more. Check the EarthCorps calendar for weekly project locations.

Each year, EarthCorps leads more than 10,000 volunteers in environmental service projects in western Washington. While the exact tasks at hand vary, EarthCorps projects focus on improving the forests and parks in our local cities. Healthy and thriving forests are vital to our community because they absorb and naturally filter rain water, absorb toxins in the air, produce clean oxygen, provide living spaces for wildlife, and they create a place for people to connect with the outdoors. In order to help create healthy forests, we focus on removing aggressive weeds (like English Ivy or Himalayan Blackberry), maintaining areas where these weeds have been removed, and planting trees and shrubs during the rainy season. EarthCorps supplies gloves, tools, water, light refreshments, and volunteer education. EarthCorps will provide everything you need to know about tool use and safety, forest health, information on the park, and the importance of the work you'll be doing. No prior experience necessary, just come ready to learn something new!

Ages: Family members of all ages are welcome to volunteer. Only a select few sites are not appropriate for very young volunteers and are specified as such on the event info page.

Time Commitment: Four hours

Foster a Dog
CHEW Dog Rescue

Date/Time: Ongoing

Location: CHEW Dog Rescue is an all-volunteer run foster homebased dog rescue in Gig Harbor. We have foster homes ranging from Lakewood to Bremerton

CHEW Dog Rescue is dedicated to saving the lives of abandoned dogs and those in high-kill shelters and finding them permanent loving homes. CHEW is in need of volunteers to provide temporary in-home care until these dogs are adopted. All veterinary care is paid for by CHEW. Fostering dogs until we find their forever homes helps to socialize and train the dogs to trust and love people again. Rescued dogs are in temporary homes where they are learning good doggie manners while they wait for their new families to find them. A foster family must provide a safe, secure, stable environment, and most importantly, the love needed to nurture those dogs back to their happy, healthy selves. Some dogs require special care, such as post medical attention, increasing weight or strength, socializing, building trust, exercise, and fun.

Ages: Families with children can serve as foster families

Time Commitment: Being a foster care provider takes a considerable amount of time, dedication, and genuine caring.

Friendly Visitors for Seniors
Friend to Friend America

Date/Time: Ongoing

Location: Various Assisted Living, Adult Family and Group homes in the Greater Seattle area. Friend To Friend America matches volunteers in five Puget Sound counties: King, Kitsap, Pierce, Snohomish, and Thurston.

Many of the 60,000 elderly and disabled persons living in a 'Home' in the Puget Sound area never have a special visitor. Living away from family and friends, they feel isolated and lonely, which leads to further physical and mental deterioration. Many are discouraged and depressed and have lost their will to live. Visits by a caring friend add a dimension that enriches and make the lives of seniors more meaningful. Friend to Friend America links volunteers with elder friends to promote social and emotional wellness for those living in extended-care communities.

Ages: Families with children are welcome to volunteer

Time Commitment: A minimum of two hours per month for a year
