Thanksgiving Meal Baskets for Families in Homeless Shelters
YWCA

Date/Time: Drop off baskets Tuesday, November 20 between 8am - noon

Location: 2301 S. Jackson Street, Seattle

Fall is in the air and the YWCA is gathering Thanksgiving meal baskets for homeless and low-income families who live in our shelter and housing programs. These programs are a safe haven for families working hard to move forward in their lives and build a better future for their children. You and your family can help out by filling a basket with all the fixings for a traditional Thanksgiving meal. Each basket will make a difference to a family in need. We need almost 1000 baskets! All baskets should have enough food to feed about 6 people, and should include the following:

1 Turkey around 10lbs
Foil roasting pan
5 lb bag of Potatoes
Yams/sweet potatoes
Mini marshmallows
Prepared stuffing (like stove top)
1 lb butter
1 gallon milk
FRESH pie  (NOT frozen)
Sweet Potato, Pumpkin or Apple  please!
Whip cream
Dinner rolls
Green beans
Instant turkey gravy
Flour/ sugar
Pre packed salad mix
Salad dressing
1 bottle sparkling apple cider
Salt & pepper
Cooking Oil

You can always add to this as the families are need of so much, but this should be your basic box. We call it a basket, because in the past lots of people brought the food in laundry baskets. Feel free to do the same, or to use anything that is easy to carry and strong. The families love the wicker baskets, Rubbermaid's, or even big boxes.

Ages: Everyone is welcome to participate

Time Commitment: Varies

Contact: Nichelle Hilton, 206.375.1496, [email protected]. Email Nichelle by Tuesday, November 13 with the number of baskets you are planning on donating so she can plan accordingly.

Write a Letter!
Operation Gratitude

Date/Time: Ongoing

Location: All your cards and letters can be sent together in one large mailing envelope or box to:
Operation Gratitude
21100 Lassen Street
Chatsworth, CA 91311-4278
ATTN: Letter Writing Program
Please include a donation form in your large mailing envelope or box.

Operation Gratitude annually sends 200,000+ Care Packages filled with food, entertainment, hygiene, and handmade items, plus personal letters of appreciation to Veterans, First Responders, New Recruits, Wounded Heroes, their Care Givers, and to individually named U.S. service members deployed overseas and their families waiting at home. Of all the items included in these packages, the most cherished are the personal letters of appreciation! Our goal is to include several letters and colorful drawings in every Care Package and tell our troops "WE CARE!" Writing a letter is a meaningful way for Americans to show support for our Military. It only takes five minutes of your day, but will bring lasting joy to our troops. Letters are accepted year-round. Right now, we have a special need for those specifically written to our New Recruits, Veterans, and First Responders. Holiday cards need to be received two to three months prior to the holidays in order for them to reach our service members on time. Once we receive letters it takes us time to screen, sort and assemble them into our care packages and then we have to factor in the shipping time. If your letters will arrive at a later date it will work well to make them general letters of appreciation so that they may be used year-round. Don't know where to start? Click here for the Write a Letter flyer.

Kids Helping Kids
Wellspring Family Services

Date/Time: Children are invited to drop off their donations at Wellspring Family Services between 9am - 4pm, Monday - Friday. Wellspring is happy to provide age-appropriate tours of our agency so children can see the impact of their donations.

Location: 1900 Rainier Ave S, Seattle

Wellspring Family Services builds emotionally healthy, self-sufficient families within a safe, caring environment. Kids Helping Kids (KHK) is a youth philanthropy program that invites children to make a difference in the lives of their homeless peers by collecting coins for Wellspring Family Services. The first step is for children to either pick up a KHK jar from the Wellspring office or to create a coin jar on their own. The next step is to get creative and start filling the jar with change! Some children contribute a portion of their allowance money, others host a bake sale or lemonade stand, and some even offer to do extra chores around the house. For a list of age-and campaign-specific fundraising ideas for your children to start filling their jars, click here.
