Message From the Executive Director of SBCCOG

At last the leaves are turning and Fall is in the air. We turn our attention to the season of thanks with friends and family.  At the SBCCOG's Environmental Services Center, November is the month that we thank our amazing volunteers and celebrate the work that they do every day for the South Bay.

Also, we make preparations for our Annual Holiday Light Exchange which will be on Thursday, November 30 and Friday, December 1 from 9-5. We would like to encourage you to come to the Center and exchange one of your old strands of energy-guzzling incandescent holiday lighting for a strand of new Energy Star® rated LED holiday lights. Not only do you get longer lasting lights but also we take your old strand off of the grid!

Here are 5 tips from the World Research Institute for a sustainable Thanksgiving:  http://www.wri.org/blog/2016/11/5-ways-have-sustainable-thanksgiving.

We hope that you enjoy the holiday.

Southern California Edison Introduces Clean Energy Proposal to Meet State's Climate, Air Quality Goals

Southern California Edison has proposed an integrated strategic framework for the state of California to meet its ambitious climate and air quality goals. SCE describes its Clean Power and Electrification Pathway in a white paper released late last month.  The approach builds upon existing state programs by identifying cost-effective actions to increase clean energy in the electric system and to leverage that clean electricity in the transportation and building sectors to achieve needed emissions reductions. California environmental goals include reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 40 percent from 1990 levels by 2030 and by 80 percent by 2050, as well as reducing nitrogen oxides (NOx) and other health-harming pollutants in areas of the state with the highest levels of air pollution by 2032.

Water Conservation Tips

Conserving water doesn't have to mean a major lifestyle change. It can be as simple as taking a shorter shower or turning off the water while you brush your teeth. Learn easy ways to conserve water each and every day. Here are a few tips for water use around the yard:
  • Water your yard only in the morning or evening to reduce evaporation.
  • You can save up to 150 gallons of water by using a broom to clean sidewalks and driveways instead of a hose.
  • Make sure your sprinklers are aimed on the grass and plants.

Robert W. Goldsworthy Groundwater Desalter Expansion

WRD is proud to announce that Goldsworthy Groundwater Desalter Expansion Project will be completed later this year. In partnership with the City of Torrance, WRD is expanding its freshwater supply for the City by removing and treating a saline plume located in the West Coast Basin. The Robert W. Goldsworthy Groundwater Desalter is located at the Torrance City Yard and is responsible for extracting and treating approximately 2.5 million gallons of brackish (salty) water per day. Currently, WRD and the City of Torrance are working together to expand and upgrade the facility. Upon completion, the facility will double the desalination capabilities of local brackish groundwater to 5 million gallons per day.
