NOVEMBER 2017 E-NEWSLETTER
A Message From Our President

Happy November! As we approach Thanksgiving and the rest of the holiday season, I have so much to be thankful for, including the opportunity to serve as President of an organization like Autism Society San Diego. Thank you all for allowing me to represent you and be a part of this journey with you. I know my own family relies on many of the programs we offer, so I am thankful for the opportunity to help make them available to our community!

November is shaping up to be a busy month - on Saturday, we will be at California State University San Marcos for the 2nd Annual Walk 'N' Rock for Autism 5K and Family Festival! I hope you will come out to this not-to-be-missed event. You can choose from a 5K or a 1K, or even select our virtual racer option. Plus we will have a large resource fair with providers from all over the county, music and entertainment including bouncy houses, face painting and more, plus a large silent auction filled with all kinds of goodies! Even if you are not participating as a racer, we invite you to come join us for a rockin' good time.

If you are planning on sending holiday cards this year, why not order from Picaboo and have a portion of your purchase support Autism Society San Diego? All orders are also 50% off, so you can save money AND make a difference at the same time!

Finally, a big thank you to the San Diego Parrot Head Club for hosting a Happy Hour and Dinner Fundraiser benefitting our organization on Friday, November 17th, at Fast Times in San Diego. See below for more information about how to join us for a margarita and a good time!

Thanks so much,
Amy  Munera

Raising a glass to San Diego at Beers and Cheers!

We had a truly lovely evening at this year's Beers and Cheers for Autism event! Attendees enjoyed personal pizza, pints of craft beer, an incredible silent auction, and more churros than one could eat (though many rose to the challenge!). Thank you so much to all who joined us and to our amazing vendors for a wonderful night.

November Topic:

Housing

United Way Building
4699 Murphy Canyon Road, San Diego, CA
 ***

This month will focus on the critical need for quality, fair housing. We will have 3 dynamic speakers who are working to address this need for our community.
About 71.5% of people with developmental disabilities are currently receiving residential care from family caregivers. As these caregivers age (at present, 25% of caregivers are over age 60), the question of "what is going to happen to this child when I die?" is inevitable. While there are various types of supportive living communities in California addressing this issue, there is just not enough to meet the growing demand.
