Recognizing our learners, tutors, donors and volunteers
Annual Recognition Luncheon a Success!
Approximately 225 tutors, learners and their families attended our Annual Recognition Luncheon at Bobak's Signature Events in Woodridge on September 17.
  • Jorge Blancas was the recipient of the Outstanding Learner Award.
  • Shabnam Arabshasee and Margarita Castillo were our two student speakers.
  • The 2016 Community Partner of the Year award went to DuPage County's Probation and Court Services, for helping us launch a program that matches our tutors with probationers who need help increasing their English language proficiency skills.
  • We celebrated 13 graduates and recognized 21 learners for their outstanding progress.
Marathon runners raise over $7,000
Thank you to everyone who helped raise money for Literacy DuPage by supporting Team Laps for Literacy in the Healthy Driven Naperville Marathon & Half Marathon on October 23.  We surpassed our $6,000 goal with more than $7,000 raised!
Thank you to Community Memorial Foundation
Literacy DuPage has recently received a $5,800 grant from Community Memorial Foundation.

In addition, Community Memorial Foundation (CMF) is sponsoring the "Together for Health: Impact of 3" Challenge
Grant. Literacy DuPage Board Members were challenged to match on 1:1 basis, new or increased donations from individual donors up to $9,500.  Our Board Members rose to the challenge and raised $9,312.24. CMF will match the amount raised by Board Members.  The challenge ended on September 30 with a grand total raised of $27,936.72!
A heartfelt thank you to our individual donors, Literacy DuPage Board Members, and Community Memorial Foundation for supporting our mission!
Celebrating Literacy Awareness Month
This year, 30 libraries joined us in celebrating International Literacy Day on September 8.

Our tutors work with hundreds of learners each week at these libraries, but most patrons have no idea about the life-changing work that is being done in study rooms and at tables between bookshelves.

International Literacy Day ambassadors helped shed light on our organization and gave a voice to the nearly 300 learners on our waiting list.

Thank you to the following libraries who allowed us to set up a table and inform patrons about our work: Addison, Aurora (Eola branch), Bartlett, Bensenville, Bloomingdale, Carol Stream, Clarendon Hills, Downers Grove, Elmhurst, Fountaindale (Bolingbrook), Glen Ellyn, Glenside (Glendale Heights), Hinsdale, Helen Plum (Lombard), Indian Prairie (Darien), Itasca, Lisle, Naperville (95th St. and Naper Blvd.), Oak Brook, Plainfield, Roselle, Villa Park, Warrenville, West Chicago, Westmont, Wheaton, Winfield, Wood Dale and Woodridge.
Rose Mary Persiani
1926 - 2016
Longtime volunteer and Literacy DuPage supporter Rose Mary Persiani passed away on Aug. 30, at age 89. She started volunteering in our office when she was 64-years-old and contributed more than 6,000 volunteer hours to our organization over two decades. She used her impeccable penmanship to address birthday cards to volunteers, handwrite graduation certificates and write thank you notes to donors. In lieu of flowers, she requested donations be made in her memory to Literacy DuPage.
