The season for hunting opens and closes; winter reminds us to drink hot chocolate and warm cider; summer invites a trip to the beach with lots of iced tea (sweet tea if you are from the South!).  Thanksgiving and Christmas have their "seasons" as well.  However, Christians can observe open season on generosity throughout the year.

Hillsboro Baptist Church has the reputation of a giving church.  We support missions, provide scholarships, mail boxes to encourage HBC Ambassadors (military personnel and college students) away from home, provide Christmas boxes for children - to name a few.  You bless your pastor!  Leta and I thank you for the kind words, cards, offering, and tributes throughout the service on Pastor Appreciation Sunday.  You bless us by your kindness.

Gifts of warm smiles, you-first attitudes, friendship, and peace are year-round expressions of Jesus' gift of the Holy Spirit which never goes out of season.

The Holiday Season's arrival is right around the corner.  It tends to bring a mixture of joy and panic as preparations get underway.  If we are not careful, we can lose focus very quickly and forget to be thankful on Thanksgiving or be joyless while singing "Joy to the World."  The four Sundays leading up to Christmas are a time to reflect and to hit the pause button as it were.  As a church family, we can take a deep, long collective breath as we wait on the Lord.  After all, the meaning of Christmas it not primarily presents but presence.  Pastor Jim has been reminding us of this over the past few weeks.  It is all about God's presence, his manifest presence . . . God with us, living in us and through us.  (If you have missed any Sunday messages, you can hear them on the website

We will start off our church-wide Christmas preparations on Sunday night, November 26 at 5 pm with "Hanging of the Green."  There will be holiday cookies and other refreshments for all those participating.  We will transform the church and grounds with "green" holiday decorations.  All ages are welcome!  If you've never participated, it's really a lot of fun!  And "many hands make light work" and get us to the cookies faster!  December 3 is the first Sunday of Advent, and we will have the pleasure of hearing musical selections performed by the Hillsboro Preschool students.  The Worship Team is once again planning a beautiful Christmas Eve celebration for the whole family.  I hope you will make plans to attend and bring friends and relatives.  The Christmas Eve Candlelight Service is from 5 to 6 pm.

I also want to mention how wonderful the response was to Operation Christmas Child again this year.  Seeing those empty boxes disappear and reappear again, full of your outpouring of love, is what Christmas is all about.

"Jesus, the very thought of Thee with sweetness fills my breast; but sweeter far thy face to see, and in Thy presence rest."  (12th century hymn)

BIBLE STUDY: (Wednesday from 6:30 to 7:15 pm).  Pastor Jim continues with a survey-talk-through approach to the New Testament.  If you are interested in examining the Scriptures plus a look at the times surrounding Jesus' ministry, public figures and their influence on the early church, a closer look at the geography of the early church and prophecies fulfilled - this study is for you.  Participants receive a binder full of handouts that can be used for personal study as well as teaching materials for your own Bible class.  Members of all faiths (and non-faiths) will benefit from this study.  Makeup sessions for late enrollees are available by appointment with Pastor Jim by calling or emailing your request.  LAST WEDNESDAY FOR THE YEAR WILL BE NOVEMBER 15.  CLASSES WILL RESUME AFTER THE FIRST OF THE YEAR ON JANUARY 3, 2018.

Save the Date - Thursday, November 16, at 6:30 pm for another Women of All Ages gathering in the Hillsboro Fellowship Hall.  The program promises to be both inspirational and practical for heading into the Thanksgiving-Christmas season. Youth (ages 12-18)

Hey everyone!  What an amazing and busy October we had!  The teens took a trip to Lynchburg to checkout Liberty University's "Scaremare."  Needless to say, it was the scariest 45 minutes of our lives, but it was amazing!  We spent the entire trip laughing nonstop!

We also held our very fist College and Career Night.  We had a blast with the young adults!  Anyone that was out of high school and in college, working on their career, or in the military, was invited to come to dinner at our home (Brittany and Sid's).  We had a blast and are counting down the days until our next College and Career Night in December.

November will be just as busy for the Youth Group.  We have been studying how to make a difference in the world through the Gospel of Christ.  Over the next few months, we will be putting Make a Difference into action.

The Bible says, "For we are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do."  Ephesians 2:10.  These "good deeds" are our service to the world.  Whenever you serve others in any way, you are actually serving God and fulfilling one of your purposes.  This month we will be baking cookies to give to the families at the UVA Children's Hospital.  So many at the UVA Children's Hospital are hurting and asking "where is God."  The Youth at Hillsboro will be preparing a "Blessing Bag" with cookies and handwritten cards to let them know that they are loved and that there is a God that cares for them.  We will be spending several days baking cookies in the month of November.

We will also be planning community projects in November and December.  Stay tuned to all the exciting things the Youth will be apart of.

"We aren't called to be like other Christians.  We are called to be like Christ."  Author unknown.  Now is the time to go and make a difference!

As a young church-planter-in-training, I have recently been studying church leadership and function.  My well of experience and practice comes from my home church, and therefore, my thoughts continually return to the fellowship hall and white fold-up tables and cushioned chairs.  I have such fond memories of the multi-hourlong meetings where we talked of Hillsboro's physical and spiritual needs and plans.

My heart is full as I sit in classes, knowing that I have already been very well equipped for the task at hand and my future ministry of seeing the unreached tribes come to know Jesus personally.  I have my many years at Hillsboro to thank for all of this.

Thank y'all for the years of dedication to our body.  Thank you for the hundreds of hours in meetings, composing emails, in prayer and in physical service to our beloved church family.  I have been to few churches where I have found such devotion and sense of ownership and responsibility as I have experienced at Hillsboro.  God's blessing are very evident because God's blessing are all of you!

God chose people to be His ministers of grace and truth.  When people walk into the doors of Hillsboro, they literally walk into the presence of God - that is why we are always complimented with how warm and welcoming we are.  So thank you for using your gifts, for offering time and energy, and for prioritizing your relationship with Jesus.  Hillsboro is blessed and is glorifying God with every action.

May our Lord Jesus bless you all with the spiritual gifts of the body and give you rest as you extend, time and time again, all of yourselves for the benefit of our precious church.

In Jesus,
Jonathan Gilliland

Hillsboro Christian Preschool enjoyed our trip to the Pumpkin Patch on October 13.  The children took a tractor ride to the patch where they chose their own pumpkins.  Fresh apple cider was a delicious part of our snack that we shared together.

Preschool will be closed November 22 - 24 for Thanksgiving break.
