Dollar-for-Dollar Match this Colorado Gives Day for Opportunity Grants!
On Tuesday, December 5 Coloradans will come together to support local non-profit organizations for Colorado Gives Day. This year, Westerra Credit Union has generously stepped up to match donations made to the Foundation for Opportunity Grants, dollar for dollar, up to $10,000. 100% of donations will go directly back to schools through the  Foundation's Opportunity Grants program.

Grants are awarded through a competitive process and priority is given to projects that fuel experiential learning and to schools and classrooms that most need the Foundation's support. In the past, Opportunity Grants have funded projects like:
* Robotics and coding curriculum and equipment for elementary school students
* The purchase of LCD projectors and replacement of outdated technology
* The construction of an on-site student designed greenhouse

"It is very difficult for schools to find sources of funding for special projects that are so hands-on and beneficial to students," commented Marti, lead teacher for the greenhouse project. "Getting the grant money inspires the teacher and ignites passion that can be transferred back to the students."

Your gift, which will be doubled, could make an inspiring field trip possible that was previously out of reach. It could stimulate a student to discover a new passion through an after-school club, or it could ensure essential science and technology equipment is available to students who need it.

Join the movement this Colorado Gives Day. Click here to DONATE, you can schedule your gift for Tuesday, December 5 today.

***Note: Gifts made on Colorado Gives Day to a chapter of the Foundation are not eligible for the match. 100% of matched funds go directly to the Foundation for Opportunity Grants.

More Than 5,000 Students Attend Career Connect 8th Grade Expo

On Wednesday, November 8 the Foundation for Douglas County School held the annual Career Connect 8th Grade Expo at the Douglas County Event Center. More than 75 employers representing dozens of industries welcomed students to interactive booths highlighting high-growth careers. Each student spent almost an hour in the hall, exploring careers, learning about post-secondary education options, and talking with mentors. The booths were staffed by career professionals and featured games, activities, and interactive technology including virtual reality goggles, medical simulations, lab experiments, and digital simulations.

The first round of students crowded around the Douglas County Sheriff booth, climbing into the outfitted SUV and checking out the view from the back of the police vehicle. The students had a lot of questions for the officers, wondering about a typical day on the job and the educational requirements to move up the ranks.

"It helped me decide what I want to do when I get older," said Camyrn of Rocky Heights Middle School. "I got to meet three ER nurses from Sky Ridge Medical Center, I want to do what they do. I want to be an ER Trauma Nurse when I grow up."

"The opportunity to see what is waiting for them on the other side of the classroom is invaluable for students," said Meaghan Sullivan, Executive Director of the Foundation. "Combined with the career exploration that is happening in the classrooms prior to the event, students will have a much better sense of the options they have for their future and what they can do now to set themselves up for success."

None of this would be possible without the dedication and support of the Expo's sponsors, exhibitors, volunteers and partnering teachers.  Thank you to this year's supporters!
